What is a Wiccaning?
By Gerina Dunwich

The Wiccaning Rite is a Wiccan birth rite by which a newborn baby is given it's legal name by his or her parents, and then is spiritually "purified" and blessed in the divine names of the Gods.*

The rite is traditionally performed by the High Priestess of a coven, but there is no reason why a Solitary Witch cannot perform it as well.**

It should take place during a Waxing or Full moon*** (never during a Waning moon) and preferably when the lunar position corresponds with the child's astrological sign. For instance. When the waxing or Full Moon is in Taurus or in any of the other earth signs, is the ideal time to perform a Wiccaning for a child born under the Earth sign Taurus the Bull.

Wiccaning
By: Ed Fitch

On the first night after a baby is born, or the same night that the birth takes place, the mother or father (or midwife, if she is a close friend or relative) should take the infant out under the stars. The child should first be held up to the sky, saying:

"O Lady of the Starry Heavens, Wise All-Father,
Behold this lovely child ________.
Conceived and brought forth
In love."

Place the child on the ground, hands under the head, briefly, saying:

"Hail Earth, Mother of All.
This is my infant, my love,
And my jewel.
Bless and protect him/her,
Granting your enduring and eternal
Strength, and steadfastness.
May he/she ever have a spirit
That seeks the stars,
And roots deep within
Thy loving breast."

One should then clasp the child close and look about for a few minutes, for those who are gifted with second sight are often able at this time to see prophesies for the child or the mother.

RE:Wiccaning
(Date Posted:02/17/2009 07:46 AM)

Another Typre of Wiccaning
Goal:
This ritual is for the purpose of formally naming a child, and presenting him or to the universe. It is a first rite of passage for a new life, called “christening” in Christianity.

Preliminaries:
Do this ritual when the parents are sufficiently recovered from the birth that they feel like contending with people again! Rushing this can spoil the joy of it for exhausted families. Some traditions chose to do this at a specific time, for example the first new moon after the birth date, the equinox or solstice of the season in which the child is born, etc. Pick when you feel would be most appropriate.

Invite people who care about this child, and will be watching over it. Family (by blood or chosen), Goddess Parents, if any, and friends. Advise people that they may bring a small, symbolic gift to the child if they so desire. This need not be costly or traditional things like toys or clothing, though that is okay too, it could be a poem, a gemstone, a collection of photographs or something the person made for the child. Ideally many of these things can be saved so that the child can have them again at age 18 or so, to see all the wishes people had for them. Some examples might be “I bring this book and candle to {child’s name}, in hopes her intellect will burn brightly”. “I bring this teddy bear to {child’s name}, in hopes that she will feel safe and comfortable throughout her childhood”. “I bring this song to {child’s name}, in hopes she will be blessed with appreciation of music.” etc.

If the baby cries through this, no problem. He/she is just participating! Announcing their presence, just go with it in the ceremony, do not become frustrated.

Supplies:

Standard altar set up, and a candle to match the color of the zodiac sun sign under which the child was born. Guests and their symbolic gifts, parents and siblings of the child and their symbolic gifts. If the name has a visual symbol, you may place something on the altar to symbolize it, in our example, a {child’s name} feather for {child’s name}.

Ritual
Set up the altar, call the quarters, cast the circle and invite the deities. A sample deity invitation is below, use appropriate invocations for other deities of you choice.

“Great Goddess Artemis, protector of the young.
We ask that you attend this rite, and welcome this child to the moonlit earth.”

“Great God Apollo, golden brother, god of heroes and poets,
We ask that you attend this rite, and welcome this child to the sunlit earth.”

Parents approach altar with baby.

Priestess: Who is this new traveler?

Parents: {child’s full name}

Priestess: Raise censer of incense and draw pentacle in the air before the child. “I bless you [child’s name] with the power of fire and air”.

Draw pentacle on child’s third eye with salt water on finger. “I bless you, {child’s name} by the power of earth and water.

