Ceremony to Heal a Relationship
Adapted from The Essence of Incense, by Diana Rosen (Storey Books, 2001).

Life is as fleeting as a rainbow. A flash of lightning, a star at dawn. Knowing this, how can you quarrel?
--Buddha

Healing a rift with someone close to you often requires an initial period of reflection on what has disturbed the relationship and what will bring about reconciliation. How can we open our hearts? What will ease our minds and soothe our bodies?

Here is a simple but powerful two-part ritual to help you begin the process of healing your relationship, and begin anew.

Lighting incense, particularly one with a fragrance connected with comfort, such as sandalwood, can help create a soothing atmosphere for such reflection. Choose a quiet place, perhaps where the disagreement took place. Or you might sit in front of your home altar with symbols before you of the relationship that needs healing. These symbols can be letters, photos, pages from your journal, anything that speaks of the person or persons involved.

Light the incense. Breathe in its therapeutic scent. Lift up your shoulders and roll them three times forward and three times backward until they are fully relaxed. Allow the incense to burn out completely.

Sometimes we don’t know why or how division has pushed us away from the people or places we care about. Separation sometimes just happens. Other times we remember harsh words, misunderstandings, and exclusions from the fold. It all hurts, but the pain does not have to last forever.

A phone call, a letter, even an email, can be the beginning of erasing the line of separation. As long as the goal is pure, coming together again can happen.

Choose an incense fragrance that is completely new to you. Try one that is pleasant and light to reflect your cleansing, perhaps a citrus scent, which is associated with fresh energy. You might enjoy one of the delightful fragrance sticks imbued with a fruity aroma, such as mango, strawberry, melon, berry, or pear. By opening yourself up to something as simple as a different fragrance, you begin the path to other changes. In your own way, ask for the strength and clarity to bring about change in your life and your relationships

Hearth Folklore

For ancient cultures, the hearth was the center of the home.
It was the provider of warmth through the harsh winter months, and also provided heat for cooking all meals.  It was the gathering place of the household.

Fire has a special attraction for all of us.  Within its smoke and flame lie the origin of many religions.  Fire, the element of transformation, causes change to occur.  It can be destructive, but through destruction comes creation.  The fire in the house was never allowed to die.

It was considered unfortunate if the household fire went out during the night.  If this occurred, hot coals would need to be borrowed from neighbors.  If the coals died while being transported home, it was an omen that the family would have an unlucky future.
Today, the fireplace is viewed as the heart of the home, as well as an altar to natural forces that shape our work.  Because the chimney is regarded as a magical entrance" to the home, it has been magically guarded. Plants can be utilized for this.

Olive branches hung on the chimney serve to ward against lightning strikes.
Pine needles scattered in the fireplace work in a similar manner.

Crossing fireplace tools in front of the fireplace is said to prevent sparks from popping out onto the floor.

A jar of salt on the hearth can be used during any period of argument or tension: throw a pinch on the flames, and its cleansing powers will bless your home.

Three circles drawn in white chalk on the hearth will ban evil from entering.

According to folklore, fire must have at least thirteen sticks in order to burn properly.

When the fireplace was cold, witches would rake the ashes into a circle, then cast spells within the circle.

A fire is useful for transformative spells, such as those utilizing rosemary or rose petals, which are cast into the flames. Combining this with the proper visualization would bring love to the spell-maker.

Nettles thrown into the fire will conquer fear.

The type of wood being burned can affect your spells.
*Use oak for healing magic, for instance, when someone in the home is sick. This wood helps to draw off the illness and protects the rest of the household.

*Ash logs promote energy, while pine brings money into the home.

Hearth Spirit

Spell to call upon a Hearth Spirit
source unknown

For your dwelling-place to be a true home, a household spirit needs to live within its walls. So that a good brownie may be induced to take upresidence, take kitty on one side, and utter this magick charm over her/his head three times:

Little one, without a name
Come inside and make much game,
I send my cat upon this errand
To seek you out till you be found
And may you of good heart be
And truly charming company.

Then let kitty run off, and when she comes home again you must watch her/him closely; you will see her skit and play, patting a little at the air,and growing kittenish as though a child played with her.
So by littlesigns and signals you will come to recognize that a brownie has entered your house; and you may be confident that he will soon make himself known to you.

