Crafts and Activites are found right here to make Betaine a festive time of year.

Have Fun!!

May Pole Centerpiece

You will need: 18" wood dowel or thin branch, 6-9" diameter flat round wooden plaque, small grapevine wreath, approx.

6-8" diameter, decorated on both sides, 1 yard each of red and white ribbon, scissors, drill and a 1/4 drill bit, 1 1 1/4 length flattened wood screw, hot glue gun.

Drill pilot holes completely through center of plaque and 1/2 deep into the bottom end of the dowel.

Cross the ribbons and glue on top end of the dowel.

Attach the dowel to the stand by screwing the screw through the plaque, and then into the bottom end of the dowel.

Glue wreath on top of dowel by melting a medium dab of glue on top of the crossed ribbons and on the bottom of the wreath, then join the wreath to the top of the dowel.

To make it more secure wait a few minutes and then glue around the edge of the wreath where it meets the dowel, filling in gaps.

Braid the ribbons - one color going left and under the other color, which is moving right.

Braid about 2 inches down the dowel and tack to the dowel with hot glue to keep in place.

When set, tack the ends of the ribbons to the edge of the wood plaque with hot glue.

~ Ideas and Activities for Beltane ~

*Walk the perimeter of your property to check that everything is in good order. Bring trash bags and do a general clean up of anything that is not where it should be.

* Make a miniature Maypole for your altar if you can not make a full-sized version.

* Get a new mirror, or use one you have already, and decorate it with ribbons and flowers for your bedroom.

* Fill a cauldron or a large bowl with fresh flowers (wildflowers are best).

* Braid bracelets out of white ribbons and give them as gifts to friends or family.

* Make a dish of fruits, berries and nuts and leave in the wood for the animals and fae folk to enjoy.

* Cut branches of fresh green from budding trees (thank the trees for their gifts), or make garlands of flowers to decorate the home for this celebration. Hang them on the doors and windows early, so the May sunrise finds them there!

* Create a special wreath for the top of the May Pole.

* Make May Day baskets of flowers and leave on friends and family's doorsteps as a surprise gift. Maybe they'll think a faerie did it!

* Create hair pieces and garlands for decorating your head or around your neck from flowers that are in bloom.

* Tie ribbons to trees to celebrate the coming of Spring. Make a wish each time you tie a ribbon as it's good luck to wish for things on this day!

* Bathe your face in the morning dew to retain youth:

"The fair maid who, the first of May
Goes to the fields at break of day
And washes in dew from the Hawthorn tree
Will ever after handsome be!"

Other sources suggest using the dew found under Oaks or on Ivy leaves. Make a special wish as you wash your face in it or as you drink from a well before sunrise.

* Dance the May Pole

During the Maypole dance, think about what you wish to weave into, or out of, your spirit. The Maypole is an ancient symbol of the male aspect of the Divine, while the ribbons are strands of life.

* Have small baskets of goodies around the room to symbolize the coming abundance and to enjoy after Circle - magick is hungry work!

* Plant your frost sensitive bulbs now.

~ Fairy Furniture ~
May is a month that fairies love! Show them your appreciation and give the kids a great project by making them some furniture! Items needed:

* Twigs, vines, dried flowers
* Needle and thread
* Scrap material
* Scissors
* Hot glue gun - be sure little fingers are safe!
* Pruners to cut the twigs - again, watch those little fingers!
Directions:

Decide what you're going to make. We'll make a chair, to give you an example. Cut the twigs in this manner - one long, bendable piece that will form the back legs and back of the chair, and four equal length twigs which will form the two front legs and the seat. The chair should stand no more than four inches tall (including the back).

Bend the long twig, and hot glue one of the smaller pieces in between the two ends where you want the seat to be.This will be the back of the seat. Hot glue on each side of the bent twig facing towards you a smaller twig; these will be the sides of the seat. Glue the front piece of the seat to these side twigs. Glue the two front legs to the seat so that the chair legs are even. If you wish, wrap the vines around the chair back and legs. Cut the scrap fabric to form a "back" and a "seat" - these are NOT to be as wide as the chair, but will fit inside of the twigs. Using your needle and thread, attach the material to the chair using a whip stitch. Hot glue small dried flowers at the top of the chair. This technique can be used to make all kinds of fairy furniture, from tables to beds, to sofas - all of which are sure to delight your fairies as much as your children!

Things to do on Beltane:

* Sleep outside. If you can't go camping, try pitching
a tent in the back yard or putting sleeping bags on
the porch.

* Go out at sunrise and wash your faces in the morning dew. Folk wisdom says that this will help your inner beauty to shine on the outside.

* Explore the Beltane symbolism in the Robin Hood stories by watching movies or reading books.

* Honor your bodies by decorating them with henna, temporary tattoos, or body glitter. Brush each others hair.

* Make wreaths of flowers and vines to wear. Daisy chains are particularly appropriate, but silk flowers can be kept and used year after year.

* Have a crowning ceremony to pronounce everyone lords and ladies of May.

* Make bread in the shape of a star. Using frozen prepared bread dough is an easy shortcut. Eat a huge feast outdoors with your bread, barbecued meat, fruit and green salads and strawberries and ream for dessert!

