RE:WELCOME TO APRIL CHECK IN
(Date Posted:04/14/2013 8:04 AM)

Good Morning Everyone.

Look out ~ I'm likely to be crabby today. I've been mostly awake since 3AM. Combination of headache (for which I should have gotten up and taken asprin) and stress over the retaining wall we still haven't been allowed to find out about, and the concern that one fine day, without getting our approval or letting us get the HOA's, they will just dump a palate of bricks on our driveway. In the middle of the night, that is very stressful. In the morning sunlight, still concerning but not quite as stressful. Anyway, I dozed more than slept so I'm likely to not be at the top of my game today. Not that I ever am anymore. smiley51

Our weather is still insane. Mid 60s and beautiful yesterday. Mid 50s and rain predicted for today, and 4 to 6 inches of SNOW predicted starting Monday night and on through Tuesday. Enuf, already! lol

Mike's ankle seems to be better today ~ I hope! I finally talked him into taking asprin, and that helped. In the past he has taken Advil, but with the new medicines, Advil makes him dizzy! Anyway, I hope it's really on the mend. It's been terribly painful for him.

Lou Ann, it's nice that you had a chance to watch a couple of your shows.  On Demand has been a life saver for us.  "They" keep scheduling all the things we like at the same time, and then the next night almost nothing we watch.

Your Chinese meal sounded wonderful.  Mild Sesame Chicken is my favorite, and we love Crab Rangoons and of course the fortune cookies.   Love all the leftovers even more!

Your Plugin Lesson tag is beautiful!   Is there a location where you can get all, or at least some, of the plugins and/or filters?  Every time I have changed PCs I have lost filters, and with this last change I lost them all.  I have a few that I bought that are in the box and can be installed (Eyecandy, etc), but even when I google for plugins or filters I don't seem to find things that are easy to install and free.    I don't want to sign up for the course you took because I know I don't want to devote the time to it.

GrannieM, is the new wheel chair any better?   I really hope they have been able to fix it for you.  It's awful that you had to wait so long, and even worse that it wasn't perfect when it came.

I hesitate to admit it, but I ordered a Rollator from Amazon.   I'm too vain to want to use it to walk in the neighborhood ~ hopefully I'll get over that.  lol.  What I do plan to use it for is to walk on the uneven ground to plant flowers in my little pots in front of the house.  I hope the seat isn't too high and I'll be able to sit and plant.  Even if it can get me to the plants I'm not sure how long I can bend over to do the planting without screaming, and that would be embarassing.

Carolyn told us that Tom wasn't talking on the phone anymore and that she took his cell phone home. Then yesterday she called Mike's sister for Tom and they talked a little bit.

The benefit is this morning ~ a breakfast. Then tomorrow Carolyn will go back to Rochester for a follow up at the Mayo Clinic. Their youngest daughter, Laine, is coming from Omaha to be with Tom while she is gone.

Have a Swell Sunday, all.

RE:WELCOME TO APRIL CHECK IN
(Date Posted:04/15/2013 9:25 AM)

'Morning Everyone. Welcome to a brand new week.

I told you I woke up at 3 AM yesterday and couldn't get back to sleep. Well, I was even more worthless than I had thought I would be all day! Mike on the other hand, went grocery shopping and stopped at the meat market too. He is doing so much better!

Last night sleep was better, but not great. Still, I feel a whole lot better. We were supposed to get snow starting tonight, but guess what? It was snowing when we woke up, and it's still coming! It's a good thing Mike went for grocereies yesterday instead of waiting until today like he had considered.

I'm going to try two new-to-me recipes tomorrow, Crock pot BBQ Ribs that look even easier than the one I make, and Crackerbarrel Hashbrown Casserole, which also looks easy and good ~ and should last for three days. You know how I love a meal that keeps on giving. So, that's on for tomorrow. Leftovers for tonight.

smiley26
Aw, Lou Ann, I feel your pain.   I hope today is better.  How are you feeling now?

AnnnieM and Mary Ann, I hope all goes well with you, too.