Never frighten or abuse him, but thank him for the taskshe performs, and always praise his handiwork

Happy Vacation Meditation

Color of the day: Black
Incense of the day: Geranium

Disneyland opened in California on this day in 1955. Wear vacation
clothes as you go into your sacred space. Begin by singing fun camp
songs or travel songs to remind you of the fun you’ve had on vacation.
Light myrrh-scented incense and light a candle in your favorite color.
Breathe in the delightful, invigorating smell of the space and close
your eyes. Find yourself in your vacation spot in the most perfect
weather. See yourself in the center of all the action. Envision the
delights of your vacation in happy detail. See your companions laughing,
talking, praising you, and hugging you. Feel the perfect weather, and
hear all the sights and sounds you anticipate. Notice the feelings that
this anticipation awakens in you. Envision those feelings as a ball of
wonderful light in your hands. Then take that ball of light and move it
into your heart. Breathe in those feelings and let it infuse your whole
being. When you are done, return to your sacred space. Let go of the
expectations of your vacation and hold on to the feelings of pleasure.

Honor to Atum

Color of the day: White
Incense of the day: Geranium

Atum is the creator god in the Egyptian pantheon. He was conceived in
Ptah’s heart and is considered to be “perfection.” We live in a world of
creation, and many of us are actively creative ourselves. We all have
inherent creativity, whether we acknowledge it or not. Create an altar
to Atum, giving thanks for all that is good in your world and your life.
Create a song, a dance, a story, a painting, a poem. If you and your
partner want to have a child, this is a good day to conceive one.
Celebrate the creation around you by performing an act of creation
yourself. Consider how to live your life as a constant act of positive
creation.

Hunter's Talisman

Color of the day: Black
Incense of the day: Ylang-ylang

With the crops cleared, the deer, rabbits, pheasants, quail, and other
animals are easy to see as they roam through the fields looking for
food. Thus, the Full Moon after the Harvest Moon is called the Hunter’s
Moon. Other names include Blood Moon, Travel Moon, and Dying Grass Moon.
Hunting for food is an ancient and honorable tradition, pitting the
hunter’s wits and skill against the prey’s cunning and speed. Magic to
aid hunting ranks among the oldest of human activities. This charm
attracts prey within range. You need some cracked corn, and a talisman
of leather, bone, antler, feather, etc. from the type of animal you wish
to hunt. For the three nights of the full Hunter’s Moon, go into the
woods or fields and pour out a handful of corn. Hold the talisman in
your dominant hand and say:

As it was, it remains today:
Death feeds life,
And life honors death.
Come to me, my prey!
I will give you a good death,
And praise you
With my breath.

When you hunt, carry the talisman. If you don’t hunt yourself, you may
cast this spell for a friend.

Honoring Persephone

Color of the day: Black
Incense of the day: Sandalwood

As the year turns to the darkest
nights, we honor Persephone as
she returns to her underworld
kingdom. Forget images of a shy
maiden tripping among the flowers:
Persephone is both a strong and
beautiful queen and a goddess.
This is a woman in her sexual
prime. Picture a young woman with
long brown hair, who holds up a
torch to help light your path in
the darkest of times. Persephone
can help you learn to mature with
grace, to move forward, and to
walk your own unique path in life.

"Persephone,
Bringer of the seasons of life,
Help me to move onward Without pain or strife.
Hold up your torch,
Help illuminate my path,
Bring me courage
And wisdom that lasts."

Heal Your Cat Spell

Color of the day: White
Incense of the day: Rose

This Friday night, tap into the loving energies of a Venus day and the
tides of the waning Moon and work this spell for healing your beloved
enchanted cat. Burn a green candle for Bast and a pink candle to invoke
warm, fuzzy feelings and to represent the affection you feel for your
kitty. Add a picture of your cat to rest between the candles, or just a
few loose strands of cat hair (you know there are a few of those lying
around—probably on your clothes). Once the candles are lit, hold your
cat gently in your lap or arms, and repeat the charm.

Cat-headed goddess Bast, Please hear my call,
Send healing to my cat
As the night falls.
With the energies of
Tonight’s waning Moon,
Banish sickness and injury, Bring health soon.

Honor the Ideals

Color of the day: Silver
Incense of the day: Lily

Bastille Day commemorates the birth of the French republic and the
fight for liberty, equality, and fraternity. Today is the ideal time to
honor all those who work and fight for these rights. Take time to
consider what these words mean to you and how you work for them in your
life. Then make a list with two columns. In the first column, write down
every way that you work toward these goals. In the second, write down
ideas for how you might be more effective or take different actions in
your fight. Then place three white candles around your list. As you
light the first candle, honor all those who have worked for liberty,
equality, and fraternity. With the second candle, honor yourself for all
that you have done in this fight. And with the last, choose to continue
your work and try out your new ideas.

