RE:DECEMBER SIGN IN
(Date Posted:12/16/2013 9:14 AM)

9 days until Christmas!

I still haven't written cards, but I really hope I get that done today.   Then I start on wrapping gifts for Mike.  While I feel like the time has gotten away from me so badly, I guess I'm really in a fairly good place.

The party yesterday was very nice.  Since we'd been the first ones to arrive at Sue and John's dessert party, we decided to go a bit later.   We arrived only 15 minutes after the official start of the party, and we could barely get in the door for all the people.   Everyone stands around visiting, and it makes it hard to drop off your offering or get a name tag or fill your plate and make your way to a chair.   I guess we need to learn to just stand and talk before taking any action, rather than the other way around.  We both tend to just want to get out of the way.  Ha.   My chicken puffs were not even close to being up to snuff, but I just put them on the table and moved on rather than apologizing for them like I usually do.

We got lots of hugs and a chance to visit with many neighbors.   One of the original residents who is primarily the leader in keeping parties and activities going to keep the neighbors close has given everyone an angel ornament every year since she moved in.   Initially it was only a few, but now we are 40 homes and will be 41 when Sherri's house sells.   I don't know if she'll keep up the tradition, but it is lovely.  We now have two angels.  Others have 4 or 5.

It's always such fun to see the houses and how differently they are decorated.  Similar models never look the same.  This house was the smallest model, but it's just lovely with soft dusty seafoam and ecru walls, and lovely decorator pieces.   We didn't go downstairs but everyone was raving about how lovely it was.   Mark's mother lives in the downstairs with her own walk out.  I'm not sure if there is more than just her apartment there or not.   I really should have explored.

Tons of food, and for my great comfort, nothing too elegant or elaborate. just good.   Barbara brought a big bowl full of Whisky Slush.  How she ever got it across the street is beyond me, but it was delicious and I had two glasses.  How I walked home is also something of a mystery.    Ho! Ho! Ho!

After we came home, we changed clothes and sat in the "Christmas Room" with the tree and watched the musical "Oliver!"    I'm not sure why, but 'Oliver!' always seems so Christmasy to us.     I didn't hear how strong the winds were, but Sheri's papmas grass was completely sideways and the howl of the wind was almost frightening.   We were warm and cozy inside.

smiley70
Lou Ann, it sounds like you are on top of Christmas too ~ as much as we can ever be.    We work so hard, stress so much, and then it's all over and we are taking the decorations down and getting on diets to undo the pre Christmas "damage".   Seems crazy ~ but I wouldn't miss a minute of it.

How nice that Louann comes to cut your hair ~~ even if you do have to clean the floor before and after.      I think I got a good haircut this time, too.  I wasn't so sure when I left the shop, but once I got it shampoo'd and particularly after I got my color in, I'm happy.

And now the parties begin, with your nurse friends coming on Wednesday.  I am SO glad your mom is at home and feeling herself again!

Ho! Ho! Ho!    Have a wonderful day!

I am so glad you enjoyed your party. I hope that you did eventually find somewhere to sit and enjoy your food.  I love Oliver!!

♪ Food Glorious Food ♪ This is my circle of

 friends theme song, lol.

All gifts are wrapped.  Except two of moms that

have not come yet.  One for me and another she

has to get for Jason.  We are expecting

two boxes coming in from Leigh's in Arkansas.

I also crocheted a hat made a crochet flower for

it and sewed the bows on the gloves.  My sister

picked up a scarf and gloves for mom to give a

woman she has sort of taken under her wing at

TOPS that lives in a group home.  She wanted to

get her something for Christmas and one of the

caregivers said she could use a hat.  So mom told

Suzanne to get her a set.  She called and said she

found a scarf and gloves that matched but could

find no hats....it has been so bitterly cold here it

does not surprise me.  So I said have her get a

yarn that matches and I will make a hat.  I did

regret that a bit as it turned out they were black

and with my vision black is very hard to work with.

The gloves have a cherry red cuff and bow on

each one.  So I thought I would take the bows

off the gloves and put them on the hat to match.