My coffee mug is right here beside my hand, filled with delicious, life giving, hot coffee.
Ahhhhhh. Life is good.

RE:WELCOME TO APRIL CHECK IN
(Date Posted:04/16/2013 7:52 AM)

Welcome back to Winter.
smiley9
We got a lot of snow, and more coming today, 36 degrees with snow and rain today, 31 degrees and snow tomorrow. From my side of the bed, propped up with my lap top, I can look out the Bay Window and see what appears to be a snow drift, with sugar frosted trees beyond. Reminds me of Minnesota. In reality, it's just the snow on the rail around the deck, but since I can't see the deck from here, it looks like a snow drift.

Definitely a good day to make BBQ Ribs and Crackerbarrel Hashbrown Casserole and curl up in front of a nice fire with a good book.

Our neighbor Sharri, the one who is selling her house across the street and building just up the street, called to ask what our stone front was. She said she thought ours was the prettiest house in the development! She has said that before, but it did make me feel good to know she wasn't just being polite. It really isn't , of course. It's all a matter of personal taste, but it makes us feel good anyway. I suspect her new house will be a stunner. She has so many ideas, having lived in her house here for 5 years. While she is building the same kind of house as ours, she's making a different elevation so it will look entirely different.

Yesterday was horrid. I wondered if you were all seeing the horror unfold on the news as I watched. Of course you were ~ I'm sure we all were, and will be for the next several days. Unimaginable ~ and yet we've been here before, haven't we? My heart aches for those poor people ~ and for my poor Country. Some of the Lame Stream Media types said the most awful things. You just have to wonder how their twisted little minds work ~ if they work at all.

Watching already this mornng is just heartbreaking.

smiley9
Mary Ann, good to see you.  I'm sorry you have had so much trouble getting in to visit us.

Thank you for your prayers for Tom.  This is so hard.

Mike must have twisted his ankle when he was cleaning the garage, and it was very painful for several days.  We have found that Advil and Asprin usually work the cure for injuries like that, but this time when he took Advil in conjunction with his new Parkinson's meds, it made him dizzy.  I've searched and searched and can't find anything that says that Advil shouldn't be used with the L'dopa tpe meds, so it may have just been coincidental.   In any case, he is 'healed' now, thank goodness.

How miserable to go to all the trouble to get to the lab for your blood draw and have it 'standing room only'.   I hope you have better luck today!   It sounds like a fun day for you ~~ NOT.
I hope your leg isn't permanently damaged and left numb. That's ALL you need!  My feet are largely numb and it does dreadful things to my balance ~ serious pain in the tush.

I slept well last night ~ finally! ~ so maybe now I'm back to normal.  Lack of sleep makes me grouchy.  Oh, ok, grouchier than normal.  Ha.

Saying prayers for Boston, and for America.

RE:WELCOME TO APRIL CHECK IN
(Date Posted:04/16/2013 10:07 AM)

Hello my dear friends
Here I am to try it again. I was not here yesterday.
I was glued to the TV and the horrendous happenings at the Marathon.
Then I went out to eat with Nan, Louann and Bruce and then to Louann
and Bruce's to watch 4 episodes of Downton Abbey. They were already
on season 3, but filled me in and gave me details as we watched. Only 2
more episodes left for season 3 and both those are 2 hour ones, so they
will be watched at the next get together. We went out for Chinese, lol.
Like I have not had enough of that lately. This time I got Moo Shu Pork.
Quite good! Then a chocolate vanilla twist cone from A&W on the way to
the house. A very nice evening and it was good to get out. Talking at
dinner, Louann and Bruce were not aware of what was gone on at Boston Marathon. Both had been busy all day and not watching TV. We tuned into
a news channel after the Abbey and watched the most current updates.
So horrible. When I went home I got on my computer and saw that my
nephew Brent had posted cell phone pictures taken by various people at
the race. I swear, I wish I had never looked at them:( Some were
horrendous beyond words. It was then also that I learned that one of
the dead was an 8 year old boy. I cried. There are so many sick people
in this world and I just cannot fathom how anyone can do all these
cowardly acts of terror and violence. I just cannot comprehend it. I
know that we are a strong people, but how many times can people pick
themselves up and go on with their lives. I am maudlin, as I know the
answer to that....it is as many times as we have to.
I read all your posts...Dorothy, sorry you had to talk to yourself so
often and thanks for Monday Monday, I love the Mamas and the Papas.
Glad Mike's ankle is better and he has the energy to go out and about
and get things done. I know how debilitating getting no sleep can be. I
hope you get some good sleep soon. Hi Mary Ann, I went through a lost
post too, but it was of my own causing...my mouse stuck and I clicked on
it to move it and it was over the X to close the internet window. That is
what I get for not looking.  I was so mad at me...not Aimoo.
This is my new Spring border. I will have to make a tag to go with it.
Will have to see what I have that will do for now.
Hugs,