Priest: “Lord Apollo, Guide her in the ways of kindness and courage. Let her be valiant and wise, as you are. Give to your talents and appreciation for poetry, art and music. Warm her through the long days of learning ahead.”

Priestess: “Lady Artemis, protect {child’s name} with your vigilance, let her breathe in your fresh air of the forest. Let her be strong, free and independent as you are. Guide her hunt for her own path. Protect her through the darkest of nights, and help her ponder the infinity of the starry sky.”

Parent: One of the parents takes baby and faces him/her in each direction, starting with east. Once Priest/ess has made the blessing for that direction, the walk slowly clock wise until they face the next direction, where they pause for the next statement.

Priest: Hail East! Recognize this person [child’s name]. Help her to soar in the limitless sky of thought and imagination. Send [child’s name] gentle breezes to guide her on her path. Bless [child’s name] with all the airborne powers of the East.

Priestess: Hail South! Hail East! Recognize this person [child’s name]. Warm her, strengthen her Will with your energy. Send [child’s name] light to help her prevail in the challenges that await her. Bless [child’s name] with all the burning powers of the South.

Priest: Hail West! Recognize this person [child’s name]. Help her to swim the deep seas of emotion and empathy. Send [child’s name] cleansing waters to cleanse her of doubts and confusion. Bless [child’s name] with all the flowing powers of the West.

Priestess: Hail North! Recognize this person [child’s name]. Help her to stand firm on mother earth. Send [child’s name] rich soil to root in, and connect her with all that is. Bless [child’s name] with all the solid powers of the North.

Optional God/dess Parent Component:

The Goddess Parents should be brought forth then to the center of the circle, and the parents as well. one parent should hold the baby.

Priestess: In times past, children were not the sole responsibility of the biological parents. This responsibility is too great for any one or two people to bear alone. I hope that all in the community would help a child in need. As a reminder that children need many sources of support, the tradition of the god/goddess parents arose. These chosen people will have a special relationship with {child’s name}, will be there should she need someone outside the home to talk to. To share experiences, and to be a “neutral” and loving third party should the family need help.

The parent should say {God/dess parent’s name or names} will you participate in the upbringing of this child, {child’s name}. Will you be their to listen to her, and help and advise us for her welfare if necessary?

God/dess parents answer

Parent passes the child to the god/dess parent. If there is more than one, the goddess parent holding the child repeats the speech and then hands it to the other or next god parent. Then the parent takes the child back and says.

God/dess parent(s): Bless and keep you {child’s name}. I will be here for you.

Name Chant

The parent(s) then sit or stand in the center of the circle with the baby, and the group chants the baby’s name. For example, they might being Rob-in, Rob-in, {child’s name}, then people will start to say it in different ways, whispering it, singing it, saying it in different tones and inflections, it should make a musical sound to raise energy. When the power is at it’s peak the priestess or parent should call it by standing with the child and holding them up the energy then goes forth to the universe, declaring the presence of young {child’s name} and blessing the child. This energy could go into a protective shield for the child, if desired.

All eat cakes and wine, ground, open circle, thank and say farewell to quarters and deities. and celebrate, and probably change the baby!

As part of the celebration, make a time to let each person present their symbolic gift to the child, and state their wishes. It is best to go around for this so everyone can hear and join in this portion of the ceremony. This may be done inside the circle before the called and wine if desired.

Wiccaning Ceremony #3

There are many forms to this and like all else I suggest you find one that is suitable for you and your child(ren). Devise one of your own, or compile one from information you have found. There are no right or Wrongs to anything that you can come up with. So long as you include the basics, words can be modified...so on and so forth.

Here I will post a Wiccaning Ceremony that I have. Well one of them anyways. There is another but I would much prefer the mother of the child we had wiccaned to post that one if she is up to it; seeing as it is her ceremony that she had come up with to suit her and her daughter(my goddaughter).

