We're a few weeks into the new fall season, and the winners and losers have emerged.

F

The most obvious loser so far is the CW's "The Beautiful Life: TBL," which was canceled after only two episodes.

But the absolute biggest loser was also the biggest gamble of the season: NBC's "The Jay Leno Show." Leno is just barely getting viewers.

After debuting to 17 million viewers about a month ago, the show has sunk to averaging less than 5 million a show. Leno's show was the first prime time variety talk show in TV history, and it's clear why no network attempted one before: Audiences would rather watch scripted drama than hear a monologue of tired jokes or stare at vapid celebrities.

This is bad news for NBC, because the network committed to two years of "The Jay Leno Show." So far, none of its new shows have even registered, much less become hits.

Big winners so far include "NCIS: LA," "FlashForward" and "Glee." The latter two shows I've added to my regular viewing schedule.

"FlashForward" started off strong and hasn't stumbled yet. The plot — about the entire world blacking out and seeing the future — has moved along at a steady pace, with just enough twists per episode to maintain interest and further the overall storyline.

One thing I really like is that every episode has a slight creepy feeling running throughout, which is hard to maintain with episodic TV.

"FlashForward" could be a good replacement for "Lost," but it's too soon to draw any real comparisons.

"Glee" was one of my most anticipated shows of the season after the great pilot aired in May. The series itself is good ... but, so far, not great.

The musical numbers on the show are really creative and entertaining. "Glee" also never fails to make me laugh or pull out some instantly quotable line of dialogue.

But when the show isn't singing its heart out or throwing out a one-liner about writing "Desperate Housewives" fan fiction, it stumbles. Bad.

At the top of my list of problems with "Glee" is how it seems each episode was written by a different creative team. This has made the show wildly inconsistent week to week (and sometimes scene to scene). It also doesn't help the major plot threads running throughout the show often drag.

Still, "Glee" is a good show, so let's hope it solves its consistency issues.