* Walk the boundaries of your property to repair any winter damage and plant flowers.

* Create festive May baskets to fill with flowers. Recycled strawberry baskets can be fun to decorate. Pick wildflowers, or ask a florist for imperfect flowers. Give the finished baskets to neighbors.

* Invite friends and family to dance the Maypole. If it isn't possible to be outdoors, you can use a Yule Tree stand to set up a pole indoors. (Check out the Internet or your local library for more information on the logistics of such an undertaking. )

* Hang small edible treats on trees and bushes and let your guests nibble where they may. Make sure nothing gets left out overnight that could harm animals!

* Leap the bonfire! With care, it is possible for children to participate as well. Only a small fire is necessary; even a fire in your cauldron will suffice. Call out the things you want to cleanse or bring into action as you jmp.

* Take time after little ones are abed for the adults to connect with the primal sensual nature of Beltane

Beltane Flower Circlet Crowns

Materials Needed:

  • Fresh flowers of any kind with short (2-3") stems
  • A metal nail file (the kind with the point and plastic handle)

These days, you see all of these gorgeous chainmail head pieces... at exorbitant prices. Certainly these pieces are very beautiful, but for those of us more frugally minded Pagans, flower chains and crowns are much more economic.

The process of making flower crowns is a very simple, relaxing one. I love to sit in the field of my backyard in the middle of a buttercup patch (buttercups are great for this!) and make these. It may be a bit time consuming, but sometimes we just need to escape the non-stop, on-the-go world we live in and relax! This is great for that.

Pick up a flower and with the nail file, poke a hole in the part of the flower just under the blossom. Slip the stem of another flower into the hole, cutting the stem if you need to. Now poke a hole in that flower, and slip another flower 's stem into that hole. Continue until you have a chain long enough to sit on your head. To complete the circle, poke a hole in the last flower, and slip the stem of the first flower into that hole. From here, you can add more flowers, greenery, or even ribbons. Now you have a pretty circlet of flowers to wear in your spring and summer rites.

May Wreath

You will need: gravevine wreath, variety of flowers, greenery (ivy, rosemary, etc), decorative items (ribbons, figurines, etc), Scissors, glue or hot glue gun.

Assemble supplies.

  • The greenery goes on first.
  • Weave, wrap, or tuck it into the grapevein.
  • Glue it in strategic places.
  • Ivy, rosemary, and moss are a few ideas. Use fresh or dried.

Place a variety of flowers loosly around the greenery and glue them in place.

After all flowers are in place, add ribbons, figurines, or crystals.

Use this wreath for the top of your maypole.

May Garland

You will need: springs of greenery, variety of fresh or dried flowers, ribbons, floral wire, wire cutters, scissors, glue or hot glue gun.

Use a heavy wire backbone that runs the length of the garland.

Begin by starting at one end, attaching each bundle of greenery over the last.

Use floral wire to attach the bundles to the backbone.

Once all the greenergy and flowers have been attached with floral wire, add ribbons, bells, beads, crystals and any other decorative items you wish.

Put this over a doorway or on a mantle.

Maypole

(For Beltane)

Materials:

  • Flat piece of wood
  • Small wooden pole
  • A wooden knob for the top of the pole
  • Red and white lengths of ribbon
  • Beltane symbols: Nuts, spring flowers, strings of beads, miniature apples, for decoration around the bottom of the maypole
  • Glue gun

Directions:

Either drill hole into the flat wood base to insert pole or simply glue it to the bottom securely. Glue four equal lengths of ribbon to top, and seal knob on pole with glue, on top of the ribbons. Glue or place decorative items around base.

Ritual use:

During ritual, the maypole can be wound. Simply weave the ribbons in and out of each other in as pleasing a pattern as possible, fastening with sticky-tac or other less permanent adhesive (so that this apparatus can be used again next year in ritual). The symbolism of the maypole is that of the male phallic symbol (the pole itself) being enveloped by the female vaginal symbol (the ribbons). Also, the winding, when done in a traditional form by dancers around a real maypole, sometimes symbolize male-female mating with the red and white ribbons themselves.

Beltane Bagel Bird Feeder

You will need...

A Bagel, Peanut Butter, Bird Seed, Yarn or String

Directions:

1. Cut the bagel in half.

2. Spread peanut butter on a bagel half.

3. Dip peanut butter-covered side of bagel into bird seed.

4. Run a length of yarn or string through the center of the bagel and tie it into a loop.

5. Hang outside on a tree branch or fence.

6. Have fun watching the birdies eat!

Growing Beltane Basket

Greet the May Day spirit with this 'growing green basket'.
An ideal green gift to surprise with!

Supplies:

  • Empty Milk Cartons
  • lump of potting soil
  • Grass Seed
(fast growing if you have it)
  • a stapler
  • a roll of string and some wire
  • freshly picked herb sprigs,
  • flower heads (orchids, lilies, or others)
  • plant foliages( like ivy)

Take empty milk cartons, cut down to 4-5" high.

Cover the basket with construction paper and decorate.

