Now that you've been warned . . .

It's Summertime in Colorado ~ for today, anyway. 70s again today!

Yesterday I got the blood tests done, now I await results. It went ok, BUT the Lab no longer allows the phlobobomists to use the Butterfly needls to take blood from your butterfly veins. Almost all the time I was having blood drawn monthly at the Lab, they used those teeny tiny meedles in the only vein I have in my entire body, which happens to be a butterfly vein on my left arm. smiley57 Even then they often had trouble. Now they have to use a 'normal' needle which looks like an ice pick to me! Fortunately she was good so it only took two sticks in my now much smaller non-butterfly veins. Of course the first one, when she couldn't get any blood, she did that roto-rooter number where they sort of plough around trying to find blood. Why, when they didn't get it from the vein they think they can find it by just groping around, I don't know. Anyway, as I say, now I await the results.

I borrowed their office and did my finger stick test while I was there, and it was a perfect 2.4. I hope (and pray) the Lab's numbers are the same, or close.

Today will be Mike's third day on two of his new pills a day, and then tomorrow he is on the full dosage. I keep asking if he sees a difference, and he says he thinks he does, but he's a Glass Half Full kinda guy. I don't notice any improvement from the outside looking in. He did have a dizzy and slightly nauseous spell yesterday afternoon. Didn't last long and there is no way to know if it was from the new pills or not, yet. That isn't listed as one of the possible side effects. While his Dr and our friend Faye in the other group who also has Parkinson's said he should see a big difference right away, from what I've read it may not be that quickly. When he went on Mirapex several years ago, the results were almost instant, so I was hopeful this might be the same. As long as he gets better and stays healthy, we'll take it however we can get it.

GrannieM, how lovely that little Henry is beginning to talk and that he talked to YOU!   It's been so long since I've held a baby, but I can well imagine what a joy he is!

Lou Ann, Hooray!  You got the bathroom done!  Believe me when I say I know that is no small task.   I think you'd be smart to start on your bedroom, just a little at a time so you don't have to kill yourself if you get notification that someone is coming to see it.    (If you'd like to remind me about our basement . . . . LOL)

Thank you so much for the prayers.  At least I know my Finger Stick number was good.  Now if the Labs numbers only match or come close ~ and if the rest of the blood test was good, I'll be a happy camper ~ at least until my appointment with my Cardiologist on the 26th.  Ha.

I'm so glad you've found a new book series that you clearly love.  Nothing better than losing yourself in a good book ~ or two.    I enjoy mysteries set in Amish country too.  I need to see if any of the ones I have in my Kindle can be loaned.  It's really infuriating to me that I can't loan all the books that I have bought and paid for.   With my old hardbacks, I had a rule that I would loan the first one, but not any of the others so I could both share my favorite reads and still support the authors.  Now with the publishers getting so greedy, it's just irritating.

I just finished the last two Lorna Barrett books in her Booktown series.  Definitely light reading, but fun.  Now I think I'll start the fourth Gamache (Louise Penny).

Yes, you did tell us you got a new TV.  I clung to my antique TV almost forever because I really liked it and then FINALLY gave it up for a newer model.  Now I can't imagine going back to it.  lol.  How kewl that you can even read the guide!

RE:MARCH Check In
(Date Posted:03/16/2013 8:11 AM)

Hello.

I got my blood test results yesterday morning ~ I do love going to the Lab directly instead of having to wait for the Dr. to get them and then get around to calling me. Instant Gratification.smiley57 There were a few little things amiss that can be explained, but almost everything (sugar levels, cholosterol, kidney & liver function, etc, etc, etc) were all well within range. Thank you so much for your prayers!

I didn't hear from my Cardiologist's office, which could mean that (1) they didn't get the results from the Lab, or (2) they were in range and the person who got them thought they didn't need to call me about them[*] or (3) they didn't have time to call yesterday and will call on Monday.
[* Since I call in my Finger Stick results I've told them that if they are "good" they don't need to call me to tell me what the results are. They only call if they are not good and we may need to adjust my meds]

They do call me with Lab results when I have blood drawn there, good or bad since I have no other way to know what they are. I hope and pray they got the results ~ and that they match my finger stick results ~ or I might end up needing more Lab Blood Tests ~~ with that Ice Pick needle!

Mike made our Corned Beef and Cabbage. He took that over from me years ago. The boiled dinner was delicious, the meat fork tender and so was everything else (carrots, cabbage, potato). He makes it with a good bit of Guiness Stout instead of water. It was seriously yummy.
I will make Irish Stew tomorrow and we'll have that for a couple of days at least, then we can have corned beef sandwiches or Ruebens for a day or so.  Life is good.

He will start on his full regimen of pills today.

Annual St Paddy's Day Parade this morning in Denver. Are we going?
Bwahahaaa ~ Did you seriously ask that??

