I've asked somebody this before, but can't find my post. Do I REALLY need the Microsoft Office program? Is it for everybody? I keep getting zillions of updates. My nephew says my pc is not set up for it, and I don't need it . Who actually needs it?

Donna, you need to carefully check what office programs are installed on your computer, whether you use them or not.  The Microsoft Windows Update software scans your computer and only offers updates to existing programs on your computer.

If Windows Update offers an update to whatever Office software is found on your computer it will not hurt anything to allow it to install those updates.  If you want to ignore those updates it's OK too..

And to prevent those Office updates from being offered again, just go to the Windows Update web site (in Internet Explorer click Tools (or Safety for IE8) and select Windows Update.  Select the "Custom" scan and when the process completes it will show you a list of available updates.  Select the ones for Office and use the option to not show or offer you those in the future.

There is no "custom" scan.

You must be running Vista...a totally different interface...but after you check for updates with Vista you should click the "review updates" and look for the option to hide those office updates in the future.

Do you really need Microsoft Office. As this is not a free program and does no come preinstalled how did you get it? The program costs at the very least $90. But your question is do you need it? Well if you want to use a Word Processor to write a letter, want to edit, view, or create a Power Point presentation, although you can get a Power Point Viewer for free, want to create a spreadsheet, then yes you need the program. It includes Excel, Word, Power Point, & One Note. My advice is to keep this great program that you may one day need. In fact every time you open a Power Point presentation you use Office.

Dell ships a lot of their computers with Microsoft Office's Word installed, free.  I assume other companies can do that too, but I know both of my Dell computers came with Word installed, not the full Office Suite, but portions of it.

That's usually why Windows Update will detect some security patches are needed and will identify them as "Office Updates"..

Clay, When I installed IE8, then all these Office updates started coming in, such as Office Suite Pkg. 2, word, Exel, etc. According to what you said, I don't need Office. Should I uninstall it?

Donna, you may not need any of the Office utilities installed on your computer, but remember, they are a very valuable resource to some folks...like me, I use Word all the time, as does my wife.

And Powerpoint is indispensable if you ever look at slide-shows...I get a lot of them in my email from friends...any file ending in .pps needs this program...

So, not knowing what parts of Office you have installed on your computer, my recommendation is to leave it alone.  Even if you never use it there may come a time when you, or someone visiting, needs it.

Again, it will not harm anything to install the Office updates, but ignore them if you want to..

Donna, just to clarify what office programs may be installed on your computer...remember "Office" is not a program, but is a collection of different Microsoft programs usually bundled in a package called "Office".  I have Office 2000 installed on my computers and the programs it installs are:

Word
Excel
PowerPoint
Access
Access photo viewer
Office Tools

Now you may have only 1 or 2 of those programs installed on your computer but the Windows Update site will still identify any patches for those programs as "Office Updates"..

Later versions of the Office suite may include other programs, like Windows Movie Maker, Money and others...my 2000 version works fine on all my computers.

I agree leave it alone. Tell us exactly what Microsoft Office programs you have installed. Start >> All Programs.

You name it, it's there! I'm gonna ignore them. But I didn't install them. They came with IE8. Go figure. Don't want them.

Microsoft Office does not come with IE8 and is not a part of IE8. IE8 is a browser. Look see what exactly you have.

I have Vista, Pk. 2. IE8, and Microsoft Office and Student 2007 in my programs w/ many many updates such as Office Suite pk. 2, Word, Excel, etc.  Don't know how they got installed cause I know nothing about them. Guess I'll just leave them alone.

Donna, you're lucky to have the student edition of Office installed on your computer, they are excellent programs to have...someday you may decide to learn to use some of them...

Did you buy your computer new?  If so, as I mentioned earlier, some companies bundle that software on certain computers as a selling feature...even if you didn't specify that in your order.

If you bought it used then someone did you a favor by leaving that software installed.

If you ever decide to sell that computer, having the Office suite installed will be a plus to any potential buyer.
