Updates from our next door neighbor ~

                                                                                   April 5, 2016

Greetings from Lome,

Well I have finally made it to the capital city of Togo, Lome.  It has been a crueling trip with two delays taking me over 22 hours but I have to say that the Lord provided His hand of protection for me all the way.  Got through customs without difficulty- Praise the Lord and hopefully everything is intact but I have not been able to check my luggage which feels lighter than when I left so we shall see.                 Trying to be sensitive to the customs of the people, I slipped into the bathroom in Paris to change into a skirt since I did not want to be labeled as a “prostitute” by wearing slacks.  To my surprise as I was boarding the plane to Lome, I noticed that there was not even one woman with a skirt or dress on!  I guess that the capital city has become modernized like the rest of the world and it is just on the outskirts that I have to wear a skirt!  I must be a sight because I did not realize that my cell phone was going to be an issue with the skirts that I had purchased since it is so heavy and without a belt, the one side of my skirt is about 4 inches lower than the other side!  The joys of trying to find clothes that are suitable for the climate but still functional.  What we women have to put up with!

I am staying at a Lucia guesthouse in the capitol tonight before I head out to the hospital tomorrow.  It should be a 3 hour trip but this I hope will be a piece of cake compared to the last three legs of the trip.

Thank you all for your prayers and support.  Without it, I know that I could not be making this trip.  But with your faithfulness I am continued to be reminded that I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.  Phil 4:13  It is on the basis of this verse that I continue to hold fast.  It is time to try and get some sleep for tomorrow will prove to be a busy day as I try to get my bearings for the challenge ahead.

                                          Standing on His promises,

                                                     Barb

Hi everyone,

Could you please pray for a 3 month old boy named, Oumarou?  His parents are cousins and he is in septic shock from dead left colon (large bowel) and a small area of  dead terminal ileum (small intestine). We don't know why he  had the dead bowels but it appears that the vessels clotted cutting off the blood supply.  Thanks.  Barb

Sorry I did not get back to you all earlier but I am on call again and it has been busy.  Little Oumarou is doing well by the grace of God.  He was actually opening his eyes this morning and looking like he was interested in the world around him.  Despite the hypotension during surgery, he made it through the damage control surgery and through the night so we are going to take him back to surgery again tomorrow to see if there is any more dead bowel and to hopefully put his small bowels back together again.  He will still have a colostomy but one stoma is better than two.  So please keep us in your prayers tomorrow.

I also saw an 60 year old man named Essotinam who is a Christian in the clinic today with an unresectable 10 cm liver mass.  I had to deliver this devastating news to him today and we prayed that God would cure him if it be His will.  He also has a history of congestive heart failure.  We are going to hook him up with the chaplain here at the hospital but I told him that I would have all of you pray for him since I knew that I would be sending you an email about Oumarou tonight.  Pray that he would continue to trust the Lord no matter what the outcome.

Got to get some sleep.  More this weekend...Lord willing.  Thanks so much for being on my team of prayer warriors.  It means so much to me and my patients. Your intercession make a difference.   Bon nuit.   Barb

Thanks so much for the updates Dorothy.  I enjoy reading her notes and I

pray for those she asks prayers for and I pray for her.  She is such a noble

woman.  I respect her for her courage, bravery and faith.  I think she is too

hard on herself when she thinks she needs to think less of herself.  To me

she is so selfless.  Do you respond to her?  If you do, please tell her I am

praying for her and for her fellow workers and for all their patients.

XOXOXO

Lou Ann

Anesthesia Machine

This is just a quick note.  Yesterday the anesthesia machine would not regulate oxygen so that it could be used to maintain patients under general anesthesia.  Needless to say, I was less than pleased.  I have to confess that my attitude was less than Christlike especially in my heart for a leader of a group let alone personally!  Likewise the anesthesia machine broke down last year when I was here and also earlier this year.  If we can not get the machine working again, we will have to cancel the majority of the cases since we have a lot of surgery on children and a few gallbladders that can not be done under spinal anesthesia.  The problem is that the machine is over 50 years old and they can no longer get parts to fix the machine.  In fact the ventilator on the machine has been broken for years so that the anesthesiologist has to bag the patient the entire time that the patient is asleep.  Likewise the monitor for carbon dioxide is not working and one would never use this machine in the states without these safety factors.  Would you please pray that we can get this machine fixed today via servicemen that will be arriving from Guatemala City this morning and that ultimately somehow God would put it in the hearts of those of AMG (Advancing the Ministry of the Gospel) the importance of raising funds for and purchasing a new anesthesia machine so that we can deliver health care to this people who deserve the same quality of care that we have in the United States.  The survival of this hospital that they are building depends on the fact that they can deliver surgery adequately since surgery brings in money.  To construct a shell without the equipment to make it function appropriately is going to be futile and is setting this hospital up for failure.

When we had to cancel surgery yesterday, my team went out to the mountains with another team here that is delivering water filters to different places.  They stated that they had to walk over 2 hours to some of these places going up terrain in their walk as much as 3000 feet and more in elevation.  They arrived at the same pueblo as the child that has the burn contracture we were going to do today but of course the mother with her two children had walked down the mountain to come to the city for surgery.  It broke my heart that we had to tell them that the surgery is temporarily cancelled because the machine is not working. This mother had to turn around and walk that same trek up the mountain again.  Seeing how weary the group was, I can't imagine what it would be like with two little ones in hand doing it once let alone twice in one day.  This is really damaging to the reputation of this hospital and he organization, let alone the Lord when we can not deliver what we promise.  Thanks for your part in supporting us here in Guatemala.  I just could not help but share the bad with the good news of the struggles that we are encountering here this week after asking God to forgive my poor attitude and give me His strength to lead the group that He has given me appropriately this year.  Yours in Christ,   Barb
