JULY

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S ALREADY YOU, JULY,
HALF THE YEAR HAS NOW PASSED ME BY.
A MOMENT AGO IT WAS NEW YEAR'S DAY
WITH FRESH RESOLUTIONS TO PAVE MY WAY.

MY CHAGRIN IS RESCUED BY WONDROUS JULY
AS GORGEOUS FIREWORKS LIGHT UP THE SKY.
THIS FREEDOM THAT I ASSUME IS OWED
WAS PURCHASED BY MANY A BLOODY ROAD.

THOUGH AIR IS SULTRY AND MOSQUITO'S BOLD,
I PREFER YOU, JULY TO THE WINTER COLD.

Two crabby English speaking guys came this afternoon and finished our retaining wall.  I'm sure they didn't want to be there, and I'm sure it wasn't our fault that they were.  Anyway, while it isn't quite what I had hoped for, it is finished ~ PTL!   At least the actual retaining wall is ~ they didn't put in the retaining wall around the Air Conditioner or plant the Mock Orange, AND they may have to replace the lilacs.   One of the HOA Landscape Committee guys, who used to be a landscaper said that if we watered them diligently, they should come back.  They are just in shock.   I hope he's right.   One of them looks like it might make it, and the other two look pretty bad.  I'll keep pouring water on them, and since they got the drip line hooked up ~ finally ~ we can not only water the lawn but water the lilacs, too. when I'm not outside with my hose.    The potted plants are looking pretty puny, too, though I did manage to get them watered during this ordeal.   I guess we'll just have to see what happens.  They also left the driveway really dirty, but I don't know if we can pitch a fit about that or not.  We're both about "pitched out".  Ha.
Mike is going to call Matt tomorrow morning and see what's going on.

Made meatloaf and little Dutch Baby potatoes for dinner, so dinner is made for Monday night and Wednesday night, too.   On Tuesday, Mike has his annual physical, and he asks for your prayers.   He has a lot of faith in your prayers!    We'll probably go out for lunch or dinner after his appointment.  Then Marcela comes on Wednesday and Thursday is the 4th.  Busy, busy.

Lou Ann, you have outdone yourself on the new July skin and the July Sign In Thread!  Awesome!  Thank you so much!   Everything is just beautiful.

THANKS DOROTHY, I THINK I  AM GETTING THE HANG OF IT WITH THE SKIN

AND ALL.  DID NOT DO TOO BAD CONSIDERING I SUDDENLY REMEMBERED

THAT I NEEDED TO DO IT LAST NIGHT AROUND NOON YESTERDAY.  HAD TO

MAKE PAGE AND GROUP HEADERS, BORDER, GATHER ALL INFO AND

PICTURES AND RESIZE THEM.  THEN PUT IT ALL TOGETHER IN HERE.  I MADE

IT AND HAD IT UP AND RUNNING BEFORE MIDNIGHT.  MOM HELPED AGAIN

BY READING TO ME AS I TYPED...THAT SAVES ME SO MUCH TIME.  I WAS

HAVING A HORRID TIME WITH SPACING ON THE PAGE.  SEVERAL TIMES

MY FONT AND COLOR CHANGED.  HALFWAY THROUGH THE SPACING

CHANGED AND THE ROWS WERE OVERLAPPING EACH OTHER, SO I HAD

TO DOUBLE SPACE TO PREVENT THAT.  NO CLUE WHY... I WAS SO

FRUSTRATED BY IT.

WE HAVE HAD 2 DAYS OF BEAUTIFUL WEATHER.  70'S AND LOW HUMIDITY.

I AM LOVING IT.  WENT AND HAD MY BLOOD DRAWN THIS MORNING BUT

HAVE NOT HEARD FROM THE CLINIC HOW IT WAS. HOPING IT WAS GOOD

SO CAN WAIT 4 WEEKS FOR THE NEXT TIME.

AHHH DOROTHY....DO THE WORRIED NEVER END?  YOU NEED TO WASH

YOUR HANDS OF IT ALL AND TELL MIKE IT IS ALL HIS PROBLEM NOW.

