Swarm of quakes in Reno may

presage bigger one

Chronicle Staff Report

Saturday, April 26, 2008

Scientists are telling residents in Reno to prepare for something bigger after more than 150 tiny earthquakes rippled the ground beneath the city's western suburbs Thursday and Friday.

The quakes occurred on small unnamed faults that appear to be rupturing at unusually shallow depths, and researchers at the University of Nevada's seismological laboratory are calling them aftershocks from two temblors that struck Thursday in the densely populated west Reno subdivisions called Mogul and Somerset. Thursday's quakes registered magnitudes slightly greater than 4.

Even though the aftershocks have been small - almost all with magnitudes of less than 2 - many have been felt as gentle shaking in the area, and the two on Thursday were felt as single sharp jolts as far west as Truckee, 30 miles away.

"Nevada's been really quiet for months until a small series began about three weeks ago, and now there have been dozens in the last few days," John Anderson, director of the seismological lab in Reno, said Friday. "Our earthquake hazards are fairly significant, and although we're certainly not predicting anything major, we want people in the area to take the kind of precautions you folks in the Bay Area know about - keeping earthquake readiness kits handy with food, water and other supplies. It just makes sense."

Aftershocks can be expected for several more days based on the magnitudes of Thursday's earthquakes, said Anderson, who added that the persistence of this particular earthquake sequence slightly increases the probability for a significant earthquake in west Reno.

"However, the occurrence of additional earthquake activity in the area cannot be predicted or forecast," he said.

It's been dominating the Reno TV news.

Funny they say that Nevada's been quiet siesmically.  Given that the big Wells quake destroyed the old and photogenic downtown section.

The Winnemucca newspaper (which I subscribe to) recently reported that Nevada is the 3rd most seismically active state in the U.S.

I noticed over on deathvalley.com this morning Red Hat/Leroy Johnson mentioned a 3.6 out of Ridgecrest, I believe, that he felt in Bishop.  Of course further to the south at Coso Junction is a "hot" zone for earthquakes - it shakes most of the time. Maybe this is Nevada's "Coso Junction"..and the area is just waking up a little bit.

4.2 Tremor Shakes Reno Area Early Monday Morning

Posted: April 28, 2008 09:45 AM PDT

The area around Reno continues to shake as another moderate earthquake has been recorded in the region.

The Seismology Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno, says a magnitude 4.2 tremor shook the city early today and has been followed by at least a dozen aftershocks.

No injuries or damage have been reported.

It's the latest in a two-month swarm of earthquakes that started in February, and scientists say this is unusual because the tremors are getting stronger, instead of weaker.

The strongest shock so far was a magnitude 4.7 quake that shook cans off shelves on Friday.
