History: This distant cousin of calcite, selenite belongs to theSatin-Spar crystal family along with Aragonite. Selenite (CaSO4·2H2O) is ahydrous calcium sulfate, as it is composed of oxygen, sulfur, hydrogen, calciumand water. It is a major rock forming mineral that produces massive beds, usually from precipitation out of highly saline waters. Since it forms easilyfrom saline water, gypsum can have many inclusions of other minerals and eventrapped bubbles of air and water. Gypsum has several variety names that arewidely used in the mineral trade. Selenite has been found in a variety ofenvironments and geological locations and growing in different forms. Selenitecan be found floating in beds of clay not attached to any type of matrix orhost stone. It can grown in curved patterns and flower-like petals and arecalled Desert Rose. One of the most beautiful Selenite formations in the worldis the Cave of Swords in Chihuahua Mexico. Over 97 million years ago waterbegan seeping through ancient limestone formations dissolving the sulfide oreswithin producing a sulfuric acid. The water also absorbed large amounts ofcalcium and as this reacted with oxygen and hydrogen, Selenite"swords" or "wands" began growing. Specimens from the Caveof Swords are some of the clearest and largest in the world.
