Inhalants are the most popular drug among 12 year old kids and research from the US department of Health and Human Services shows kids often think that common household products are harmless. Now as people rely more on their air conditioners, there's a new chemical people in the Ozarks need to watch.
Most people have heard of teenagers inhaling the fumes from gas cans, finger nail polish or even cooking spray to get a high and now they've found yet another chemical - freon. It's found right outside the door at most places in the air conditioning unit.
Bolivar Police say they've received two reports in the last couple weeks of teens unhooking the tube to the air conditioner in order to huff the freon fumes. It forced one Bolivar pizza business to buy an entire new air conditioner. Bolivar Police Chief Michael Seibert says "they used all the freon out of it and of course the employees didn't realize it was out and ran it and burned up the motor." Police also urge businesses to be aware, Siebert says "business people need to be aware if they've got people hanging around the alley they need to run them off. If not, call us and we'll run them off." Chief Seibert says the people reported doing this could be as young as 13 up to 18 years old. Some business owners believe the kids are even younger than that.
If the suspects are caught, Seibert says they'll be charged with property damage or theft of freon. He's asking business owners to keep a close eye on their air conditioning units and call police if you see anyone hanging out around them.