Happy Hump Day

The Crockpot ribs and Crackerbarrel Hashbrown Casserole turned out really good, if I do say so myself. My pathetic ability to stand 10 minutes while making them, not so good. This is getting downright embarassing. If I can't make easy recipes like these whithout whining ~ well, I'm just pathetic! I'm so annoyed.

Today is trash day, and we decided not to even take the can to the curb since there was so little trash in it. It can wait until next week.

I'm not sure how much snow we got here ~ I'd say at least 9 inches. Much of it melted quickly, depending on where it landed. The grassy areas are still covered, and the chairs on the deck are nearly buried. It looks so funny. The snow on the rail around the deck melted quickly in the Southern sun, and after they shoveled our walk and drive it dried quickly. It's snowing lightly "as we speak" though.

Lou Ann, Love your pretty border.

I think I'm glad I missed the cell phone pictures.  I've heard some of them are pretty horrific.

I haven't stayed glued to the set because there is so much repetition, but I still 'need' to watch for new developments. I think I'm feeling shell-shocked. Is this the way things are going to be from now on? We've been so lucky. Other countries live with these threats all the time.

It seems like several news media and political types want to lay blame in order to make a political statement, and whether or not the blame is placed correctly is irrelevant. I swear, that's alll some of them care about. Can't they even spare a few days to care about the suffering that people are enduring, and perhaps worry about how to prevent something like this from happening again? They really don't seem to care about anything but furthering their 'agendas'. Sickening.

RE:WELCOME TO APRIL CHECK IN
(Date Posted:04/17/2013 8:07 PM)

Hello ladies
Dorothy, I remember you telling us about the victims of the theater shooting to make it more real to us. They did that on The View today. They showed the 8 year old boy that was killed holding a poster he had made. It said something about No More Hurting People!! How sad it that? His sister lost a leg. His mom is having brain surgery.  I can only imagine what his father is going through. They were victims of the 2nd explosion.
I want whoever is responsible for this to get the death penalty.  Somewhere somehow we have to send a message. It almost makes you want to bring back hangings, firing squads and beheading's. Sick aren't I?
Also, remember I told you about the 3 little children dying in a house fire and they had detained the mother because she had left the children alone in the house? She claimed she had left a relative in charge. She had previous child services issues and she was ordered to not leave her children alone. It turns out she had to go to work and had no one to watch the kids so she left them home alone, and even worse, she locked them in an upstairs bedroom. There was not way they could escape. All 3 were found huddled together under a table or desk. I want this mother to be burned at the stake.  I am turning into a blood thirsty creature!! I do not even think WI has the death penalty...but I would change the law for her!! So much stupid and evil in the world.
I know that she never imagined that her children would die in a fire...but she went against her orders and left them alone and locked them in. That is just awful. They could not even use the bathroom.  I just want to scream.
Rain, rain, rain...that is what we are getting and rolling thunder that is magnificent.  No lightning today though, just thunder. Flooding in many areas of the state. We are getting a little bit of water in the basement, but not much. This is a very old house and there are actually troughs that run along the walls to carry water to the drain area.  Though over many years they have filled in some. Two rooms in the basement even still had dirt floors when we first moved in here. The current landlord cemented both those rooms. Mom went into the basement for the first time since her surgery because James said it was flooding every where and she wanted to see how ad first hand to see if she needed to call the landlord. It is really just the usual Spring run off at this point.  We should have known that James exaggerates, lol. She will not be going down again any time soon.
Dorothy, can you put those recipes on our recipe thread? I would love to try them if they are not too difficult. They sound wonderful.
I see that the gun bill did not make it again. This too makes me so sad. We need to have more restrictions on buying guns. If you are getting them legitimately then why should that be a problem? And no one one needs those huge assault weapons. It is ridiculous.  Yes, guns do not kill, people do, but they would not be able to if they did not have the gun.  You cannot be a sniper with a knife.
Ok, off my soapbox.  I would like to hear some good news.
Hugs,