It was 77 degrees here yesterday! Actually hd the AC on for a while last night, then overnight we left the heat off and it was 70 in the house when we woke up! We're supposed to see a 20 degree drop today.

Happy St Paddy's Day!

Hi Lou Ann.  Congratulations on getting the bathroom done!  I hope that you get some help with your bedroom.  I remember you saying something about a new TV.  I'm glad it's working out good!  I am tickled pink that he was happy to see me and he cooed rather than cried.  I was getting frustrated being the only person he didn't like.

Hi Dorothy.  More congratulations are in order.  Congratulations on getting your blood work done without the the too much pain.  Great numbers!  We had a day of summer yesterday…  I had windows open and we sat on the deck for awhile, Katie and I.  It was heaven!  Of course, today is downright chilly.  I'm sure we have some more winter to get through.  Dagnabit.  All of your Irish cooking sounds so good!  Enjoy!

Zarah and Jeff and little Henry are in Casper.  The symphony is playing for a ballet tonight (swan lake).  We did not go because my chair hurts too much.  Dagnabit.  I can't wait for my new chair!!  We have been talking about Easter dinner around here and it has been determined that we will have ham and potato salad and other assorted goodies.  I am just beyond excited to dye Easter eggs!  I'm pretty much a kid at heart!

RE:MARCH Check In
(Date Posted:03/16/2013 8:20 PM)

Norwegians, Irish, Lutefisk & Lefse explained

The reason the Irish celebrate St. Patrick's Day is because this is when St.Patrick drove the Norwegians out of Ireland.

It seems that some centuries ago, many Norwegians came to Ireland to escape the bitterness of the Norwegian winter. Ireland was having a famine at the time, and food was scarce. The Norwegians were eating almost all the fish caught in the area, leaving the Irish with nothing to eat but potatoes. St. Patrick, taking matters into his own hands, as most Irishmen do, decided the Norwegians had to go.

Secretly, he organized the Irish IRATRION (Irish Republican Army to Rid Ireland of Norwegians). Irish members of IRATRION passed a law in Ireland that prohibited merchants from selling ice boxes or ice to the Norwegians, in hopes that their fish would spoil. This would force the Norwegians to flee to a colder climate where their fish would keep.

Well, the fish spoiled, all right, but the Norwegians, as every one knows today, thrive on spoiled fish. So, faced with failure, the desperate Irishmen sneaked into the Norwegian fish storage caves in the dead of night and sprinkled the rotten fish with lye, hoping to poison the Norwegian invaders.

But, as everyone knows, the Norwegians thought this only added to the flavor of the fish, and they liked it so much they decided to call it "lutefisk", which is Norwegian for "luscious fish".

Matters became even worse for the Irishmen when the Norwegians started taking over the Irish potato crop and making something called "lefse".

Poor St. Patrick was at his wit's end, and finally on March 17th, he blew his top and told all the Norwegians to "GO TO HELL". So they all got in their boats and emigrated to The Dakotas and Minnesota -- the only other paradise on earth where smelly fish, old potatoes and plenty of cold weather can be found in abundance.

Sure and that's the way it was, and why we celebrate St Patrick's Day today.

Top o' the Morning ~ and the Bottom o' the Fifth to Ye!

Yesterday was a lovely, low key day at the O'Butcher house. In the afternoon we watched "Angels and Demons" in keeping with the election of Pope Francis. Fortunately in the real election there were no grisly murders or plots by the Ilumanati, but it was fun to see some of the locations and behind the scenes activities during a Papal election having just seen that 'for real'.

Then after a nice Corned Beef and Cabbage dinner we watched The Quiet Man. It's Tradition, and it never gets old.

This afternoon I will make Irish Stew. No other exciting plans for us. While we used to do St Pat's Day up right, it's pretty tame in O'Butcher Land these days.

Mike's brother Tom is now in a Nursing Home, hopefully only for the short time and not forever. He's only 59, but he isn't doing well. The Doctors don't seem to be able to figure out what is wrong or to help him. It makes a person crazy. Are they incompetent both in Guthrie Center and Des Moines, or do they just not care or is he just too complicated to figure out? Non stop emails and phone calls (and text messages for the rest of the family), but no real satisfaction. Lots of other family 'issues' but I won't bring those into my St Pat's greeting.

On another 'aside', my arm where they took blood is actually sore three days later!. Nothing bad, just achy. I will never understand why they don't accept defeat and try for another vein instead of going digging once they don't get blood.

Ah, but 'tis St Paddy's Day and not a time for complainin'
CELEBRATE!

smiley5
annnieM, how fun to have a day with Katie.  You haven't mentioned having her for a while.  What about the other dog (I can't remember the name of the 'pup')?   Does she stay with you too while Zarah and Jeff and Henry are gone?

