Explore Historic California

Tour Information

We are an equal opportunity service provider. We use only designated trails and areas.

  • Advance registration is required on all tours.

  • Street-legal, fully insured,  4x4 vehicles with selectable low range transfer case are  required.
  • Unless otherwise stated, tours are limited to 15 vehicles.

  • The trip fee covers our insurance, organization, leadership and guide services. Guests are responsible for their own lodging, meals , vehicle, equipment and related expenses.

2008 TOUR schedule

Rising fuel prices are significantly impacting the way we do business!

Rather than raise tour prices or add a "fuel surcharge", we have established a tour minimum of six (6) vehicles per tour.

  •
Invite a friend to bring his or her vehicle on the same tour and receive a $50 discount on your fee!

We rely on your continued support to make these tours possible.

We can also arrange custom tours for your group of six (or more) vehicles. Please contact us for information and pricing.

$30 each additional passenger

Seen the films, "Volcano" or "Dante's Peak"? The real forces of Nature are close at hand in Eastern California. Stay two nights in or near Mammoth Lakes and explore northern Owens Valley from Bishop's volcanic tableland to the geologically active Long Valley Caldera. See geological forces at work in Hot Creek. Explore Mono Lake and area mining history. Easy-moderate 4-wheeling. Tour starts in Bishop and ends in Mammoth Lakes.

Sat.-Mon, July 19-21,  2008

THREE-DAY TOUR: MOTEL / CONDO

FEE: $300 per 4WD (1 or 2 people)

$40 each additional passenger

Commerce from Cerro Gordo's mines caused Los Angeles to begin to bloom in the 1870's. Explore southern Owens Valley near Lone Pine and WWII relocation camp at Manzanar. Learn about the close, though sometimes strained relationship between the Owens Valley and Los Angeles that began with silver and lead. We'll challenge our vehicles to a steep climb on the Swansea Grade along the route of an old salt tram to the ghost mining city of Cerro Gordo.  Lots of scenic history and geology. Moderate 4-wheeling. Tour meets near Mojave (or in Lone Pine) and ends in Lone Pine.

(Kern and Inyo Counties)

Moderate 4-wheeling

Golden Leaves and Golden Trails

One one day we'll visit Aurora, Nevada (the original county seat of Mono County, Calif.). The next day we're off to the historic mining area of Dunderberg and the site of Jordan, where an avalanche erased Bodie's electricity. Stay two nights in Mammoth Lakes, Lee Vining or Bishop. Tour starts and ends in Mammoth Lakes.

(Mono County, California and Mineral County, Nevada)