RE:WELCOME TO APRIL CHECK IN
(Date Posted:04/18/2013 9:50 AM)

Good Morning

It snowed all day, sometimes with high winds. Not a nice day to play outside building a snowman. Mike had decided not to take the trash can out since it had very little in it. That proved to be an excellent decision. The driveway was clear in the morning when he would have taken it out, but they still hadn't picked the cans up by 5. I didn't check later to see if they had been picked up, but the driveway was definitely not good for either Mike or me to walk on.

Leftover ribs and potato casserole were even better last night than they were the night before.  (Lou Ann, I already put the recipes in our recipe group. )

We have a Grocery delivery coming between noon and 2 PM today, and I think we will just have them put everything in the garage rather than bringing it into the kitchen, and we will bring the things we want in the kitchen in ourselves. A bit more work for us, but we won't have to worry about dirty boots on the wood floor.

As if the events of Tuesday weren't bad enough, last night that terrible explosion in the Texas fertilizer plant. 70 dead and over 100 injured. Is there any Happy News out there?

In case you are interested, I'm going to share a link to a Transverse Myelitis post that was on Facebook this morning.   It is a reminder of how lucky I am than others with TM, even if I do whine when I have to stand for 10 minutes.  Imbedded in the article is a discussion about the difficulty of getting the right wheelchair, which was interesting in light of the problems annnieM has been having.

Lou Ann, I don't watch The View, but i do think it's important to make victims 'real' to us.  News stories telling about "x fatalities" or "x mutulations" are awful and we experience a moment of revulsion and then go on about our business.  When we 'meet' the real people effected, our lives are changed.    I suspect as we 'meet' more and more people, this horror will overwhellm us.

I guess we share the same 'sickness'.  Mike thinks the Death Penalty is too good for people like these and they should have life imprisonment.   I tend to think prisons provide criminals with Gold's Gym and gourmet meals and Hi Def TVs and free Wy-Fi and computers.  I tend to be an Eye for an Eye gal.  You blew people's legs off?   Ok, you've named your punishment.
(Probably if that really did become the punishment, I'd be horrified and protest to prevent it ~ but it is my initial reaction).   I have no problem with the Death Penalty at all.

That so called 'mother' ~ I can't think of a punishment bad enough for her.  How terrified those trapped babies must have been.   You would think losing her children would be the worst punishment she could experience ~ but I don't think it is.  I thnk people like her cry big crocodile tears, and then move on to the next bar or boyfriend.   It's awful when working people can't find someone to stay with their kids, but with all the social services available, I have a hard time thinking there aren't other alternatives.   I know personally of some situations where social services provided all sorts of help to a "mother", who spent any cash on her boyfriend and didn't even pick up a pre-paid prescription for her child's ear ache.  The social worker even gave her chauffeur service to and from the job she found for her.   Hard for me to get that image out of my head.

I don't own a gun and don't want one, and I do understand the arguments of the Gun Control Advocates.  I believe there are two sides to the issue, though, and sadly neither side can 'hear' the other.  When people say "You don't need an AK47 (or whatever) to hunt a deer", you know they don't understand the Second Amendment at all, and it's scary to me for them to be passing laws to change it.
I'm going to send you an email I received that might help explain the other side, at least a little bit.  You don't need to open it if you don't want to ~ I'll never know.