I love the music of Swan Lake.  I'm sorry you couldn't go.  I hope that long overdue Wheelchair comes soon.  Have you heard anything about when you might expect it?   I find it sooo frustrating to wait for others to do their jobs and have no control.   (I do frustrate easily.  smiley50)

Ham and potato salad sounds like a great Easter dinner.  Omaha Steaks has another sale going and when you but $39 worth of sale merchandise (I think that's the number), you get a two pound ham, so I think that's what we'll be doing too.  Hadn't thought of potato salad ~ Mike would love that.

smiley5
Lou Ann, CONGRATULATIONS!  That's awesome!
Well done!!!

Did you get your boiled dinner?   How are you celebrating?

smiley5
I leave you all with a Time Honored Irish Blessing ~

                            Happy St. Patrick's Day
No Corned Beef and Cabbage here.  There was none left in the store and my sister was supposed to check others for us. Either she did not check or did not find any.  She did however bring me potato pancakes and bacon.  Mom and I are watching The Quite Man now, so, with potato pancakes and the Quiet Man I am happy with my day!
Dorothy, I am so sorry that things are not improving for your brother in law.  Can no one convince them to get a 2nd opinion or head to Mayo for a consult?  It is so frustrating when you are so far apart.
I hope that my blood test tomorrow goes well.  Louann is picking me up at 9:55am.  I have to go.  Missing too much of my movie being on here.
Hugs,

Good Morning!

Another sunny day yesterday, but the winds were terrible. I haven't heard how bad that was for the fires around Fort Collins, but your heart goes out to the people in it's path and the fire fighters.

Irish Stew turned out rather delicious, if I do say so myself (and I do ). We put on some Irish music (I do love Irish Music, don't you?) and shared a glass of Guinness before dinner. That was about the extent of our celebrating.

smiley3
Lou Ann I'm sorry you didn't get the Corned Beef and Cabbage, but Potato Pancakes and Bacon sound good and you can't go wrong with a viewing of The Quiet Man.

Believe me, we've tried to talk Tom into going to the Mayo Clinic.  They did amazing things for Carolyn, and we (Mike and his sister and brother-in-law, one of our mutual friends and I) firmly believe he hasn't been correctly diagnosed.  Actually, it seems to me that he hasn't been diagnosed at all.   He doesn't want to hear what we have to say and Carolyn doesn't seem to be encouraging him in this direction either.
smiley103
Good luck with your test.

Have a Hoppy ~ er, uh, Happy Day, All.

It was a nice weekend because we had Katie but I was miserable when I thought about the symphony and my grandson.  It hurts that my sister is able to watch him and I am not.  On the other hand, I'm glad my sister is available.  The other dog is in Texas with his trainer.  We went to my folks apartment and play cards.  That was our saint patrick's day.  Of course I'm not Irish.

Hi Lou Ann!  Congratulations on completing your hundredth lesson!  Best of luck with your blood test.  Glad you got some potato pancakes!

Hi Dorothy!  I will hope that your brother in law improves and gets out of the nursing home soon.  It's too bad he won't listen to you.

Wishing everyone a wonderful week!

Hello. Hello!

It's still supposed to be in the 50s today, almost Spring like. We don't have any particular plans. Isn't that nice?

Mike has an appointment with his Neurologist tomorrow morning. Today is Day 4 on the full dosage of his new meds. While I don't see a difference in his walk, he clearly has more energy and seems to feel better, and that's huge. He did a LOT today, while his "bride" did very little. The tremor in his right hand is definitely less too, although that isn't such a big deal because it's relatively minor normally. Still, another indication that something is happening.

The situationn with Tom sounds much worse than I had originally thought. I've spent the day exchanging emails with a dear friend of his and with our niece, while others have been on the phone. The more I learn the worse it sounds. There are so many other factors at play, much too much to go into. Perhaps you could keep him in your prayers?

smiley8
annnieM, Sure and Everyone is Irish on St Paddy's Day!  Ha.

I can imagine how hard it must have been to think of Zarah and Jeff and Henry enjoying the concert without you.   Have you heard anymore about when you'll get your new wheelchair?

I had been wondering about the other dog.  I haven't heard you mention her (?) very much.   Lovely that you could have Katie with you.

smiley8
Lou Ann, I saw your post on Facebook about how sick you are.   I hope this passes quickly and you are soon feeling fine!

Hi Dorothy!  I can't believe you're happy you don't have plans because most of your plans are wonderful!  Going out to eat at one lovely place or another.  I'm so glad Mike is feeling better.  I hope his appointment goes well.  It definitely sounds like he's doing better.  This heathen said a prayer for your brother in law.  I'm such a small petty person that it broke my heart that my sister got to have my grandson for three days, and I will never be able to baby sit him.  When Jamie comes today we will call the wheelchair people.  She had said she would call us back and she did not.  Oh no, Lou Ann is sick.  I hope she gets better soon.

