I never had a weight problem until I turned 48 and went on life-time medication. Both meds had side effects of weight gain, and  I was careless, but it is not medications that make you gain weight. Overeating, often accompanied with underlying issues, make you gain weight. Yes, the metabolism slows down as we age, and for women especially as they go through menopause, but we are to be alert enough to notice that and react after a few unhappy and persistent pounds start to pile on.

Perhaps none of the above scenario relates to you. You may have held onto this weight gain cycle since an early life. Or you might be a yo-yo dieter that has exhausted your body. Perhaps you have never seriously attempted weight loss before because you feel helpless to start. Perhaps food is a comfort you are not willing to give up and you will find that you will not be deprived of it.

I claimed that I watched helplessly as the weight piled on. I knew nothing about dieting or where to start. It was after seeing a church directory picture of myself that shocked me into reality. Enough was enough.   God placed right in my path an online (pay) diet site that led me on the path of calorie restriction and exercise. I am still grateful to this day for all the information gained and the total loss of 85 pounds in one years time. The glory belongs to God though, because during this time I wrote a 31 day diet Bible study, The Weight Of Proverbs, for myself and then to share with others. It kept me ever so motivated and it caused me to look at the naked truth that I was not including God at meal mealtimes. I thought our relationship was just fine, but I discovered if He is kept out of one blaring area of your life, He wants it all, and if obesity is how He draws your attention, so be it.

So now to the day I reached goal, and I ran The Weight Of Proverbs 4 times for others during that time, who for the majority, received it with great success and new understanding. Problem with goal weight, however, I was down to 1200 calories a day and exercising for 3 or more hours daily, 6 days a week.  When you think of that, you will know why after a year I exhausted myself and slowly lost my desire to maintain. I had left the online diet board to continue on with my diet ministry on my own, and quite truthfully I was looking for some Christian support on my own from someone who might find keeping weight off as impossible as I now was discovering.

Fast forward; I stayed with my ministry, but the next few years all the weight loss came back on me. Simply put, I didn't try. I knew it would be even more difficult this go round and my head was already filled with so much knowledge and chat, God had a difficult time catching my attention again. He did that for me with a very personal word from the Word, and walla, it all came together. He gave me a "plan," along with my The Weight Of Proverbs to update, and I found that I could do without feeling as if I were dieting. I was gently being corrected and guided   The plan I named Inspiration Eating because it is simple and pure, and yes, inspirational that no one can be credited but God alone who had allowed me to go through this weight gain again to conceive it, and this time I credited no method but Him alone. I have lost 55 pounds this year and I have 25 more to go. I did not fall into the trap of counting calories, measuring portions, or exercise, although those are all worthy pursuits. What I did do each day will be summarized for you.

  • I
  • said the Lord's prayer at each meal.
  • I
  • ate when hungry (no more clock watching or mindless eating), and I stopped when satisfied (not the same as FULL)!
  • I
  • did not eat snacks in between meals. If I wanted a snack food, even if it were a celery stick or crackers), I ate it at my meal BEFORE  I became satisfied
  • I
  • had NO second helpings. They were my primary reason for weight gain
  • I
  • ate MODERATE portions. No more heaping on the plate of favorite foods or restaurant size servings.
  • I
  • brushed my teeth after a meal to insure I would not face temptation to nibble.
  • D
  • rank water throughout the day to stay full and hydrated.
  • I
  • re-read The Weight Of Proverbs for motivation, conviction and prayer.

This is a plan anybody who truly wants to lose weight can follow. There is no sacrifice other than the start up few weeks where your mind wants you to return to bondage of your appetite. If you begin to faithfully eat only until satisfied and not full, and only to eat when you have genuine hunger, not thirst, or a taste, or a ritual, you will lose weight without realizing that you are dieting. This is a lifestyle change that can be a permanent way of living.   On our message board I will answer concerns about struggling and regarding what hunger verses appetite and satisfied verses full mean.

I will be participating on this site (as well as my other ministry sites) to not only help others lose weight this way, but to take me to the goal line of my journey. I hope that you will let God take control for you and be amazed that when we put Him at the helm, He is an all sufficient Captain.

from my original site http://www,gracetoday.com/  (Low Cal Scriptures)

Day 14: Why You Shouldn't Clean Your Plate Proverbs 23:1 When you sit to dine with a ruler, note well what is before you, 2 and put a knife to your throat if you are given to gluttony.