*Note...the following Wiccaning was meant for a girl so most of the work will be done by the High Priestess with the Father of the child(ren) doing most of the other stuff, if the child is a boy then the High Priest and Mother of the child(ren) will do the majority of it. As well, in this Wiccaning, both the High Priest and High Priestess that are preforming the ceremony are Godparents as well. The same format will work for Godparents that you have chosen for your child(ren) even if they are not a High Priest or High Priestess performing your child's wiccaning.

Let us begin!

Erect your altar facing north as per usual. Consecrate your area, then call on the Gods and Goddesses, the Elemental Realms, and the Ancestors. You can use the one we had used for our Handfasting, just change the word "couple" to "child" or "children" if there is more than one child being Wiccaned. The High Priest and High Priestess consecrate the wine, water, and oil. they do not taste the wine but place the chalice on the altar.

The High Priestess then stands before the altar, facing the cauldron. The High Priest stands ready to hand her the oil, wine, and water.

The High Priestess:

We are met in this circle to ask the blessings of the Mighty God and the Gentle Goddess on , the daughter(s)/son(s) of also known as so that he/she/they may grow in beauty and strength, in joy and wisdom. There are many paths and each must find his/her/their own; therefore we do not seek to bind to one path while he/she/they are still young to choose, even if a path has already been chosen or determined by the Powers that Be. Rather we do ask the Gods and Goddesses who know all paths, and to whom all paths lead, to bless, protect, and prepare him/her/them through the years of his/her/their childhood; so that when at last he/she/they are truely grown, he/she/they shall know without doubt or fear which path is his/hers/theirs and he/she/they shall tred that path gladly.

of , bring the child(ren) forward so that he/she/they may be blessed.

The mother at this time helps the Father to rise if the said child(ren) are female, if the said child(ren) are male then it would the Father that helps the Mother to rise. Both parents then bring the child(ren) to the High Priestess, who takes him/her/them from the Father, or Mother. If there is an older child you need not hold them in your arms, but have him/her/them stand close by. Hold the babe firmly but not too tightly in your arms.

The High Priestess Asks:

, father of , do the child(ren) have hidden names(craft of eek names)?

The Father replies:

His/Her/Their hidden name(s) are .

The High Priestess then anoints the child(ren) on the forehead with oil, making a pentacle and saying:

I anoint thee and give thee the hidden name(s) of .

The High Priestess repeats the action with wine saying:

I anoint thee with wine, in the name of the Mighty God(s) . For us it was Lord Odin.

The High Priestess repeats the action with water saying:

I anoint thee with water, in the name(s) of the Gentle Goddess(es) . For us Isis, Astarte, Diana, Hecate, and Athena.

The High Priestess gives the child(ren) back to the parents and then leads them all to each of the watchtowers in turn saying:

Ye Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East, we do bring before you whose hidden name(s) are , those that have been duly anointed within the Wiccan Circle. Hear ye, therefore that he/she/they are under the Protection of the Gods and Goddesses.

Repeat the above replacing with South, West, and North.

The High Priest and High Priestess take their places facing the altar, with the Parents and child(ren) between them. they raise their arms and call in turn:

High Priest: Mighty Gods, bestow upon the/these child(ren) the gift of strength.
High Priestess: Gentle Goddesses, bestow upon the/these child(ren) the gift of beauty.
High Priest: Mighty Gods, bestow upon the/these child(ren) the gift of wisdom
High Priestess: Gentle Goddesses, bestow upon the/these child(ren) the gift of love.

The High Priestess asks:

Is there anyone in the circle who will stand with me as Godparents to ?

The High Priest Answers:

I will join with you.

They then face each other and speak the questions and the promises to each other.

The High Priestess asks the Godfather:

Do you, , also known as , promise to be a friend to  throughout his/her/their childhood, to aid and guide him/her/them as he/she/they shallneed; and in concord with his/her/their parents to watch over him/her/them and love him/her/them as if he/she/they were of your own blood, till the grace of the Lord and Lady he/she/they shall be ready to choose his/her/their own path if one is not already established?