LET HIM SORT IT ALL OUT AND MAKE ALL THE ARRANGEMENTS.  I HAVE

SAID A PRAYER FOR MIKE'S HEALTH RESULTS AT DR. OFFICE AND FOR

YOUR LILACS AND PLANTERS.  ALL WILL BE WELL.  JEEPERS....WHAT IS

UP WITH THIS NOW?  I WANTED TO ADD A SMILEY AND ALL I COULD GET

WAS 2 ROWS OF THEM AND NOTHING I COULD USE, LOL.  AIMOO IS

HATING ME :(

HAVE A GOOD REWARD MEAL OUT FOR MIKE'S APPT.  MAKE SURE TO

COME BACK AND TELL US WHAT YOU BOTH HAD SO I CAN SALIVATE

ALL OVER MY SCREEN :)

GRANNNIEM, SORRY THAT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ATTEND THE

MT RUSHMORE CONCERT....BUT WHAT COULD BE BETTER THAN MORE

HENRY TIME???  I THINK YOU JUST HAVE TO ENJOY DAVE'S CONCERTS

FOR WHAT THEY ARE AND ON A DIFFERENT LEVEL.  ALL MUSIC, WHETHER

PLAYED BY EXPERTS OR NOVICES, OR JUST FOR FUN IS WONDERFUL TO

LISTEN TO.  I MISS GOING TO CONCERTS.  WE USED TO HAVE FREE ONES

ONCE A WEEK WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER AT THE TAYLOR PARK OUTDOOR

STAGE....I DO NOT EVEN THING IT IS THERE ANYMORE.  NOW THEY HAVE

THEM AT BUTTERMILK PARK BUT YOU HAVE TO PARK BLOCKS AWAY AND

WALK IN AND THAT IS JUST OUT OF THE QUESTION FOR MOM AND I NOW.

MOMS LEGS ARE STILL WEEPING.  I AM KEEPING THEM BANDAGED AND

WRAPPED TIGHTLY.  I HOPE THEY STOP THIS SOON/  WELL, I THINK I AM

MAKING SUPPER TONIGHT SO I HAD BETTER GET ON THAT.  MOM MADE

A BEAUTIFUL BEEF ROAST WITH CARROTS AND POTATOES YESTERDAY

AND WE HAVE 4 MORE MEALS IN THE FREEZER FOR US AS IT WAS A BIG

ROAST.  IT PRACTICALLY MELTED IN YOUR MOUTH....YUMMMMMM.

WAVING TO ALL.  HOPING MARY ANN IS OK.

HUGS,

And almost as quickly check out.   Mike has his annual physical this morning and we'll do some running around afterwards ~ lunch, pick up his new glasses, etc.

I can't even find words about the loss of the 19 Hot Shots and the fires raging on.   As I've told you, we looked (two or three times) in Prescott some years ago.  We had a wonderful Realtor Couple we were working with, and we went to a charming fair as well as staying in a couple of lovely Inns and dining there.  Charming place.   I'm not familiar with Yarnell, but the whole thing breaks my heart.
I've read a couple of mysteries that were written after similar losses (the fire near Glenwood Canyon where 14 Hot Shots were killed, the one on Storm King Mountain).  The writing described the fires so vividly I can still "see" what they experienced.  It changed my reaction to the words "Forrest Fire" forever.
Judith Van Gieson posted on Facebook yesterday, and I'd like to share what she wrote with you, in case you don't see it.

  • The death of the hotshots fighting the Yarnell Hill Fire in AZ is devastating. The way in which they died is very similar to the way 14 hotshots died in the South Canyon fire near Glenwood Springs, CO, trapped in a canyon when the weather changed and the wind picked up exacerbating the fire. That fire inspired me to write Hotshots. A couple of months after the South Canyon fire I hiked into the canyon where the hotshots died and felt I could feel their spirits. The other hotshots had left a memorial on the side of the canyon, made of rocks in the shape of a firefighter running. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the brave young men and women who fight these fires.
  • There were several other responses, then this exchange ~.

  • Dorothy Johnston Butcher I was so profoundly impacted by your description of the fire in Hotshots ~ before I read it, I don't think I could have really imagined what it must have been like. Now that description comes vividly to mind as I read about the horrific loss of this Hotshot Team. It overwhelms me. God bless them, and be with their families and close friends.