So I tried to take them off and found they were

glued on!  Can you believe that?  One came off in

my hand.  I had to put it back on as it left glue on

the glove that would not come off and they would

 come
apart the first time they were washed, so I

sewed
them on and that was not easy to sew

through the glue.  So then I found a red yarn that

fairly well matched the red bows on the gloves

and made a crocheted rose to put on the hat.  It

was my first flower and I did make mistakes, but

it still turned out well.  So got that done.  Then I

got all the wrapping supplies sorted and packed

away, leaving several Christmas bags and tissue

for presents not wrapped yet.

Jordan is coming tomorrow morning and I will be

supervising him in cleaning the floors and

vacuuming the carpet.  Mom will have Jordan take

her over to my sister Diane's for the day.  She

had some surgery done on her ankle.  She broke

it many years ago and has had trouble with it ever

since.  It has gotten really bad and they are going

to try going in and cleaning it up.  Take off a spur

and scrape out the calcium build ups and whatever

else they can do that is least invasive.  Hoping it

will make the ankle better without having drastic

surgery on it.  She had the surgery this afternoon

and we worry that she is home alone now and

tomorrow with taking pain meds, etc. Plus she has

a miserable cold and they were even going to post

pone the surgery but she was in too much pain to

wait any longer. So we will see how tomorrow

goes.  Mom did send several heat and eat meals over

to her house yesterday.  Things she could easily

nuke and eat.  Jordan better be prepared to

work as I will not put up with a sloppy job.  So

then Wed. will just be touching up the rooms

and making a blueberry torte.

Have a terrific Tuesday!

Hugs,

Ho! Ho! Ho!    I found a picture of the Christmas tree we had in 2005, when we were still putting up big trees.

Another nice day, and our snow is almost all melted.  Like it was at our old house, the houses facing North still have a good bit of snow, and those facing South have none.  It used to be so aggravating when our neighbors across the street never had to shovel and we always did.   Now we face West but we still get the Southern sun on our driveway and walk ~ and life is good.

Continuing on the way things have been going, everything that could go wrong yesterday did.   Just little things, but so annoying.   I only got half of the Christmas cards done, and we are going out to lunch today, part of our Christmas celebration, so I'm sure I won't finish today.

Marcela comes tomorrow morning and then Mike has a haircut.  Guess I'll just keep on keeping on.

Lou Ann you are awesome to get everything done, and take on more for your mom's friend.   How clever of you to make her a hat to match her gloves and scarf ~ how she will love it!   That really makes it seem like Christmas, doesn't it?

I only got half of my cards done yesterday and I haven't wrapped one gift yet.   And it's just Mike and me and I'm not entertaining or anything!   Yiikes.

Oooh, poor Diane!  That sounds so painful.  I'm glad your mom is going to be with her and help her.   Families can be so annoying we all know, but your family really comes through for each other.   Says something about the way you were all raised.

All that you are getting done, and you are making beautiful borders, too!  I see some more 'stealing' in my future, as soon as I have time.

In case you didn't see it, Ayla made this tag for all of us and put it in our Facebook Cuppa site.

Have a great day!

Yes Dorothy, I did see Ayla's lovely gift. But thanks for the heads up, lol.  Do not worry, you will get it all done...you have a week yet.  We have been having really cold weather.  But it is getting warmer...by Thursday it is supposed to get up to 30°, a veritable heat wave.
The living room is done and looks lovely.  Well....I do need to clean up my personal space.  The dining room needs sorting.  The kitchen floor is done.  I need to clean the fixtures in the bathroom and then the house is ready.  So now the focus is baking.  So maybe tomorrow will be a cookie making day.  We are still waiting on 1 gift in the mail and of course it is for me.  I am sure it is some dumb thing mom ordered from Publisher's Clearing House.  Mom keeps sending those contests in and since she gets 2 in variations of her name she fills both out.  I told her is by chance she did win....she would more than likely be disqualified due to having more than one entry in the contest.  Or she would not be legal since neither entries are in her exact name even though she has sent in corrections.  I think she seriously thinks she can win this lottery.  I do her check book and see all the checks to them and I told her it will not help her win.  Also told her she cannot afford to keep that spending up as her annuity will be ending soon.  But she keeps on ordering crap.  Whenever I ask what something is, she always claims that it is a free gift with something she bought.  I could go on and on but will not, lol.  I love her and she puts up with me and that is all that matters.
I got a couple pics of the tree I will post.