Wishing everyone a terrific Tuesday!  Hugs,

Welcome to Spring!

It's still Spring like here, but we're expecting snow on Saturday.
My friend Judy just emailed that Omaha is going to see blizzard conditions for the next 5 days, and that it's 18 degrees with a 2 degree Wind Chill.
smiley99Happy Spring!

I called the Cardiologist's office yesterday morning to find out whether or not the Lab INR test matched my finger stick test. Nurse apologized for not calling me, then told me that the results of both tests were exactly the same. She said she'd never seen that happen before! I did do my finger stick in the Lab, borrowing an unoccupied office, so the two tests were done at about the same time, but I'm attributing it at least partially to the power of paryer. Thank you all again.

Did some laundry, balanced the checkbook, but not a lot more.  Last night Mike made reubens with the left over corned beef. They were heavenly. Think we'll do the same again today!

Today Mike has an appointment with his Neurologist. I hope he asks lots of questions. I go with him, but I stay in the outer office now.

smiley1
annnieM, I really appreciate your prayers for Tom.   The situation does not look good.    I'm rather in a state of shock, and praying that things will turn around.

There is nothing petty about feeling bad that your sister took care of Henry because you couldn't.   It breaks my heart that you can't care for him physically.  He WILL grow up knowing your love even though you can't "do" for him, and he will be one lucky little boy, because you have so much love to give.

I'd like to call those Wheelchair people ~~ but I'm afraid WHAT I'd call them might not motivate them to hurry.  smiley70  They have to know how important this is, and I think it's shameful that they don't care enough to make something happen.   It's a privledge to have a job where you can actually help people in ways that matter.  How sad for them that they don't 'get' it, and know how good they could feel at the end of the day.

smiley1
Lou Ann ~ I hope you're feeling better!  Sending good thoughts and healing prayers.

smiley1
Mary Ann ~ Where the heck are you?!

Happy Happy Spring, Everyone!

RE:MARCH Check In
(Date Posted:03/20/2013 10:03 PM)

I'm posting tonight because I think tomorrow is going to be a very busy day. I have a haircut in the morning, and then we have some errands. Sarah (builder's wife) called and asked if we'd show our house to a prospective client, and we agreed. We'll show it tomorrow at 3, which means after we come home we have to be sure everything is as clean as we can make it and try to figure out what to do with the cats.

I had thought all the lots except the Model had been sold, but one sale must have fallen through. The house up the street from us has been framed already, and the newest house has had the basement dug and forms put up so the basement can be poured. They're really moving fast! Soooo, it now appears that there is one lot left, and that could be sold to the people we will show the house to if they like our house and decide they want to build our model there.

Today (Wednesday) Mike had his appointment with his Neurologist. He'd only been on a full dosage of the new meds for three days, but his Dr still increased the dosage. He seemed to feel Mike was doing well, but Mike said he had hoped he would see a greater improvement. Big Mouth! So Dr sent an order to Medco for the new dosage. Mike will keep on with the current dosage until the new pills come. Hopefully this really will make a good difference for him ~~ and also hopefully, it won't cause the dyskenesia this medicine often causes after several years.

Mike was able to visit with Tom tonight for a short while, and I'm still in the exchanging multiple emails with his good friend and our niece.    I'm really knackered tonight.

Happy Spring.

Well I'm still alive after another trip to the dentist.  Many years ago I let this dentist talk me into a hemi something or another.  He saved half of my tooth.  I'm sure I paid him money for that procedure and yesterday I got to pay another couple $100 for him to pull what was left.  In other words, I was an idiot and paid twice for the same tooth.  Because it was only half there, I think it was more difficult to pull, so he did some slicing and dicing.  I have two stitches.  Dagnabit.  That means I have to go back to get them out.  Good news is that it doesn't hurt.

Hi Dorothy!  Jamie has been very forceful when she calls the wheelchair people.  Problem is, no one ever available to answer the phone.  She doesn't leave just one message though…she leaves several.  Zarah came yesterday and we spent lots of time playing with Henry.  It is good that she wants me to get time with him.  Best of luck to Mike with his appointment.  I hope you get a good haircut!

Hi Lou Ann!  I sure hope you are feeling better.

Hi Mary Ann!  Hello to the rest of the cuppa gals.

Hugs,

Nothing much happening in my little corner of the world.  Tomorrow morning we go baby sit little Henry for a few hours and then Dave leaves to go away for a couple days to a spiritual meeting.  My mom is going to stay overnight Saturday night and Jamie is coming on Sunday.

Oh, I guess there is something really exciting.  My wheelchair is almost done and I go try it out on Wednesday next week.  They still did not have the cushion yesterday when they called but expect it by Monday.  I may just have my wheelchair for Easter!

Happy Easter everyone!