  • Judith Van Gieson Thank you, Dorothy. What made that possible for me was all the research I did, all the hotshots I talked to, many of whom were Native American as so many hotshots are, and then hiking into the South Canyon and seeing the incredible memorial there. Looking back now I can see it was one of the most powerful experiences I've had in this lifetime.

  • Jan Jones It was SO sad to hear of this loss. I, like Dorothy, was impacted by Hotshots. When I first hear about this, about 30minutes ago, I realized that I had a context to understand the tragedy because of your book. It is SUCH a dangerous job. Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and friends of these brave firefighters. RIP

The other book that so vividly described the fires was written by Nevada Barr.  They both left me feeling I had lived through the awful experience myself.

For the first time ever, we haven't been watching Wimbledon.
I'm not Serena's biggest fan, but I was shocked when I heard she was out.   I really don't know any of the others who are still standing, but I hate that I have no Americans to cheer for.    Are you watching?

Lou Ann, fingers crossed for your good blood test.  Mike is coming up on Friday.  Didn't I just do it yesterday?!   I love being able to do it myself at home, but Phillips makes me do it every two weeks even though my Dr would be happy with monthly if nothing were amiss.  It just seems like I'm always poking myself!  Not really complaining ~ taking my crappy veins to the Lab was SUCH a pain.

Oooh, four more lovely roast beef meals awaiting.  What could be nicer?  What did you fix last night?

I have passed on to Mike that you are praying for him, and he said "Thanks ~ maybe I'll be able to sleep better tonight".   He seems to have, too.  We both stress way too much over all things medical ~ lol

Make it a great day!

Dorothy

Dorothy, I had not heard about the fire fighters until I read your post.

My heart is so heavy and I want to cry.  I just seems as if we should

be able to prevent things like this in this day and age.  Just shows you

that Mother Nature still has a mind of the own and it is not always a

nice one.  I am praying for all effected by this and still praying for

an end to the fires.

More sad news and sort of happy news.  My brother Leigh and his

family are coming home.  The sad news is the reason why.  They

were planning on coming in August.  But, Leigh's best friend Paul,

lost his 3 year old son.  They were in Florida and he somehow got

out and they found him in the pool.  This just breaks my heart.  I

am not sure if they were living down there or vacationing. Their boy

was special needs...he was autistic and other issues.  Mom thinks he

was their only child.  I will have to ask Leigh.  We nicknamed Paul

Eddy, as we said he was an Eddy Haskell, lol.  Honey dripped from

his lips, lol.  So they are coming home for the funeral.  I think Leigh

is feeling this very deeply and thinking about his own kids.  He has

called and talked to mom several times today and he does that when

he is upset.  So please say a prayer for Paul Hughes and his family.

Heaven has a lot of new angels in it!

Hugs,

For the Firefighters!

(Date Posted:07/02/2013 9:13 PM)

Hello my friends.

Marcela will be here in the morning, so I'm going to post tonight.

Mike's appointment went VERY well.  They took him in half an hour after we got there, but he was only in for half an hour instead of the usual hour.   Everything looked good and they kept saying how good his blood pressure was (meaning, I think, that it was about that of a dead person ~ that seems to be what "they" want these days).  It was so good, in fact, that the Dr took him off of one of his BP meds!   Yay!   He said that people with Parkinsons could have BP so low that they sometimes passed out!  (I could have told them that.  My friend Faye does that all the time!)  Mike has never had that experience, but before the last Parkinson's meds he went on, he had so little energy that everything was hard for him.  Now he seems to have a good deal of energy, and without the one BP med (he still has several others), he should be even better!

The only thing to be concerned about is the result of his blood test.   He is very grateful for your prayers, and will be even more so if the tests come back good.

Next we went to lunch at 240 Union.

We started with a lovely Smith & Hook Cabernet ~ very mellow and creamy and delicious.   Then Mike had to try a new appetizer on the menu   This is a fairly "upscale" restaurant, but the new menu item was Lobster Corn Dogs with a Stone Ground mustard and Fritos!   >LOL<   Now this HAS to make you laugh!

For lunch he had prime rib with horseradish cream sauce and grilled root vegatables.  (I had a bite ~ delish.)

I had my favorite Lobster Melt.

Then for desert, we split a banana cararmel chocolate flourless cake, with coffee for me and a cappuccino for Mike.  Seriously yummy.