T'was the week before Christmas . . . . Yiikes!    I'm never gonna get done!   I really had wanted to ask some folks over, very casually, but I can't see how I can even do that!  Maybe the week after Christmas . . . .

We went out for a lovely lunch yesterday, mailed the half of the cards I had written and ran a couple of errands and nothing else.   Marcela comes this morning (I hope!) so I won't get any more cards written until the afternoon.   Mike has a haircut this afternoon, and that's about it for our "agenda".

Lou Ann, your tree is Spectacular!  Really, really lovely ~ and look at all the presents under the tree already!   I have about half of the cards left to write and  just about all of my wrapping for Mike left to do, and the paper is all in the basement. smiley83 Your house is clean ~~ but wait.  You still have to bake.   I'll reserve total envy until you have finished.  Ha!   Seriously, you are so on top of things.   I'll get there, it's just apparently a slow climb this year.  lol

Hafta get dressed and ready for Marcela.  Later!

HAVE A WONDER DAY TOMORROW.

RE:DECEMBER SIGN IN
(Date Posted:12/19/2013 10:30 AM)

Good Morning!

Two Christmas cards left to write and then into the mail.  Will they make it?  I hope so.  I've given up hope of any mailed out of country making it.

Now on to gift wrapping.  I'm still thinking of asking some people over for a glass of wine or a cup of coffee, but I suspect everyone else is busier than we are, so we may wait until after the holidays.

Marcela came yesterday morning and she brought us the most beautiful tray of cookies you've ever seen, and a home made fruitcake,,.  Very small, elegant and delicious cookies and lots of them.    I told her they were too pretty to eat ~ which they are! ~ and that we would save them for company since my cookies turned out so terrible this year.   She said she will be back in a few days with more cookies for us, so we should eat these.   Well, hey.  Who am I to argue.  We had a party last night ~ just Mike and me in front of the tree with an eggnog and the cookies and "It's a Wonderful Life"!

We'll mail the remaining cards today and pick up a few groceries for our  Christmas Eve smorgasbord.   I figure I am going to gain about 200 lbs throughout the Christmas season.   It's a good thing I took off a few pounds before we started!

I've got the sweetest little boy curled up next to me as I type.  He's getting to be like that more and more ~~ and then the devil cat comes out and overtakes him.  lol   I'll take the sweet one while I can get him.

Lou Ann, thank you for the beautiful new tag!   You are so generous ~ and so talented!

Your poor mom!   One thing after another ~ how miserable.   At least the cold sores are just uncomfortable and not life threatening.

You are so on top of things.   I'm getting there, but it's been much more of a struggle than it should have been.  I swear I'm moving through molasses!

Postponement until Friday will give you a few minutes to just relax.  Sounds good to me!

I can well imagine your tree with the large family and all the gifts beneath the tree!   Don't forget to get pictures!

Ok, watching Easter Parade ~~~ what?  Didja run out of Christmas movies to watch??  LOL    We haven't been watching as many of the Hallmark (etc) Christmas stories lately, but we've re-watched several different versions of 'A Christmas Carol' multiple times.   It just never gets old.   I think we've watched all of our DVDs except three, and those must wait until Christmas Eve Day and Christmas Day.   Tradition demands that we watch "A Christmas Story" (which obviously we don't have to watch on our own DVD because they play it over and over all Christmas Eve/Day) and on Christmas Eve we must watch "Magoo's Christmas Carol" (long story about my long lost youth, but it's become an important part of our Christmas tradition) and "Peter, Paul and Mary's Christmas Concert" from I can't remember what year, but a long time ago.  Lovely background for opening presents and having egg nog and other goodies.

Have a lovely Thursday.

RE:DECEMBER SIGN IN
(Date Posted:12/19/2013 8:20 PM)