Home Energy Ritual

Color of the day: Rose
Incense of the day: Thyme

This Full Moon falls upon the birthday of the Egyptian goddess Nephthys,
she who is mistress of the house, making this an excellent time for some
magical housework. Spend time today focused on your home’s energy.
Slowly go through the rooms, seeing them with the eyes of a new visitor.
Think about changes you would make to refresh the rooms and create a
better flow of energy. As you go through the house, gather twenty-five
items that have not been used for some time and are simply taking up
space. Box up these items for donation to a charity, focusing on the
idea of them bringing joy to someone else’s life. By doing so, you have
released blockage from clutter in your home and freed up the energy once
more. Mix up an incense of equal parts dragon’s blood resin, benzoin,
and lavender blossoms; grind well in a mortar. Burn on a charcoal and
waft the incense smoke through the house.

Smoke of earth
And fire and air,
Clear my home
And make it fair.
Drive away
All harm and fear,
Only good
May dwell in here.
Lady Nephthys,
Bless my house,
Keep it free from
Bug or mouse.
Be welcome here,
Creatures of light,
While those unwelcome
Will feel thy might.
Protect me and mine
As we dwell within,
And keep us safe
As we journey about.

Halfway Spell

Color of the day: Indigo
Incense of the day: Patchouli

A bit more than halfway through the year is a good time to consider
what might be holding you back from creating exactly the year you
desire. Write down the top five things you want to accomplish this year,
along with anything you think may be limiting those goals. Fill your
hand with salt over your sink and allow the energy of those limitations
to fill the salt. Create a spiral in the sink with the salt, allowing
that energy to be drawn from you by the salt.

"Spiral of salt, purify me."

Pour a small amount of lemon juice into your hand and draw a spiral on
top of the salt.

"Spiral of lemon, cleanse me."

Turn on the water and watch it dissolve the spirals and take that energy
down the drain.

"Spiral of water, free me."

Turn off the water and feel that freedom to create.

Hatshepsut's Birthday

Color of the day: Amber
Incense of the day: Juniper

Hatshepsut was a female pharaoh in Egypt. Attempts to erase her from
history by smashing the temples and statues built during her reign
failed; in fact, she resides in her own room in the Metropolitan Museum
of Art’s Egyptian wing. Hatshepsut was a patron of the arts. Celebrate
her birthday by performing an act of creation in her name. Write, paint,
dance, take photographs, cook, sew, create a collage—perform any
creative act and dedicate it to her. Find a photograph of one of her
sphinxes and place it on your desk. Do a bit of research and “discover”
another artist history has forgotten. Honor that person’s work in
Hatshepsut’s name. She was a smart, intelligent, determined woman, and
under her reign Egypt’s intelligentsia flourished. How can you continue
her legacy? By creating, yes, but also by supporting and encouraging
your fellow artists.

Home and Hearth Spell

Color of the day: Silver
Incense of the day: Hyssop

At this time of year our activities turn inward. And since this is a New
Moon, it would be appropriate to renew our spirit and ready the home for
the quiet months ahead. With the Sun in Libra, work to create a safe,
cozy haven for you and your family. Seasonal decorations are a good
place to start. Mums, pumpkins, squash, and Indian corn aren’t just for
looks—they’ll charge your environment with fertility and prosperity.
Scent the home with fragrant candles—apple, pumpkin pie spice, and cider
scents are good choices. Bittersweet should be hung outside or inside,
and it’s an excellent addition to an autumn love spell. For some New
Moon magic, try writing a wish on a red or orange maple leaf and then
releasing it on the autumn wind. During this New Moon, don’t forget to
ready your property for the wild creatures you share your space with.
Bird feeders should be cleaned and filled. Leave some corn for the
squirrels. Doing these things now will keep our animal friends coming
back. For a New Moon exercise, bless an orange candle. Light it and
think of something you’d like to change in your home, or environment.
Scry into the flame and your answer shall be found.

