Contours Walking Holidays offers a coast to coast walking tour across northern England. An American couple recently spent 11 days walking on the old Roman roads from St. Bees Head on the Irish sea to Robin Hood's Bay on the North Sea Coast. A total of 194 miles were covered & three National Parks visited along the way. After reading this article I have yet another question for our resident Limey's. What the hell is the "Neolithic ax trade?" The article sez this even preceded the Roman era.

A trade in axes from the Neolithic era, from about 10,000 to 2,000 BC. The north of England has plenty of flint deposits, so it was a centre for the production of good hard axeheads.

If they'd gone further north they could have walked what's left of the Roman Hadrian's Wall and beyond that there is a walk actually along the England-Scotland border.

Surely nothing could be more fulfilling for a woman than being an equal of a troglodyte.