Hoping for a better day for our poor Country ~

Good Morning
I've been glued to the TV, as I suspect most of you have. in beween checking the online news groups.

We got an update from Carolyn last night, after she returned from her visit to the Mayo Clinic. I think I'll just share it.

Couldn't have gotten a better report! The tumor has shrunk, the
ventricles have shrunk. The path way for the fluid to circulate is
open. I don't have to return for 9 months. My neurologist was so
excited he could hardly contain himself. I have the longevity that I
had before this happened they said.

The benefit turned out with over
300 people. The omelets were fantastic!

Tom knew I was gone to Mayo and nurses were glad I was back and they said he missed me.
Laine however didn't get along so well. He didn't know her and said
he didn't want to talk to her. She was crushed. I told her if he
did that again she was to just go home! The next day was a little
better. He wasn't good today! He's dehydrated and forgets how to
drink from the straw sometimes. We are starting to feed him ice
chips. He did eat not too bad today for him. He doesn't eat much.
So that's about it other than I was glad to get home where it is
slightly warmer.

Hello. How is your weekend going?

I'm going to post tonight because tomorrow Debbie, the woman who did our Faux Painting is coming over in her "Debbie the Handy Gal" persona to hang some pictures in the Guest Suite and replace the batteries in the Smoke Detectors and a few other things for us. I'm so glad she's willing to do things like this! She has a good eye so I know she will make suggestions in addition to just putting things up for us.

I spent most of the day glued to the set again. I have to say that I'm so impressed with the people of Boston. Not only for the way they handled the tragedy, which was impressive, but when they all started singing the National Anthem at the hockey game, I had tears in my eyes. Then tonight when the monster was captured, they were cheering and waving American flags and singing patriotic songs. After so much Political Correctness and fear of offending anyone, even thug monsters, their spontaneous show of patriotism made me proud. I'll bet the PC crowd is gagging because they dare not criticize after all these people have been through. I don't hate thinking of them gaging on their anti-Americanism.

RE:WELCOME TO APRIL CHECK IN
(Date Posted:04/20/2013 8:24 PM)

Hello ladies, or should I say hello Dorothy.  N, lol.

I have issues going on.  My laptop over heats and shuts itself off.

So I need to get it in to Kermit my computer guy.  So yesterday I

started using my back up lap top which is a Dell.  For some reason

I could not get into Cuppa yesterday.  Nor earlier today.  Then I

got in but could not post.  But got everything read.  I have kept trying

and actually made it this time.  Though I cannot access Photobucket

so will have to see if I can grab a tag from older posts, lol.

I was so relieved when they captured the other bomber and am so

glad they got him alive.  I hope they can get some answers.  I had

seen some rumors that they were part of a bigger group and it was

not just the brothers...though they are the bombers.  Have you heard

anything in that regard??  I think Boston has done America Proud.

People ran to help instead of running away.  The Mayor, police, fire

fighters, paramedics, national guard and citizens all rallied to the cause.

If the whole country could work together for the good of the country

as Boston did for their city, we would once again be the greatest

country in the world.  Though I guess, I still think we are.  Just not

as great as we really could be.

Wonderful news for Carolyn, it is fantastic what they can do.  The news

for Tom is not so great.  I will continue to pray for all.  I love that you have

a Handy Gal to help you out, lol.  We need to change the batteries in our

smoke alarms too.

I cleaned the bathroom today and mopped the floor in there.  It needed it.