Harvest Mare Spell

Color of the day: Gray
Incense of the day: Ylang-ylang

The harvest was a time of many ancient folk customs in Wales. These were
often connected with the Gwrach (“Hag”) or the Caseg Fedi (“Harvest
Mare”), an ornament made from the last tuft of grain to be harvested.
Reaping hooks were skillfully cast toward the last sheaf, and whoever
touched the sheaf cried out that they had gotten “Gwrach, gwrach,
gwrach!” (A hag, a hag, a hag!), or else “Pen medi bach mi ces!” (I got
a little harvest-mare!). Weave a small horse from straw and set it on
your harvest altar. Make offerings of cakes, ale, and the first fruits
of the harvest:

O spirit of the corn,
Hag of the harvest,
Divine harvest mare,
I honor you!
She who transforms
And nourishes,
Goddess of the Earth,
The fields, and the grain.
I welcome you,
And bid you farewell
As you cycle through the year And bless us again!

Hildegard of Bingen

Color of the day: Yellow
Incense of the day: Lavender

Hildegard of Bingen was an extraordinary woman of the twelfth
century. She was a nun in Germany, a visionary, mystic, composer, poet,
healer, and an herbalist. She was well-traveled and highly regarded by
those in power during her time. Consider her words and meditate on them.

I, the fiery life of divine wisdom, I ignite the beauty of the plains.
I sparkle the waters, I burn in the Sun, and the Moon, and the stars.
I am the breeze that nurtures all things green.
I encourage blossoms to flourish with ripening fruits.
I am led by the spirit to feed the purest stream.
I am the rain coming from the dew that causes the grasses to laugh
with the joy of life.

In Honor of Women

Color of the day: Pink
Incense of the day: Cypress

In Christian Catholic tradition, today is the Assumption of the
Virgin Mary. This day the mother of Jesus took her seat in heaven. Some
tales say that this marked her death, while others say that she was
taken, body and all, into the heavens. This is a day to commemorate all
mothers and the sacrifices women make for the continued health and
survival of their families, and is even a public holiday in France,
Spain, Cameroon, and Guatemala. A fitting way to commemorate the day is
to light a blue candle or a blue novena candle with Mary on it (you can
purchase them from a grocery store). Rub a little olive oil on the
candle before burning it (olive oil was used to anoint royalty) and
speak your own prayer to the divine mother. This is a day to pray for
women activists to find peace and success in their efforts.

Honoring Vesta

Color of the day: Lavender
Incense of the day: Hyssop

Today is the third day of Vestalia, a Roman festival devoted to
Vesta, the virgin goddess of hearth and home. During this week-long
period of festivities the women made sacrificial offerings at her altars
throughout the city. The Virgo Moon invites us to enter the temple of
Vesta today. We come before this goddess who embodies purity, duty, and
order. Here we can learn the principles of health, self discipline, and
the practical application of skills. We can honor these gifts by
pledging to keep the hearth fire burning in our own holy dwelling, our
physical bodies. She reminds us that compassion toward oneself fosters
creativity. So adorn yourself with the veil of Vesta and acknowledge her
with a personal sacrifice. Step forward and receive her blessing and
surrender your offering into the sacred flame.

Healthy Skin Magic

Color of the day: Pink
Incense of the day: Yarrow

Both men and women can look their best every day with some healthy
skin care. Throw in a little magic and you are ready for anything! To
keep your skin healthy and glowing, mix half a cup of oatmeal and half a
cup of water to form a paste. Add three teaspoons of milk and one
tablespoon of honey. Apply to your face. As it dries, feel the cleansing
and tightening of the paste. Visualize yourself healthy and radiant.
Then wash it off with warm water. After this deep cleaning, tone your
skin with a rosewater splash: blend three cups witch hazel, two
tablespoons rose oil (for dry skin) or half a cup dried rose petals (for
oily skin), and one teaspoon of rosemary or lavender. As you mix,
visualize yourself refreshed and youthful. Strain out the herbs and
splash it on your face.

Cycles and Habit Breaking Ritual

The following spell is designed to break cycles, habits, or trends that you wish to be broken.  It can also be used as a luck spell to change the apparent cycle of bad luck in certain peoples lives.  The cycles that it works best with are relationship patterns, sleeping patterns, and diet (eating) patterns.  Other cycles that it may be used for in cases were the cycle or pattern is not severe are accident cycles (accident prone people), job patterns, abuse patterns - specially for child and/or spouse abuse (*NOTE* this spell is to stop the abuser from being that way, not the abused), and possibly addictions - though I would STRONGLY recommend a Shamanic path-work and ceremony for that.
Materials:

a.. Corn husks - whole not powdered or chopped
b.. Twine or cotton string - fairly heavy gauge
  c.. A quartz shard - roughly 2-4 " long
d.. Thin strips of cloth or paper - ½" high, 5" long
e.. A felt tipped marker - preferably a thin point
f.. A large metal bowl or a fire pit - a fireplace will also work
g.. Wood - thin and very dry branches for best results
  h.. Lighter fluid
i.. A box of long wooden matches
j.. A bag of white sage - used as incense
k.. A bowl of cold water
l.. Metal tongs (like the ones used for cooking and serving corn)

