By Daily News Staff The Naples Police Department is investigating a string of incidents involving the theft of air conditioning refrigerant from several air conditioners. Investigators said they have learned the thefts are being committed by youths for the purpose of inhaling the gases, which is illegal. The refrigerant gas, Freon, is easily obtained from residential and commercial air conditioning units for purpose of "huffing," police said. Locking caps can be installed to prevent the thefts. The cost of replacing or recharging the Freon is typically about $100, authorities said. The inhalation of Freon creates a "high" feeling, as well as a dizzying effect, distorted vision, rapid heartbeat and occasional hallucinations, police said. The "high" lasts only for a few minutes. Such inhalations can cause the lungs to collapse, oxygen deprivation, irregular heartbeat and death, according to Naples police. Here are some warning signs that a person may be using inhalants: - Problems in school - failing grades, absenteeism, apathy
- Paint or stains on body or clothing
- Spots or sores around the mouth
- Red or runny eyes or nose
- Chemical breath odor
- Drunk, dazed or dizzy appearance
- Nausea, loss of appetite
- Anxiety, excitability, irritability