I did not get a lot done today.  Just one small job that turned into a big one.  I have an end table next to my chair.  It is really a bedside table and has 2 deep drawers in it that were both packed to over flowing, lol.  I can never find anything in them.  So today I took everything out of them and sorted it all.  1 bag of recycling, 3 baqs going to my bedroom, and refilled the drawers and they still seem pretty full, but I can see where things are.  It took me several hours and the most wonderful thing happened.  In the bottom drawer at the very bottom in the very back I found a VHS tape of Scrooge with Albert Finney.  I do not recall ever getting it.  WooHoo.  I did mention it to Carole as a possible gift for me, but if she does find it, it would be a DVD so that would be fine, lol.  Cannot wait to watch it.  Sometime when mom is away.  She does not like The Christmas Carol/Scrooge or any of the million offtakes of it.
Not sure we are getting together with the ladies tomorrow night.  We are in a freezing rain warning until 9am tomorrow and a winter storm watch.  Also moms cold sore is worse.  She has a very dangerous cold sore.  Cold sores are Herpes Simplex, which is what took the vision in my right eye.  While it is not common, a cold sore can spread to your eyes or other areas.  The Dr. said moms is a cold sore gone wild.  She put her on Valtrex and she is using the topical Abreva.  Her whole upper lip is swollen making her talk funny. She has face and jaw pain and headaches.  She has been taking some tylenol with codeine that I had left over from the dentist and takes 2 and it barely effects it.  If it is still hurting so much tomorrow she needs to call her doctor and get something ordered for pain so that she does not end up suffering all weekend.  Maybe something stronger.  She is pretty miserable.  It hurts to put ice on it, but after a bit it does numb it some...but does not last real long.  I am going crazy.  I just wish there was something I could do to help her.  Also she keeps touching it and it is highly contagious. I am so afraid of getting it and having it spread on me.  It terrifies me.  I warned the ladies but left it up to them.  Mom was ok with getting together.  She is supposed to be at the ARC Bingo/Christmas Dance tomorrow night, but I do not think she should go.  It is up to her.  Then she would be coming home around 9pm to the ladies and I just think it is all too much for her.  We will see.
How lucky you are to have Marcella.
Hugs,

Hooray!  The cards are in the mail!  Finally!   Then we picked up some groceries for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

More exciting news ~~~ We have Baby!    Christina has been in the hospital for a week trying to keep the little one from coming too early.   Aaron has had a cot in her room and hasn't left her side.   He's such a good man.  I'm so proud of him for so many things.     So, they induced her last night and the little one came this evening.  Vincent Arthur Panke is almost six weeks early, but he looks good size for a preemie.

Unfortunately, I know very little about him other than that he is here and he is beautiful.  I think maybe 'dad' is excited, and exhausted, and Grandma and Grandpa were driving from Butternut to Rhinelander and I suspect when they got there, I wasn't at the top of their priority lists.  lol

I do have pictures and a video, and I'm more than happy with that ~ for now.

LOL ~~ I sent you that VCR of the Albert Finney Scrooge a couple of years ago, along with Pride and Prejudice. I love them both and thought you would too.  I knew your mom didn't want to watch, but I kind of wondered why you never said anything about watching them yourself.

Ah, the good old Chicken Pox/Shingles virus.  I didn't realize that cold sores were in the same family.   I rarely get cold sores, though I get canker sores fairly often, and I've had the Shingles TWICE.  You know me ~ glutton for punishment.    I've never seen a cold sore that bad ~ how awful for her.   I hope it clears quickly ~~ and stays away from you!

Nite-Nite.

LIFE SUCKS AND CHRISTMAS IS RUINED.

I DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN.  WE FOUND OUT LAST NIGHT

THAT MY NEPHEW JORDAN IS IN JAIL.  HE WAS ASKED TO COME

AND TALK TO A DETECTIVE AND ENDED UP BEING ARRESTED FOR

RAPE.  I CANNOT BELIEVE IT.  SUPPOSED TO BE A GIRL HE WAS

DATING IN OCTOBER WHO IS CLAIMING HE RAPED HER.  MY

SISTER SAYS HE WAS 18 AND HE THOUGHT SHE WAS 17, THOUGH

IT TURNS OUT SHE WAS 16 AND THE SEX WAS CONSENSUAL.  SHE

BELIEVES THE GIRLS MOTHER FOUND OUT AND NOW THE RAPE

CHARGES HAVE BEEN MADE.  HE WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE THE JUDGE

EITHER TODAY OR MONDAY AT 11.  WE HAVE NOT HEARD ANYTHING.

MY SISTER IS WORKING TODAY AND CALLED BUT COULD NOT TALK.

I FEEL WRETCHED.  I CANNOT THINK OF ANYTHING ELSE.  I DO NOT

DEAL WITH MAJOR STRESS WELL.  I PRAY THAT I DO NOT GET A

SHINGLES OUTBREAK.