Of course we could barely waddle out of the restaurant we were so stuffed!

Then on to pick up his new glasses and then home. I don't know what Mike did, but I passed out in front of the TV.   LOL

I'll try to get back in tomorrow afternoon after Marcela leaves.   I need to make some potato salad for the Fourth and I'm not sure what else needs to be done.

Lou Ann, What a horrid thing about your brother's friend's little boy.   I truly can't even imagine his heartbreak.   There is so much sadness in the world now.

Wishing you and annnieM a GOOD day!

Dorothy

SO GLAD THAT MIKE HAD HAPPY NEWS.  WE CERTAINLY
COULD USE MORE OF THAT.  YOUR MEALS LOOK WONDERFUL
AND I WANT THAT LOBSTER CORN DOG :)  DID YOU TRY IT?
WAS IT AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS.  ALL THE FOOD LOOKS FABULOUS.
I AM SO JEALOUS.  WE DO NOT EVEN HAVE ANYTHING GOOD
FOR TOMORROW.  NO GRILL SINCE MOM GAVE HERS TO THE
CHURCH.  WE HAVE HOT DOGS, WHICH SOUNDS LIKE SOME-
THING TO EAT FOR THE 4TH.  IF WE HAVE ANY POTATOES
I COULD MAKE SOME POTATO SALAD.  WE SPENT THIS MORNING
CUTTING UP RHUBARB IN VERY SMALL PIECES.  THURSDAY
MORNING WE ARE MAKING STRAWBERRY RHUBARB AND
RASPBERRY RHUBARB JAMS.  EACH BATCH NEEDS 6 CUPS OF
CHOPPED RHUBARB.  WE MEASURED OUT WHAT WE CUT AND
WE HAD 22 CUPS, LOL.  NO WONDER WHY IT SEEMED LIKE WE
WERE CHOPPING FOR EVER.
LEIGH AND FAMILY WILL NOT BE COMING HOME.  PAUL IS
HAVING THE FUNERAL IN FLORIDA AND INTERNMENT HERE
AT A LATER DATE.  SO WE SHALL SEE.
YOU ALL HAVE A SAFE AND HAPPY 4TH, HOWEVER YOU SPEND IT.
HUGS,

RE:JULY SIGN IN

Good Morning and Happy Birthday America!

Last night we finished off the meatloaf and I made potato salad and baked beans (which I need to "doctor" a bit more), and we'll have brats on the grill tonight.  We can watch the fireworks from the deck, though they are below instead of above, and we can have the TV 4th Specials on as well.     We opted not to go to the Block Party, though it's a bit awkward because several of the neighbors have really pushed us to go and said they'd drive us and so forth.  It's nice to feel wanted and we really considered it, but you can only do what you can do, and we really can't enjoy doing what we can do in that situation.

Mike got a call from his Doctor with his blood work results.  Everything is good except that as usual his White Count is "slightly elevated".   It has been much of the time for years, and could be the result of many things (infection, arthritis, stress, etc) or it could be a chronic low grade form of leukemia.   He will have another blood test in three months.   He does have arthritis, and no one is more stressed before a Dr appt, so we really don't think it's something we have to worry about ~~ but of course you can't hear words like that without some worry.

All the other tests were good, so we thank you again for your prayers ~~ and maybe if you could add just one more, just in case?

Lou Ann, I thought you would get a hoot out of that Lobster Corn Dog ~ complete with a package of Fritos!   We sure did!   I had a bite, and it really was surprisingly good ~ lobster with corn and I'm not sure what to bind it, then coated with batter and deep fried like a regular corn dog.  Tasty, but it really made us laugh.  You KNOW we had to try it!

Hot dogs sound perfect for the Fourth!

OMG, that's a whole lot of rhubarb to chop!  It will be worth it, though.

I'm sorry you won't get to see Leigh now.  It would surely have been an unhappy time, but still good to be able to spend time with him.  Maybe later.

Hope you are all having a great 4th!

Love you much.