The Godfather replies:

I, , also known as , do so promise.

The High Priest asks the Godmother:

Do you, , also known as , promise to be a friend to  throughout his/her/their childhood, to aid and guide him/her/them as he/she/they shallneed; and in concord with his/her/their parents to watch over him/her/them and love him/her/them as if he/she/they were of your own blood, till the grace of the Lord and Lady he/she/they shall be ready to choose his/her/their own path if one is not already established?

The Godmother replies:

I, , also known as , do so promise.

The High Priestess says:

The Gods and Goddesses have blessed this/these child(ren); The Guardians of the Watchtowers have acknowledged this/these child(ren); we his/her/their family have welcomed this/these child(ren), therefore, O circle of stars, shine in peace on whose hidden name(s) is/are .

So Mote it Be!

All say>>SO MOTE IT BE!

Egyptian Style Wiccaning Ceremony

Have ready:
  • rosewater (available at Middle Eastern and gourmet shops)
  • olive oil (beer would be more correct for Hathor, but who could put beer on an infant)
  • white wine or white grape juice
  • Blood of Thoth (warm water in which saffron threads have been infused overnight - only real saffron works, no substitutes) These could be placed in bowls on the altar, which should be draped with a white cloth. Dip a finger in each to make a pentacle on the baby's forehead.
  • some vervain,
  • fresh or dried garlic cloves
  • some bread clover,
  • fresh or dried (try a health food store, if you live in the city)
  • gold coins or jewelry
  • rosebuds, fresh or dried
  • a mojo bag, (small cloth bag) preferably sewed by one of the parents - this could be plain, or decorated in any way desired
  • Light three white candles to honor Artemis, who protects children.

Cast a circle to begin the ceremony.

Priest/ess: (with arms raised)

We are met in this circle to ask the blessings of the Goddess on ___________, Child of Promise, child of ___________ and ____________ so that he may know Her and grow in Her ways.
We ask the Goddess to bless, protect and guide __________ through childhood. We invoke Isis and entreat her to lead him away from darkness, that he may always walk in the light. We ask her to lead him to follow his bliss, that he may find his Path and walk it with joy.

Parent/s:

Ours/mine is the blood of mysterious union. We/I bring our/my child ____________, gift of the Goddess, forward to be blessed.

Priest/ess:

I anoint thee with the rosewater of Isis, and give thee the hidden name of ____________. I sign thee with the pentacle and place you under Her protection. We ask Isis, Queen of the Universe, to bestow upon this child the gifts of strength and magic.
I anoint thee with wine, in the name of Osiris. I sign thee with the pentacle for protection. May Osiris, Lord of Everlastingness, bestow upon this child the gift of life after death, that he may know reunion in the Summerlands and beyond.
I anoint thee with the Blood of Thoth and sign thee with the pentacle, for protection. We ask Thoth, Lord of Books, to bestow upon this child the gifts of wisdom, intelligence, and psychic power.
I anoint thee with oil in the name of Hathor, the Beautiful Face in the Boat of Millions of Years. I sign thee with the pentacle for protection. May Hathor bestow upon this child the gifts of love, joy, beauty and creative power.

Parent/s: (placing each item in the mojo bag as it is named - if possible, it should then be closed with a gold charm that contains a turquoise bead, and affixed to the swaddling clothes or baby blanket)

We give him garlic, to avert negative energy.
We give him vervain, for happiness and love of learning.
We give him clover to invoke Artemis, who protects children.
We give him bread, that he shall never know hunger.
We give him gold, that he shall never know want.
We give him roses, for love.

Priest/ess: (with hands raised in blessing)

Mighty Goddess, watch over him that is in his cradle, the Babe when he cometh forth to you.

The circle is then closed. The mojo bag should be safeguarded until the child is grown. If a tree is planted for the child, it could be buried beneath it.