Mom vacuumed the living room and we both put the groceries away.  That

was the extent of our work today.   Suz and Jerry shopped for us and we had

a short list.  No one is doing our laundry this weekend as Suz is not feeling

well.   She dragged out to grocery shop as they needed stuff too, otherwise

she is laying low this weekend.    Tomorrow I will dust.  We have my nurse

friends coming Tues evening.  We will celebrate Carols birthday which was

Mar 12th, so we are late.  But with her losing her daughter and then me

getting sick we missed getting together.   I should be going to get my INR

done on Monday, but I am going to stall a bit.  Between Chinese and Corned

Beef and Cabbage...I have had broccoli and cabbage e range very day for a

week.  I hate to think what that has done to my clotting time.  So I will go a

few days and try to not eat any greens before getting it checked.  I have

been within my range for a long time and I want to go back to my 5 week

schedule.  If I could make it longer I would :)

Everyone take care....love you all.

Hugs,

Photo

Time for a cuppa with you.
Yesterday Debbie was here for about two hours and she got 7 pictures hung for us and all of the batteries in the smoke detectors changed except for the one in the 'Morning Room' up front because the cats were in there, and those in the unfinished storage areas, which Mike will do later. AND she put up some towel racks in the kitchen cabinets that we had had forever and had never put up. Can you imagine going for nearly two years without kitchen towel racks?! How I will love having them back.
It was all easy for her, but would have been much harder for us, so really good to have done. Supposedly the batteries are good to March of 2016. I need to put a reminder in several places to change them then.
As usual, watching someone else work exhausted me.

Right after Debbie got here, Carolyn called. We thought she would be putting Tom on to talk to Mike, but instead she told Mike that he was not good. She had been at the Hospice until 1:30 in the morning, and Tom's BP was very low, 70 over something. She said she would call back, so we haven't called her. We don't want to add to her stress anymore than we have to. I know she called Mike's sister, and Marianne and I emailed to discuss. We'll wait until after Mike talks to Marianne this morning to decide what to do.

May take a Down Day today. We had talked about going out to brunch, but neither of us really feels like it.

Local news: 5 Snowboarders killed in an Avalanche near Vail Pass, and they had a huge Pot Party in downtown Denver to celebrate Marijuana's Colorado legalization (even though it isn't legal Nationally), and two where shot at the rally.

Please, could we have some GOOD news?

I guess we really did with the Boston Bomber caught. I am so impressed and delighted with the citizens of Boston. They rush to offer help and wave flags and break out into song and do all of those Politically Incorrect things that must drive the Hate America crowd up the wall ~ where they belong, hanging onto spindly branches.

Rumor (?) is that the "boys" are part of a Terrorist Cell, which makes sense, so contrary to what Napolitano said 10 minutes after the bombs went off, this is likely not "contained".

I hope they keep the bomber well guarded. I suspect Cell Members would be likely to want him dead so he can't talk, and I imagine there are more than a few citizens who would like to help him on to reap his reward of 70 virgins (or whatever it is). Does anyone else think about the fact that those 70 would be much more likely to be little girls than grown women, given how early women are married off in that culture? So, are Terrorist really Pedophiles? Somehow not a surprising thought...

I guess

Lou Ann, love the yellow rose border.  We need some cheer.

I'm sorry your 'puter is sick again.  Phooey!

We obviously share the same thoughts about Boston.  I am in LOVE with those people.  America isn't dead, in spite of what our news media tries to lead me to believe.

I would love to donate to help the people so gravely injured and the families of those killed, but it's so hard to trust where money donated actually goes.  The Red Cross and other organizations have made it hard to know what to do.  I need to do some research and see if there is a local Boston organization that would not put money donated into a slush fund for possible future problems or buy a Gulf Stream for the executives of the committee administering the funds.  grrrr.

Good for you and your mom, getting your house all nice and clean.   I've been lax about keeping our house up between Marcela's visits, better this week.  It looks pretty good now and she comes on Wednesday, so if I can just keep the high dirt areas delt with, we should be ok.   If we didn't have cats . . .    Ah, but I'd prob'ly miss 'em, annoying as they are.
Debbie is just crazy about them, and particularly the Shogun.  She seems to think he's kinda pretty.  smiley70

Oh, I'll bet your numbers ARE down.  Maybe you can "forget" to go for your test for a week.

Have a good day, everyone.
