Altars for Little Witchlings

Children of any young age are eager to learn about everything it is that Mommy or Daddy do. Our project for this summer was Personal Altars.

An important thing is to make sure that you have safe space for your child to have his/her personal altar BEFORE you begin. We decided to use a variety of places for each child. One has a dresser top, another an old table we salvaged, while another made his from the stackable mesh squares.

Candles are not an option for young children. My children each have two battery operated candles for their altars. If one is choosing to perform a ritual, I have an additional 14 (I bought 2 dozen) that they can make construction paper outer coverings for in the correct colors they wish to use. This has worked extremely well.

They wanted incense on their altars because mommy has it on hers. This has been a challenge for me until.... You can purchase Quarts of milk in plastic bottles that look like the old fashioned milk bottles. They can be colored with permanent markers easily. I traced small moons and stars on them, then cut them out with a craft knife. I weighed it down with sand mixed with Elmer’s glue in the bottom of the bottle. I drilled a hole in the cap large enough for a cork I got from the craft store. I, of course, have to light the incense, but this allows them a feeling of having the essentials.

I have encouraged the children to pick up small rocks, shells, interesting twigs or bark when we have gone on our jaunts around. They place these on their altars as their personal tokens.

As my children are still young, I have encouraged them to place the important things from their lives on their altars. These range from their "magic" Yu-Gi-Oh cards for one, to a Magic 8 ball for another.

They each chose a pentacle they liked from offline. We printed it with the coloring book option, then they each colored their own. This was put into a picture frame and serves as a tray as well as a pentacle.

Bells were of their choice should they want one. One has a cow bell, another jingle bells, while my oldest has a set of chimes.

By doing this, I hope I have opened up the next step in the Path for them. A personal place for them to have for their communication with the Lord and Lady.