Preparation:

Start the spell by making two figures or dolls out of the corn husks and string.  These will be used to represent you as you are now, and you as you will be in the near future.  They  need not be too detailed.  Do this step in advance - even up to a few days before the spell if you wish.  Also, in preparation, find a spot where you can light a fire.  A fireplace in a house will work just fine, but an outdoor fire pit would be even better.

The Spell:

At the beginning of the spell, start your fire with the dry branches - be sure to make the fire on the small side, since you will have to wait for it to burn completely out to finish the spell.  Also, too many branches will make the fire too hot, and possibly ruin the spell.  The lighter fluid can help to start the fire - just keep from making a mushroom cloud and scaring the neighbors. If you use lighter fluid, be sure to use the long matches - you don't want to interrupt the spell with a visit to the ER.

Once your fire is going, and fairly hot, take one of the corn husk dolls in your hand and empower it with your essence.  Close your eyes, clench the doll, and visualize yourself into the doll - see it as you.  Now, take the quartz shard, and do the same.  The quartz represents your spirit, so empower it with your spiritual essence.  Take the shard, and insert it into the doll's chest. Now, take something that is you to really connect you to the doll - if you have hair to spare (bald guys, look under your shirt for hair J ) pluck a piece and either tie it to the doll or stuff it inside the doll.  If this is impossible, drop a tear, or some sweat, or (in a worst case) a little saliva.

Now, grab a few of those strips of paper or cloth and the marker.  On each strip, write down a cycle you wish to break - make them present tense and active phrases.  Example: If the cycle you are trying to break is a bad dating pattern, write things like - "my boyfriend will cheat on me.  My girlfriend will be mean. My boyfriend will hit me.  My girlfriend will drink to much. Etc."; if the cycle you are trying to break is diet then use phrases like "I will eat to much for lunch tomorrow.  I will enjoy fatty foods.  I will snack to much.  I will always eat twice as much as I should. Etc."; the object is to write down the things you have been doing
wrong to cause your cycle.  For the more abstract cycles and heavy concepts such as accident prone and abusive people, you may use phrases like "I will trip and fall down.  People will knock things out of my hands.  I will walk off balance." And "My dad hit me,
so I'll hit my kids. My husband is cruel to me, so I'll take it out on others. I will snap at people.  I will resort to violence. Etc.".

Take these strips with the phrases on them and tie them to the doll with the crystal in it.  Hold the doll in your hand and proclaim "My spirit is clean and true, and my shell is damaged.  I shall cleanse this shell and re-emerge pure at heart, mind, and body". Now, to strip the shell from your spirit you must burn it away.  Pour a little lighter fluid on the doll and throw it into the fire. Ask the spirits to take back these energies that cause these cycles to happen, that tell them that your shell needs to be stripped and cleansed, and then put back.  Watch the fire as it quickly burns away the doll, along with the unwanted energy and patterns. The thoughts written on the strips are literally burned away from your core - the crystal.  After the doll burns enough, you should be able to see the crystal in the ashes.  When you can, take the metal tongs and remove the crystal - don't touch it as it will be
hot.  Let the crystal air cool for at least 5 - 10 minutes, then drop it in the cold water (if you do this to fast, the crystal will shatter).  After a minute or two in the cold water, remove the crystal and clean off any carbon or suite - you may want to wipe it off with a towel.

Now that you have removed all the unwanted energy and burned off the bad habits and cycles, it is time to re-integrate your essence into your new body and thus give yourself a 'clean slate' to start with.  Take the crystal and the second doll in your hands, and
visualize your spirit re-entering your body.  Take the crystal and insert it into the doll - do this slowly, and feel your spirit enter your body, feeling cool and clear and un-cluttered.  When the crystal is all the way into the doll, put the doll down and relax - pay attention to the energy in your body.  Notice the difference in your aura from before you started the spell.  Let the energy fill you, clean you, and most of all - heal you.

Take the new doll and bury it in the ground - this is the act of giving back to mother earth, and sending her your energy and thanks.  The spell is now complete, and you have shed your bad cycles.