Wishing you all a happy 4th of July!  We had planned on going up to Lead for the band concert and fireworks but it's raining, and I do not travel well on wet grass.  Dave will no doubt be able to play his concert in the band shell.  Yesterday I wrote and posted an ad on Craig's list for a new caregiver as Jamie will be quitting in August.  She will not be able to help me and to school and work at the nursing home.  She plans on working fulltime while she goes to school.  I don't think she will be able to keep up.  Maybe it will be an easier semester, but last semester it was all she could do to work for me part time.
Hi Lou Ann!  Breathtaking opening page!  I loved the little poem about July!  Where did the first half of the year go?  I love that they have a day for Jeff---bald is in!!!  So sorry to hear about the little boy dying.  I hope that your brother gets much comfort from your mom and their conversations.
Hi Dorothy!  Happy to hear that Mikes physical went well!  What a lovely celebration lunch you had!  I do think your lilacs will come back with water.  They are very hardy.

Hugs to all,

RE:JULY SIGN IN
(Date Posted:07/04/2013 9:09 PM)

I am sitting here listening to the fireworks at the park.
I used to never miss them   We walked into the park and
back out again as the traffic is horrendous.  But those days
are gone.  I would love to be able to see them, but am not
willing to face the discomfort of trying to go in some way.
We did not end up having hot dogs.  Mom made tons of jam
this morning and could not use my help, or so she said.  She
was tired all day.  So I called my sister and asked if they
would be in town around supper because if so I would like
her to pick us up something for supper.  It worked out that
Jordan could do that for us.  We got food from Culver's.
Prime Rib sandwiches, we split fries and had Caramel Turtle
Custard for dessert.  Yum, yum.  Now we are watching
A Capitol Fourth.
Dorothy, happy to hear that Mike's blood work was pretty
good and I will continue to pray that his white count is just
stress related and nothing else :)  Brats is what I really
would have liked for the 4th, with potato salad, veggies and
dip and a cake with a flag on top made with strawberries
and blueberries.   Oh yeah, cannot forget the baked beans.
My mom makes the best beans ever.  That is what I would
call the perfect July 4th meal :)
annnieM, keeping my fingers crossed that you find someone
awesome on Craig's list to help you.  Someone that could do
it for the long run, so that you do not have to keep training
someone new.  Someone who you really hit it off with and
enjoy spending time with.
You all have a fabulous Friday!
Hugs,

Ours as you can imagine was very quiet.  We flew the flag and had a lovely glass of Cabernet before dinner and then brats on the grill and bourbon baked beans.  We watched "B" Horror movies during the day ~ a long time Patriotic Holiday tradition ~ lol.   We were able to watch the fireworks from our easy chairs in the man cave, and they were better than ever.   I have no idea which fireworks came from where, but there were some really impressive ones I think from Coors field and somewhere near downtown Denver, and then all around from one edge of our window to the other.  They are pretty far away, so you see all the color and the "bombs bursting in air", but not the detail you would if you were right under them.  For us they are at eye level rather than above.  I think next year I'm going to try to find our binoculars (still in a box in the basement, I'm sure) or get some new ones.   I tried to get pictures the first year we were here, but I don't know enough about the camera settings to get good ones at night from this distance.

annnieM,I'm sorry you couldn't get to the concert, and I'm sorrier yet that you are losing Jamie.  I hope you find someone you like as much to replace her.

I hope you are right about the lilacs.  I'd really hate to lose them.

Lou Ann, your Fourth of July dinner sounded awesome!

Thank you for the continued prayers for Mike.  He does seem to have chronic slightly elevated white count, so we don't worry about it too much ~ but I'd hate to suddenly learn that we SHOULD have been worrying.  Especially with my being a Professional Worrier and all.

How does your mom make her baked beans?  You'd have to laugh at mine last night.  When Marianne and Bill were here we had a fried chicken dinner and I made bourbon baked beans.  Mike had picked up the groceries and instead of plain old Campbell's beans he got some fancier versions of Bushes.  Should have been fine BUT the first ingredient in the beans was Mustard, and Marianne does not eat mustard or even want it on the table when she is eating.  LOL.  Knowing Marianne hates mustard, I hadn't added any mustard to the beans ~ thank goodness ~ BUT when I tasted them the mustard taste was very strong even to me.  Needless to say, not many got eaten, and I'd made a ton ~ so I froze them.   For last night's dinner I thawed them and added brown sugar and a slosh of Grand Mariner to cut the mustard and baked them for a couple of hours.  Pretty good if I do say so.  Ha!

