The sculptures and frieze reliefs were stolen from the pediment of the Parthenon in Athens & shipped to the U.K. more than 200 years ago by the Earl of Elgin, a British diplomat and amateur antiquarian. They are displayed in London's & a source of contention with the Greek government which has lobbied furiously for their return. Of course in typical British fashion, the Limey's claim these priceless antiquities are better off with them instead of their rightful Greek owners from which they were plundered.

The problem with giving them back is that it'll set a precedent for countries all over the world to want "their" artefacts back. You'll end up with a museum displaying your own history and nothing else, or at best copies of other nations' treasures and second rate stuff they don't want.

Elgin bought and paid for the marbles. He was buying lots of antiquities and the locals were pissing themselves laughing at the crazy Englishman who was paying good money for rubble.

Ah yes Mark, the good British argument that other countries treasures are better off with you. Jolly good.

In most cases yes, we know how to look after them better.

Correct Mark, they wouldn't exist without us. I remember a cartoon in a paper years ago showing two people looking at the pyramids. They're magnificent aren't they says one and the other replies, yes.... the originals are in the British Museum.

What's the use of conquering the world if you can't take a few trinkets back with you.

It's not so much the Elgin marbles that are in the news these days but artefacts that British troops brought back with them after the China War 1856-60. Many in private hands are being bought up by wealthy Chinese.

I normally defend the British Empire as a force for good; but the two China Wars (1839-42 and 1856-60) are indefensible. And before any Yanks claim the moral high ground the US got involved in the 2nd China War too.
