My neighbor, Dr Barbara Okamoto is in Guatemala as we speak.   This will just be a short trip ~ between her knee replacement surgeries.   I know she would appreciate your prayers.

Hi all,

The date of departure has finally arrived and I regret to inform you that my papers have not.  Actually several days ago I felt and realized that my license would not be ready.  It’s as though the only thing that was going to get me through customs was that license but that is not true, although it helped me the last two years.  I just felt the Lord nudging me and asking, “Are you trusting that license to get you through customs or are you trusting Me?”  Of course, I said “You Lord but….”  When you are talking to the Lord there are no “buts.”   As last year ended with my malaria and then with my knee replacement delayed, it seems that my schedule is not my own and yet once again the Lord is saying to me, “Do you trust me?  Do you trust that I hold your future in My hands? “  Guess I am still learning because this appears to be a recurring theme for me this year with so many unknowns.  Even though I can’t see into the future, I do know who holds the future.  I do praise the Lord that my dentist friend did get her license and I believe that the others will get their licenses before they leave next Friday.  So as I leave for Guatemala today, I would really appreciate your prayers that I will be able to get through customs without being stopped.  It is not my norm but God is capable of anything!

I won’t get to the AMG house in Guatemala City until late this evening and I don’t know if I will be able to get an email out since I am not sure what their internet capability is so it may not be until Monday when I can get another email out.  Thanks for being on my team of prayer warriors!

I forgot to state earlier, if you want to be removed from my mission list just let me know.  I get a number of emails and I know how annoying it can be when there are just too many.  Also if you get dropped from the list and don’t hear from me for awhile just drop me a note.  Somehow I seem to lose things in the Google cloud or whatever and mysteriously names just drop off and disappear sort of like that sock I lost last week that I still have not been able to locate!  Blessings.   Barb

Then on the morning of the 12th ~~ 😃

Just a quick note since it is almost midnight and I have to leave tomorrow around 7:30 AM.  The whole system at the airport has changed.  It is a random choosing of who gets searched in customs now.  If you get a red light, then you have to put your luggage through the xray machine and get searched by customs.  If you get a green light you just walk out of the airport.  Guess who just walked out of the airport?  God is so good.  "He will give His angels charge concerning you to guard you in all your ways.... "  Remember that God just delights in answering our prayers.  Leaving for Cubulco tomorrow morning.  Thanks for all your prayers.  🤗

May 14, 2017

Feliz día de la madre! Happy Mother’s Day. We are entering the rainy season here in Cubulco and hot and humid is a far cry from the weather in Denver but it is the norm here. It has been a wild time of unpacking all of the surgical equipment and drugs that I had brought with everything strewn over a double bed in my room. Then came the unpacking of the things that I left behind since 2 pairs of underwear do not get you every far in this hot weather! Of course my clothes that were left behind look like I slept in them for a year and I just can’t get myself to use an iron today so I guess they will have to wait. After getting somewhat unpacked, I managed to get into bed yesterday after stringing up my mosquito netting over my bed at midnight but as is the norm, in the early morning hours, I was awaken by the bombas- bombs or dynamite that is fired off by various people to send prayers up to God in the city and the gallos- roosters singing that it is time to wake up at 2 AM in the morning. Darn, I forgot to put in those ear plugs that I brought and yet I didn’t want to get out of bed. Oh well, another night seemed to drift away as I tried to settle down and get some sleep without great success.

In the morning, I was treated with my favorite breakfast- frijoles (beans), queso- cheese, papaya that melts in your mouth, and platinos fritos- fried plantains that were carmelized because they are so sweet! It was a banquet from heaven to me. The church service was definitely focused on mothers but I just could not understand the sermon very well because of the speed in which Pastor Fabian spoke. It was a lovely walk back to the hospital though as I was re-orienting myself to the surroundings.

After church, we went out to lunch at my favorite local restaurant for a mother’s day celebration. It is always fun to spend the time with my Guatemalan family and my great dentist friend Dr. Pearl Burns. Then the fun began with sorting and lubricating all my surgical instruments for 9 minor surgery sets, 3 hernia sets, and 3 laparotomy sets. I did not manage to get them all done but I figured that I had a running start. I had to tell you that I did something or else you would think that all I did was eat from the pictures. Anyway the internet went down and I did not get to finish or send this letter so while it is still up, I am going to send it out. I truly thank you all for your support and prayers. I promise I won’t bug you with too many emails but I thought that I would at least try to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day, now belated! Barb

I have a new update, but as with the previous ones, I can't post it with the pictures.   This is due to my new email program which absolutely sucks ~ I thought Live Mail was bad, but Outlook is so much worse.    Barb sends her updates on a .pdf, and our Aimoo won't accept and insert .pdfs.   In the past, I have saved them to my hard drive, opened them and then copied and pasted.

Now, as you can see from the first posts ~ the pictures don't copy.  I even tried copy and pasting to my Word file, thinking I could copy and paste from there to here, but still no pictures.   The only way I could get them would be to save them to my hard drive and insert them.   I'll keep trying to figure out a better way, but I'm frustrated.   Why does nothing ever change for the better?
