Two Things I Ask God

NIV: Proverb 30:7-8 Two things I ask of you, O LORD; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread.

MATTHEW HENRY'S COMMENTS: Agur wisely prayed for a middle state, that he might be kept at a distance from temptations; he asked daily bread suited to his station, his family, and his real good. There is a remarkable similarity between this prayer and several clauses of the Lord's prayer. When we consider how those who have abundance are prone to abuse the gift. Food convenient; what is so for one, may not be so for another; but we may be sure that our heavenly Father will supply all our need, and not suffer us to want anything good for us; and why should we wish for more?

MY OBSERVATIONS: "Give me only my daily bread," should become our daily prayer. The Israelites, when gathering their daily manna, gathered as much as was necessary, and if they tried to hold it over to the next day found that it was full of maggots and began to smell. God was portioning their daily bread for them. Every instance which we say The Lord's Prayer, we are asking God to portion our daily bread (food allotment) for us. Let us begin to say this prayer and really mean it. The excess poundage will melt away if we are sincere about not in taking more than is necessary to sustain the life.

Heavenly Father, we desire to become more discerning in our choices. We pray that You will remove us far from lust and greed, and watch over us as we partake of our daily bread. Thank You Lord, for our just portion. Help us to truly discern when we have more than what is necessary to sustain us. In Christ's precious name. Amen

NIV: Proverb: 30:20 "This is the way of an adulteress: She eats and wipes her mouth and says, `I've done nothing wrong.'

My Observations: Pretty offensive to be called an adulteress, isn't it? Yet, our eating habits made us one with our lover, food. I can no longer eat and wipe my mouth and say, I've done nothing wrong, if I have overeaten or eaten something out of context for a diet. I am determined to break this adulteress cycle, once and for all. I am returning to my first love, the Lord Jesus, where I know He waits with open arms and forgiveness.

Lord, thank You for such descriptive and graphic verses that help me to imagine what I appeared to be. Thank You for the power and strength to rid myself of this bondage, and thank You for the comfort of Your open arms. Amen

I know what you mean about food being your lover.  I had an interesting experience the other night.  We had gone to a gospel meeting with friends and there 2 small children.  Afterward we stopped at an ice cream place and I really wasn't interested in ice cream but I was kind of hungry.  The adults just got single dips of the flavor of the day which didn't tempt me in the least but the 2 little kids had sundaes.  The girl, age 7, had raspberry but the boy, age 9, had a delicious looking strawberry shortcake.  These kids are really small and I couldn't believe their parents let them order that much unless the idea was that the parents would fiinish it, which they did.  The shortcake would have even been too much for me.  Well, I desperately wanted to taste is but was too shy to ask and I kept waiting for someone to offer.  It never happened.  I went home and ate a few things and was so disgusted with myself for it.  I took it as a learning experience.  If it happened again I would just excuse myself and ask if they could make a smaller size for me.  We had eaten earlier but I was really hungry and only had a side salad and cup of soup which didn't last me long. My Dh paid for the supper and the friends payed for the ice cream so maybe that's why I was so reluctant to speak up.  Plus the Dad mentioned that he supposed I wished I had ordered the shortcake so he new I wanted some.  And then I had to watch the Dad finish it!!!  This must sound really hilarious but I was so down about it.

Carol, I find myself reluctant to order if someone is footing the bill (I just ask for water sometime in that case) and I find myself too awkward to ask for a taste (even though that would satisfy any curiousity and desire. What a lesson for you and perhaps two area's to be overcome. We really have not gone out together with others in almost two years so that situation is resolved for me.

However, when I go on vacation each year to vist my daughter and family, we do order appetizers or other items and share. A taste is all I want to satisfy enjoying new things I have never tried before.
