Afternoon, all. When I lived over here at Carrie's a year ago and had Comcast, I paid to have my own private telephone line w/cable internet also on it. My new place was remodeled next door to her before I moved in it and it does not have a telephone jack in it at all for the phone company (not att house phone) to hook my home phone to and they do not do inside work like installing jacks and line to hook a phone up to. Can I use the one I bought from Comcast for my house phone to be hooked up to even though I will not be using Cable Internet? Or do I have to buy another wire and jack that hasnt been used for cable? I would appreciate your help, blessings  kitty

A phone jack is a phone jack. I am assuming you have a phone/cable jack that looks like this.
You can install this and just not connect anything to the cable jack. You will have to get the phone line outside the house so that the phone company can connect to it. I suggest you use Cat5 cable and do not use cheap phone cable. Just buy enough to get to the outside. Best way is to go under the floor and then outside whatever way is easiest. As to getting the wire up into the wall, that is not that hard is someone knows how to do it. If you have carpet, drill a tiny hole in the floor next the wall where you want to mount the jack. If you have hardwood flooring remove the baseboard where you want to mount the jack and drill close to the wall. When you put the baseboard back it will cover the hole. Stick a coat hanger down through the hole and then someone must crawl under the house and drill up 2.5" over from that hole toward the wall. Now you have to cut a hole in the wall to mount the phone jack. Push the wire down through the wall and feed it through the hole you drilled. Purchase a pop-in single gang outlet box, that looks like this.
Push the other end of the Cat 5 into the outlet box and then you simply push it in the hole you cut and tighten the phillips screws on each corner. This will lock it in the wall. As the phone jack only needs 2 wires to work, connect the red and green wires to the jack. Install the jack in the wall. Outside put white tape around the red and green wires and label it "use these". If that is too much trouble you can simply use a surface mount jack mounted close to the floor. Much easier to install. Looks like this.

Thanks for answering, Clay.
The jack Comcast put in for my private house phone and cable internet over here at Carrie's looks like the bottom picture except it has 2 places to plug in, one for the phone and one for the computer/internet. The jack has to be inside the house with the wires hanging down outside for the phone Co to hook up too. I have a hole in the floor over at my house to hang the wires down through, just didnt know if Comcast used a special jack/wires or not for the cable internet to come through.
All I want right now is a home phone and have checked the prices for the jack and wireing at Radio Shack and at Walmart, nearly $20.00 which I dont need to spend if the double jack/wiring from the one I bought from Comcast will work or if it has some special wire set up in the wiring for cable and not useable for just a house phone??
Blessings,  kitty

You can use the one you have as one of those jacks will be a phone jack. Just make sure you connect the phone line to the smaller jack which is the phone jack.
BTW, never, ever buy, electronic parts like this at WalMart or Radio Shack. For some reason WalMart has very high prices on these type items. Radio Shack is no better. You can buy a simple surface mount phone jack for around $2 at almost any electrical store.

Thank you again, Clay. We installed a phone jack over at my house with the wires hanging down through the hole in the floor for the phone company to hook to. Boy, those each of those wires (6 of them) arent any bigger than a hair each! Its a wonder to me they can carry any kind of current!

Yes the lines are very tiny. The reason they are able to carry the current necessary to ring your phone is twofold. First off the system has a very low resistance of less than 300 ohms sometimes as low as 200 ohms. Secondly it is DC current and not AC. Phone exchanges operate at 48 volts DC. It takes about 28 volts to ring the phone and around 20 volts for you to just talk on the phone. The current draw is around 20-50 mA, which is very small. So those tiny wires can handle that current. It is also very safe so no one can get shocked.

Thanks, Clay, they are going to turn my own home phone on Aug 2nd or 3rd, sure will make me feel better having a phone. I have a cell phone but its about useless, for whatever the reason it gets a poor signal if a signal at all. I hope the bug has about left you and that you feel much better.
Blessings and have a wonderful weekend.

Today has been wonderful. I even went to WalMart and bought some bananas, and fruit. Trying to eat light and eat things I can digest easily. I fell 100% better today and am looking forward to tomorrow with my grandchildren.

I am so glad you feel better, Clay, yes, eating light on a stomach that has been out of kilter is the best way to go and if you are having the heat we are its still the best way to go. Heavy foods dont seem to set lightly on anyones stomach when its broiling hot like now. I just read where the Temp is supposed to only be 89 degrees here in Lake City, what a laugh!!! In fact the weather usually says it sunny, HAHAHA!! Thats when its storming like mad!!! Keep on feeling good!!
Blessings to you, Clay and family,
kitty