I read this not too long ago, and the truth of it amazed me. "When a lion kills a gazelle, it doesn't eat the whole animal. Why not? The lion eats until it is SATISFIED, not FULL. If it ate to FULLNESS, it would get fat and not be able to catch its next meal. No matter how much food is available, a wild animal doesn't overeat. A wild animal does not CONTROL its eating. It does what is pleasurable - eating when hungry, stopping when comfortable.

We know that God has made us in His image and that we are to be above animals. If they obey nature's laws, why can't we? A domesticated animal will eat until they become obese, but that is because we are supplying the food for them. If you had to go back to the untamed days when you hunted your own food, would you overeat?

No, because it would be to much work, number one, and you would not stay lean enough to capture your prey. Make it tough on yourself next time you eat. If you would have to capture your meal, would you want to eat it all at one sitting, and then have to prepare yourself for the next meal so quickly again to feed your appetite? Eat as if you worked a little harder at capturing this meal and eat only what would make you feel nourished, not sluggish. And by the way, I need to become the hunter again, and let nature dictate to me my appetite, rather than vice versa. How about you?

Prayer: Father, You have blessed us with common sense. We can see through nature alone that You want the body to stay in a safe and normal range. If nature teaches us this, why do I so easily forget what my eyes see. Help me daily to see the need to exercise self-control. Let me be thankful for my daily bread and choose to not take what is an unhealthy portion. Make me aware that I choose whether to be tamed or untamed, and today I choose to tame my appetite, in Jesus' name. Amen

Tip For The Day: Remember choices are as simple as remembering to not reach for that second helping or to take your vitamin today. Even small choices add up to big benefits. My Affirmative Statement Today:__________________________________________

    Low-Cal Scriptures http://www.gracetoday.com

Day 20: Learning To Be Full

Joel 2:26 You will have plenty to eat, until you are full, and you will praise the name of the LORD your God, who has worked wonders for you.

Needing to feel full or satisfied is what I needed. I found out that by eating slower, as recommended, it would complete the cycle of my brain telling my stomach it was full. As you know, it takes a full twenty minutes or so to happen. Sipping water in between mouthfuls helps also. It not only slows you down from just spooning it in, but it also helps the stomach to fill naturally as it should.

But how many of us eat as if we hadn't eaten in a week, or drink water with a meal to help fill our stomachs? These are necessary steps in having the Lord work wonders for you. Old habits can be changed. This area must be a lifestyle change for you and not merely a diet. A diet loses the weight, but a lifestyle change keeps you from the cycle of regaining. I know you've heard this all before, so had I, but it is truly something you must work on overcoming. God has promised that you will have plenty to eat.

Why do we then eat as if we were eating for two or three people? Looking at His Word, and knowing He has written it specifically with us in mind reminds us that He is not doing something wrong, but it is us. Most people on a diet claim that they are hungry all the time. It simply isn't true. What should be said is, "I'm used to eating all the time". We must now develop our habits and patterns to relearn our minds.

Many times you may actually be thirsty, not hungry, but it is easier to grab a Ho Ho which doesn't quench your thirst and still be unsatisfied. Who wants to take the time to sip a glass of water? Who doesn't want a quick fix instead of taking the right cure? In our Scripture we see that when we have plenty to eat (according to the Lord's standard), and we eat until we are full (according to God's standard), then we will praise the name of the Lord our God.

Are you complaining about your caloric restriction, or are you praising the name of the Lord? It all starts with a simple step. When you have eaten your appropriate allotment, try this: Praise and thank the Lord for your share of food and thank Him that you are full and satisfied. We say grace before meals; why not say praise after meals. When we speak forth His precious promises, in faith believing, we receive them. Begin today by saying grace, eating and then saying praise. Just like you must give your dieting more than one day to work, so must you develop this new spiritual habit for more than one try. Try it, what do you have to lose but weight?

Prayer: Father God, I have done eating my way my entire life and now I am paying the consequences for it. I would like to start today eating Your way, and by faith today I am claiming that You will do a wonder for me when I begin to praise Your name for the new thing You are doing in my life. Thank You for Your Word which speaks to my every need. Amen

Tip For The Day: Ask yourself if you truly believe that you can reach your weight loss goal. If you feel yourself waivering, stand in front of a mirror and tell yourself all the reasons you can do it.