SHINGLES AND CHICKEN POX ARE HERPES ZOSTER.  BUT COLD SORES

ARE HERPES SIMPLEX.  ALL RELATED.  A COLD SORE CAN GIVE YOU

SHINGLES OR CHICKEN POX AS THEY ARE ALL INTER-RELATED.  MOMS

IS REALLY BAD.  I TOOK A PIC WITH MY PHONE, BUT DO NOT KNOW

HOW TO POST IT HERE.  I AM WORRIED THAT THE ADDITIONAL STESS

MAY CAUSE HER MORE PROBLEMS.

I HAVE TO GO.  WILL TALK TOMORROW.

LOVE, LOU ANN

Ho! Ho! Ho!   It's the First Day of Winter and we've got Snow!

Mike and I were on our respective Laptops, still in the bedroom this morning and he read that "No snow in the forecast between now and Christmas".  Then we opened the blinds ~ Ha!  It actually looks kind of icy and probably it won't stick, but our Weather Folk are definitely entertaining, if not trustworthy.

I got all of Mike's gifts wrapped yesterday, so today and tomorrow I have to try again to make decent cream puffs and chicken salad to stuff them with, and a braunschweiger pate' for our Christmas Eve.  I'll make the basic pate' today, and "ice" it with cream cheese and decorate it tomorrow.  Then on Christmas Eve day I can stuff celery and make rumaki and I won't have much to do at all, which definitely makes for a nicer Christmas Eve for me.

We had talked about going out for lunch or dinner today, but neither of us has much enthusiasm for it, so we'll wait for our planned lunch at the Briarwood on Monday.  Everything will be very low key between now and Christmas, but maybe that's just what we need.  I got another video and more pictures of Vincent Arthur ~ I'm loving this.  "Grandma" Mary Ann said he is so tiny, but he's breathing on his own and in the pictures he looks normal baby size, though I know of course he is not.  Six weeks early is scary to me, but he really seems to be doing great.

Oooh, Mike just brought Chocolate Mocha coffee, my morning pills and water (lol) and a plate of cookies to me, still propped up in bed talking to my friends.  Lovely way to start the day!

No blood thinner for me today, per the nurse at my cardiologists office.  My numbers are way high which means my blood is too thin.  No idea why.  I've had perfect numbers forever, but the last three times (six weeks) they have been too high (3.4 & 3.5), and this one really high (4.3).  I haven't changed eating habits or medications in a way that should effect it, so all we can think of is stress.

It looks like our snow has stopped and the sun has just come out, so I may need you to send me some of yours if I want a White Christmas.   Mike was reading the weather forecast for Davenport Ia ~ nasty ~ and we were remembering all of the times when we drove there for Christmas and how challenging it was.  I miss having Christmas with his family, with a stop in Rochester MN to have an early Christmas celebration with my Aunt Jean on the way there, but it's sure nice not to have to worry about what the weather will be for the drive, and hitting some of those terrible ice storms.  We had some pretty harrowing experiences over the years.

Marcela came over last night and brought us MORE cookies, so I will be very happy to share them with you!  Sooo good.  Please, take a plate full!

I'm so glad Jordan didn't have to spend the night in jail.  The "one size fits all" rules for "crimes" creates more problems than it solves sometimes.  Clearly he and the girl had sex and she was underage and it sounds like he wasn't, which makes it a crime ~ but also clearly that law is not really about two teenagers having sex, but some older predator taking advantage of a younger person. That very obviously wasn't the case. If the prosecutor has some common sense they will hopefully be able to work this out without wrecking his future.  I will keep him in my prayers.

Kristie and Nick's announcement of the sex of their baby really was cute!

Try to make it a good day!

The snow we had in the morning quickly melted.  I was in the kitchen putting together my braunschweiger pate' so I didn't see the change in the weather until I came back in to the front "Christmas Room".  I was planning to go out and get the mail as soon as it was delivered, usually between 4 & 5 PM, but when I looked out our sidewalk was wet, and the North facing sidewalks across the street from us were WHITE! Needless to say, I didn't go for the mail.  It kept snowing until we went to bed.   It isn't going to get above freezing today, so the snow may stay for a little while, but tomorrow and the rest of the week is supposed to be in the 40s and we do have the Colorado sun.  It should melt.

Merry Christmas everyone!