Fill around 2/3 full with potting soil.
Then generously sprinkle grass and some weed seeds.

Have it watered daily. Grass should grow in about 4-7 days.

With the remaining cartons, cut a handle out and staple it to the basket.

Do not add other greens till the last moment. Wire some herb sprigs and flower heads such as orchids, lilies, foliages of ivy or the likes, in separate bunches. Add them to the basket before taking it out to be hooked on the door knob of your dear ones.

5. Early on the morning of May 1st, fill with real or handmade flowers.

6. Hang on your neighbor's door, a friend's, or anyone special to you. Remember, it's supposed to be a surprise!

Betlaine Pressed Flowers

Gather flowers from outside on a nice day. If the flowers are wet, you will have to let them air dry just a little before you press them. Press the flowers by placing them between the pages of heavy books. Old phone books are perfect for this. Make sure you place paper markers in the pages that have flowers so you will not have to go looking for them when you are done. Be sure not to use nice books or books that you are fond of as the flowers will often stain the pages. Once the flowers are in the books, stack the books on top of each other and place in an out-of-the-way spot. Check the flowers in one week. If they are not completely dry, leave them for another week. Flowers usually take about two weeks to dry. When the flowers are done you can make things with them such as bookmarks, stationery and cards. To glue the flowers down, use a mixture of 1/2 glue and 1/2 water. Paint the backs of the flowers and glue them down. Then use some of the glue mixture to coat the flowers. You can make clear bookmarks by pressing the flowers between two pieces of laminate paper.

Beltane Paper Flowers
-by AmberSkyfire

You will Need:

  • colored construction paper or tissue paper
  • glue
  • scissors
  • craft sticks or popsicle sticks
  • crayons

Draw flowers on the colored construction paper. You can use each color for different flowers or only one color. Use your imagination when making flowers. You can trace objects like your hand or a toy or use stencils. Color the flowers with the crayons and paste the flower parts together.

Glue the flowers onto the sticks and then add leaves that you have cut from green construction paper.

Paper flowers can be placed anywhere for decoration and look great in baskets. You can stick them in a flower pot of dirt or crumpled paper for lovely potted flowers that will never die. These flowers also make great gifts for loved ones.

Flowery Beltane Hat

A flowery May Day hat An elegant summer hat draped with fresh flower. Isn't this a great idea to celebrate the May Day. The real green way!

Supplies:

  • Poster board
  • a marker pen
  • one soft pencil
  • a pair of compasses
(one of those found in the geometry box)
  • a ruler
  • scissors
  • glue
  • transparent tape
  • twisted paper for decoration

Steps:

1.Before getting started, fix up the size of the hat roughly.
Tips: Place a ruler flat on the top of the wearer's head. Mark the two ends that hold the length of the wearer's head with a bright colored marker pen. Read the length. Place the ruler on a paper and mark these two marked-ends along the ruler with two dots.

2. Now, use a pair of compasses to draw a circle on colored poster board. Fix up the pencil from the needle of the compass at a length equal to the one read by the ruler.

3. For a better design, add some 5cm or 2 inches above the length you fix up. Now complete drawing the circle. When the first circle is finished, draw a second circle 2.5 cm or 1 inch inside the first one.

4. Make even cuts up to that 2.5 cm/1 inch deep from the edge of the paper to the penciled inner circle. Cut out the paper around the outer circle. This will help you to bend the posterboard along the line of the drawn circle. Fold the cut flaps of paper straight way up. (as shown in the picture)

5. For the sides of the hat, cut a strip of paper 7.5 cm/3 inches wide and long enough to fit around the folded-up edge of the paper circle. Then draw a line lengthways down the middle of the paper.

6.Make even cuts in the same way as before along the drawn line on the paper strip. Spread glue along the outer uncut side.

7.Stick the glued side of the paper band around the edge of the paper circle, ensuring that all the cut strips are neatly attached to it.

8.Cut a larger circle of card of contrasting color for the brim. Ideally it should be 7.5 cm/ 3 inches wider all around than the crown.

9. Cut out a circle from the center of the brim that measures the same diameter as the crown. Place the crown right way up on a surface, with the cut strips around the sides of the hat folded outwards. Then slide the brim into position. When you know it fits neatly, turn the hat over. And glue the cut strips in place on the brim. Secure them with transparent tape and leave to dry.

10. Add finishing touches with wide ribbons, bows and flowers.

House Happy Charm -

This is a small sachet pillow stuffed with good things,an excellent gift when people newly in love move in together. All the while you're assembling it, focus on their hopes, dreams and your bright wishes for their hearth

Make a small pillow (I usually do a 5x5 square) from an interesting material. Leave one end open for stuffing.

Gather, mix and empower the following herbs:

  • Sage and Sandlewood for blessing and protection
  • Lavender for domestic tranquility
  • Rose petals to honor their love
  • Vervain for bright witchery
  • A couple drops of cinnamon oil.
Stuff the pillow and sew the open end shut.

Decorate as desired

In sacred space, dedicate it under the auspices of the Lord and the Lady

If you're blessing your friends home for them, include the pillow in the ritual. If they're doing their own home blessing, offer it as a house warming gift.
