3rd XI vs Hale Barns

A young Winnington 3rd's hosted Hale Barns and after a rain delay at the start of the match stand-in skipper Rob Woolley, true to track record, lost the toss and Hale Barns elected to field. New opening partnership Matty Jackson and James Woolley got us off to a solid start putting on 43 for the first wicket in 15 overs. The third ball of the 16th over saw Jackson bowled by Attree for a well made 20. With Woolley on 22 Kendo Richardson strode to the wicket feeling good but it was Woolley who took the attack to the bowlers adding 20 to his tally in the next 4 overs in a partnership of 26. James was then caught at mid wicket off Attree and a quick flurry of wickets fell as Richardson and Reissing both went quickly, to the accurate bowling of Steve Goron, reducing us to 72 for 4. This brought Matty George and Woolley Snr together and the pair set about the Barns bowling as they meant to go on. Woolley, facing Wilson, launched his 2nd ball high over mid- wicket in typical style for 4 first bounce just inches from the rope. George drove Hesketh beautifully down the ground and Woolley cut him through the covers a couple of times as Goron pegged away at the Bowling Green end with a tight line  Woolley then fell bowled by Goron for a quick fire 25 in a partnership of 42 in just 7 overs. With the score just 114 for 5 off  31 overs the race for bonus points was on, with the cut off being 37 overs George pushed on as wickets fell around him, as Tom Woolley and Rob Powell both went quickly, to take the total to 140 off the last ball of the 37th and 8 valuable batting points. Wickets continued to tumble but George steered us to 155 for 9 off our allotted overs. George made an invaluable 48 only falling bowled to Wilson off the last ball of the innings.

After the tea interval all the hard work quickly came apart as both Norman and Jackson looked very out of sorts with the ball as Hesketh and Raza set about the Winnington attack. At the works end Tom Speak bowled very well with little luck, the skipper missing a sharp catch low to his right and other fielding blunders not supporting Tom's good spell. Limited to only 5 overs because of his age speak was replaced by Richardson with the Skipper praying for some carribean chin music or at least a torrential downpour. This change brought about the first and only wicket to fall as Raza skied a return catch to Kendo trying to pull a high full toss. Woolley rang the changes as Patterson, George and the Woolley brothers all tried their luck. George backed up his good batting with a solid bowling performance. All this was to no avail as Hesketh steered Hale to their target of 156 in just 25.3 overs with an excellent 102 just as the thunder and lightening arrived.