We didn't have any desert, so that cake would have been great!

Here is another of the letters I did for the MS event.  annnieM. you know of course
that MS is for Multiple Sclerosis.   I was a part of a fund raising event for MS.  That is
what this refers to.:)

The 4th was certainly noisy.  I think the neighbors were trying to out show the fireworks
at the park.  Only the neighbors far outlasted the park. lol  We watched A Capital Fourth
and the fireworks on there were beautiful.

My brother and his family are on there way home as I type.  They should arrive here
sometime tomorrow afternoon.  His friend Paul's sons memorial and internment
will be on Wednesday.  They are staying through to next Sat and then heading home.
I think the boys are spending the night here tomorrow, then they will be staying at
Joanne's one night and then at Diane's the rest of the week.  Right now Diane is
house, puppy and cat sitting until Tuesday.  Leigh and Kristi are staying at the same
hotel as Paul and his family so they can be near is needed.  Kristi with her background
in neonatal bereavement counseling should be able to help comfort them.

We were at Jordan's Graduation Party today.  Lots of good food...too much good food.
Then on Wednesday Jordan leaves for Texas for the rest of the summer.  My sister
will have a month of peace and quiet...NOT.  They seriously have to look for a new place
to live as they had their bankruptcy hearing last week and were told that gives them
about 2 months to leave their home.  So it will be a busy month.

I need a nap.  Going out and sitting on my ass for a couple of hours really takes is out
of me.  But it is too late in the day to nap, so it will be going to bed early.
Have a Blessed Sunday all.
Hugs,

I did get to the concert on the fourth.  It was OK and so were the fireworks.  I thought about the future when Henry can be with us and that will be fun!  There was some excitement as the part where we were, but we didn't hear about it until the next day.  Some local man shot himself.  With all the noise from the fireworks and people, we didn't even hear it.

Soon we have to go get groceries.  Just thought I would come in and say hello!

RE:JULY SIGN IN

Ok, let's try this again.  Yesterday got away from me.   I woke up before 2 AM and couldn't get back to sleep, so I got up and went into the front room to read until Mike got up.  I had hoped reading would put me to sleep, but it didn't so I was "off" all day.  (Oh, hush up!  More "off" than usual, then.)

At 8 AM the doorbell rang.  I didn't get dressed and made up until close to 10, so I didn't answer it, but Mike did.  One of the neighbors wanted to know if we wanted her to use her tools to clean our driveway!   It got really dirty from the landscapers and we were going to ask Matt to have them clean it but it was the holiday weekend, and by yesterday it didn't look too bad after the winds and some rain.  I guess it was still offensive.  I'm really sure she meant well, but I hadn't had any sleep and it really hit me wrong ~ lol.  The blower Mike was going to use wasn't good enough so she went home and got hers and blew it and even got down on her hands and knees and clean the cracks!   In the afternoon it rained HARD, so now hopefully we are presentable again.

We went out and poured tons of water on those poor lilacs and then the lawn mowing crew came and we went back inside. Later in the PM it rained really hard for 10 or 15 minutes, then stopped, then started again several times.  Actually good watering technique.   lol   Our sprinkler system goes off at 5 AM and 6:30 AM and 9 PM for 5 minutes a time on Sundays, so I don't think we'll go out and water again today ~ lol.

Wimbledon just came on.  GO ANDY!  It would be so wonderful for him to win.   Oooh, wow ~ what a point!  This is going to be a good match.

Well, enuf about me, me, me!  Let's talk about YOU.

Lou Ann ~ Oops, we did it again!  lol.   Love your stationery and tag.

I'm so glad your brother and his family are going to be there with you all for this week, though of course the reason he is coming is so sad.

Congratulations to Jordan.  I'm sorry to see him go for the summer, but i hope he has a great summer.   I know you will miss him.

I'm so glad you got to the concert and to see the fireworks, annieM.  What an awful thing to learn that someone shot himself!   I can imagine very few would be aware with all the noise of the fireworks and people celebrating.  What an awful place to commit suicide ~ if that was his intention.

Ok.  Later my lovelies.   Dinner is made and only needs to be reheated so it's going to be a nice, quiet day.  Maybe I'll finish my book.  (Cleo Coyle's "A Brew to Kill")
