the first deliberate act of magic anyone ever performs is blowing out
the candles on a birthday cake: make a wish and if you blow them all
out together the wish will come true.
Those wanting to foster a belief in magic in their young are advised not to play tricks with non-extinguishable candles!
practice would seem to originate from the ancient Greeks who believed
that the candles symbolized the years of your life and by blowing them
out you indicated that you have completed the time passed and were
ready for time to come.
But there are other beliefs associated with the putting out of candles....
a candle be accidentally extinguished, or go out on its own accord, the
household will be either one fewer, or one greater, by the morning.
*If a candle burns down one side, but not the other, someone will betray you.
the Craft, it is said that a candle may be pinched out with moistened
fingers, or snuffed with a candle snuffer., but should never be blown
out. Some people believe (and I am one of those that do...) to blow out the candle, it is disrespectful to the Fire Element and even to the Salamanders which are creatures of Fire.
Most candle spells require that the candle should burn all the way down.
