Yesterday (5/3/08) my horse " Black Velvet " had a Dr appt to get her shots and her teeth "floated" ... floated meaning ground down . My sister had her horses' teeth done before but I was never there to witness it ... the whole process ! This was a first for me ! The vet literally uses a power drill to do it ... modified though for a horse's mouth .
The hardest part for me to see, was her being tranquilized ! She was way drugged out, no pep in her step and she hung her head at the ground . The Vet put a harness around her head, used a "mouth speculum" to keep it open, lifted her head up, and then out came the power drill .
Thought I would share some pics and video of the process so you can see what all is done ...

yah it's pretty grody ( like totally, fer sure ! ) !
It's the first time I've had to do it since I've owned her . July 1st, is my 4 yr anniversary of being her mommy .
Horses' teeth grow like a rabbit... the food they eat constantly wears them down. Horses in the wild wear theirs down naturally by the "roughage" . Im assuming the domesticated horses' feed isn't as coarse and so therefore, they need a little help by a vet . A normal horse should get their teeth done about every 3 yrs. A horse my sister in law had ( Sundance R.I.P ), only needed the "Teeth Floating" done once in his whole life ! Just depends on the horse, its diet and its genetic make up !
