So, for another year, I completely dropped the ball,Halloween-wise.  I am determined to havemy little roost decorated in some fashion by early/mid-October of 2015, but Ineed your artistic advice on what sorts of props and such to acquire.  As you can see from the photo, there isn’t awhole lot to work with, but I feel there are some possibilities.  I mean, the place is kinda creepy andhaunted/decrepit-looking right from the git-go.

The plant in the foreground left is a sago palm.  I don’t see a whole lot of opportunity withit, beyond placing skulls at the very tops of the plant or something.  The spindly plant branches visible behind thesago palm are a mimosa tree.  Theyactually cross the porch in a couple of places, and would be decent for hangingthings from.  Also behind the sago issome ivy on the wall.  I just cut it backprior to snapping this photo, but will probably let it grow in thick on theporch rails by next Halloween.  Thepalmetto palm to the right might have some possibilities for hanging bats orheads or simply draping spider-webs.  Youcan’t tell from the angle of the shot, but there’s a little laundry room in thesmall area behind the stairs, with doorway that opens off to the right.  I’m thinking a fog machine there could makefor a nice spooky effect, if the fog would sort of drift upwards to the porchabove.

So, in keeping with the year-round Halloweenspirit, please feel free to offer any and all advice you can think of to spruceup my meager little place for next Halloween! Thanks!

well cobwebs (kobb webs?) are always your friend for things like the tree at least.  Or you could do some kind of garland or lights for that and/or the railings.

Yeah, I'm looking around, trying to find big batches of webbing, and considering buying a big bunch of bones and hanging parts/heads/etc from eBay and/or Amazon and dangling them in the web.  I'm thinking a bunch of Spanish Moss would be cool, too.  I'm guessing there's someplace around here locally where I can obtain big, bug-free bushels of the moss.   Maybe give things a swamp-vibe?   Find big snakes and spiders to go with the motif.  The place already looks like what Billy would term a "shotgun shack".

I bought a blacklight bulb at the Home Depot earlier, but I doubt it'll give anywhere like the colorful, theatrical Argento look I'd love to see.   My problem is, I have zero handy-man skills and zero theater production skills, either.  Just clueless on how to even begin simple Porch Decoration 101.

Has anybody here ever played around with window silhouettes for Halloween?   Any tips on that would be welcome.

I do have electrical extensions that I can run from the kitchen and from the little laundry room below the stairs, so that should help with lights and other atmospherics like smoke machine or strobes or whatever.

Get red, yellow, or orange LED lights and set them up that they give the impression of things staring out from underneath the porch steps. This could be especially effective if you want to put the fog machine in the door.

That would be VERY cool looking.  I wonder how/if I could find some sort of cheap black paper or plastic backing to put under the stairs to help  augment the peeping eyes look.

A house a few blocks over in our neighborhood utilized simple black sheets of some sort of plastic (probably for construction originally) that they hung from their huge oak tree so that they came just over the tops of cars that passed their house.  The noise the sheets made as they flapped and clapped together in the breeze had a sort of creepy sound to them, too.

Try making some of these:
http://www.thriftycraftygirl.com/2011/10/31-days-of-halloween-eyes-in-bushes.html

But instead of Christmas lights, you can use glow sticks.

Also I found some great led lights at The Dollar Tree, the ones I used in my duct-tape o-lanterns.

Oh, man, Mayz!  I love things done so effectively on the cheap like both her eyes-in-the-bushes idea and your truly wicked looking duct-tape-o-lanterns.    If I can't score the right LED lights, those glowsticks are easy to come by.

I can definitely see that working in the sago palm bushes, as well as under the stairs.

Along with some apple shrunken heads, I wanna try making some traditional turnip Jack O'lanterns for next Halloween.

They're both cheaper and creepier than pumpkins.

Purchased some nifty battery-powered LED lights for night rides on the bicycle, and definitely think that they are the way to go for Halloween decorating.  They put out some amazing light for such tiny things.

Also, this site has some pretty spectacular stuff available (cut n' paste):

Two feasibility questions:

Would it be at all practical/affordable to purchase some Styrofoam headshapes and cheap full head-coverage Halloween masks for a "trophies dangling from the palm tree" tableau?

Would it be too tacky to impale bloody stuffed animals on bamboo skewers at the base of the steps?

Turnips are tough as heck though, aren't they?  I'd wind up slicing my thumb off.

In my experience, styrofoam heads are relatively cheap (you shouldn't even pay ten bucks for one) and you can usually find them in beauty supply stores.  If you recall I used one for I want to say Halloween 2010 when I was a two headed zombie.

The female heads are fairly cheap, the male ones are more expensive.  I think the faceless ones are even cheaper.   For some reason the male heads are realistic, but the female ones are more like anime faces.   I used wig heads for Tony and Bernie:

If you don't have any ethical qualms about shopping at Hobby Lobby, they have a downloadable coupon for 40% off, which makes these heads really cheap.

Kobb, Do you have a Dollar Tree in your neighborhood? They have surprisingly cool decorations, at only a buck a piece. I've been picking stuff up there each paycheck, and I've got pretty stash built up.

YES!  I haven't had the time to venture out like I'd like to yet, but I did wander into one the other day and saw some of that creepy fabric for a buck a pop.  Online they want $7!  There was also a cool whitish rubber ghoul mask that I wish I'd have bought (for an idea I have in mind).

I missed a 20%-off total order online deal for Spirit Halloween last weekend because I was just too damned beat after work.  But they've been running bargain after bargain, so I'm pretty sure I'll get another crack at it soon.  I want one of their giant spider skeletons!

It's interesting to me that French is the second language on the packages.  Is Halloween growing in popularity over there or something?
