SERPENTINE

Colour:  Shades of green, yellow, red and brown

Lustre:  Waxy to vitreous

Hardness:  3 to 4

The name serpentine derives from the ancient belief that the stone was a remedy against snake bites. This idea may have stemmed from serpentine’s sinuous patterning, as well as its colouration reminiscent of snakeskin. It is metamorphic, forming from olivine-rich rocks, and is principally found in the UK (in particular, Cornwall), Italy, South Africa, Russia and the USA. The fibrous form of serpentine is asbestos (also known as chrysotile), which should not be used, because its dust can cause serious lung diseases, such as emphysema. However; the massive form of serpentine is completely safe

Identification and Care

Serpentine is easy to identify by its slippery, soapy feel

Bowenite is a pale variety, often called “new jade

It is soft enough to be scratched by other stones, so should be stored carefully

Magick

Has the power to avert harm

Allays fears

Develops psychic skills

Healing Functions

Enables absorption and use of prana (life-energy) throughout the body

Calms and stabilizes the mind

Heightens perception

Good for meditation and the harmonious integration of new states of awareness

Practical Ideas

Consider using serpentine when anxieties and fears prevent proper relaxation and rest. Nightmares, insomnia, paranoia and fear of the unknown can be eased by wearing or holding this stone

To calm a restless mind whirring with thought: place serpentine at the throat and heart; carnelian at the sacral chakra; smoky quartz below the feet; and an amethyst above the head
