Topic :   'Work is Worship' - Priyanka Chopra

Hardly a week since her latest flick Love Story 2050 bombed at the box-office, Priyanka's back to business. Far away from an upset boyfriend Harman who took refuge in the high-rises of Dubai, Piggy Chops is busy battling it out in Mumbai. And if you think she's trying to fight off the gloom that has enveloped Harman's debut flick, you are far from the truth.

In fact, the pretty actress is already promoting her next flick Fashion even as she takes a break from shooting for Dostana and hurries to wrap up the last schedule of the Madhur Bhandarkar film. And as soon as she wraps that, Priyanka will hop on to the sets of Vishal Bharadwaj's film Kamine the very next day. But this is not all. The dusky beauty's kitty is so full with shooting schedules that she has been working non-stop since June and will get a break only by mid-October later this year.

In between shooting for Kamine from August 8 to October 15, the actress has even allotted ten days in September for the second schedule of Dostana. And in between delivering her shots, the full of zing actress will also shoot for four commercials and take time out to promote Drona, her super-hero flick with Abhishek that's slated for released on October 2.

But ask if Priyanka is feeling tied down with so many professional commitments and pat comes the reply, "I am still very young and this is the age to work. While family and friends are equally important, they can always be accommodated in between work schedules. At this stage of my career and life, work is worship!"

Topic :   Court rules lesbians are not just from Lesbos

ATHENS (Reuters) - A Greek court has dismissed a request by residents of the Aegean island of Lesbos to ban the use of the word lesbian to describe gay women, according to a court ruling made public on Tuesday.

Three residents of Lesbos, the birthplace of the ancient Greek poetess Sappho whose love poems inspired the term lesbian, brought a case last month arguing the use of the term in reference to gay women insulted their identity.

In a July 18 decision, the Athens court said the word did not define the identity of the residents of the island, and so it could be validly used by gay groups in Greece and abroad.

The ruling ordered the plaintiffs to pay court expenses of 230 euros ($366.2).

"This is a good decision for lesbians everywhere," Vassilis Chirdaris, lawyer for the Gay and Lesbian Union of Greece, told Reuters. "A court in Athens could not stop people around the world from using it. It was ridiculous."

He said the plaintiffs were free to appeal the decision in a higher court.

Lesbos, which lies just off the Turkish Coast, has become a gathering spot for gay women from around the world, especially at the village of Eressos which is regarded as the birthplace of the poet in the 7th century B.C.

Several residents testified during the trial that the use of the word lesbian had brought recognition to the island and boosted its tourist trade.

Topic :   Rihanna’s Beau Asked Her to Cover Up?

Rihanna's alleged flame Chris Brown has reportedly warned her against wearing revealing clothes, for he fears the singer's sexy curves may end up attracting too many male fans.

"Chris adores her, but he gets a little jealous when she is strutting her stuff. Her stage costumes are racy, and when she is not performing, she likes to dress to impress," the China Daily quoted a source as saying.

Rihanna, however, is determined to continue showing off her fantastic figure, the source says.

"She is sexy and likes to dress sexy," the source adds.

The 'Umbrella' star has not confirmed that she is dating Brown as yet.

Even Brown said earlier this week that he was not prepared to talk about his alleged romance with Rihanna.

"Nobody wants to focus on what's positive, everybody just wants to know about my personal life. Every interview I do, it's like, 'So, how are you and such and such doing?' And I'm like, 'I don't know you, why you all in my business?'" said the 19-year-old pop hunk, who has been spotted kissing the pop beauty on numerous occasions.

The Prime Minister, Dr Navin Ramgoolam, G.C.S.K, stated at the National Assembly yesterday that he was not against the idea of live telecasts of parliamentary proceedings.

Replying to a Parliamentary Question Dr Ramgoolam pointed out that once modalities are finalised, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) would be in a position to provide extensive coverage of parliamentary debates. At present, parliamentary proceedings are included as news items in the MBC news bulletins, he said.

The Prime Minister recalled that the MBC provides extensive coverage of parliamentary debates including Private Notice Questions.  He added that the length of time that the MBC allocates for the broadcast of such debates depends on the newsworthiness of the subject.

The MBC is allocating substantial time for the broadcast of the debates of the National Assembly in the news bulletins while ensuring that the contents of the news bulletins are fair and balanced, added the Prime Minister.

Topic :   Now, Madonna in £1million Sex-Tape Scandal

As if reports about an affair with baseball star Alex Rodriguez were not enough, Madonna now has to deal with a cameraman who claims that he has in his possession a sex tape of the pop icon and A-Rod.

The cameraman is willing to sell the tape to the highest bidder, with the selling price starting at a whopping 1 million pounds.

The footage, he claims, was shot with a hidden camera in an apartment Madge and Rodriguez used for clandestine trysts in the afternoon.

But legal experts say that the plan could backfire for the man himself, for he could end up facing prosecution for voyeurism and burglary, reports the Daily Star.

One expert said: "If footage was obtained in this way it would be an outrageous invasion of privacy."

"But more than that he would not have had his friend's consent to install the camera and must have entered the apartment without approval to hide it. That is burglary.

"He would be prima facie guilty of voyeurism. Instead of making a million he'd be going to jail for a few years. Even if the video existed it would probably be seized by the courts."

Madonna's lawyers in the meantime have said that they are "aware" of the claims but are not commenting.

Topic :   I hate wearing bra: Rakhi Sawant

Rakhi Sawant's sexiness kit would be devoid of a bra. Confused? Well, that's our desi item bomb's reply to Hollywood actress Carmen Electra's concept of a sexiness kit.

Electra recently said that the best way to snare a man is to keep a 'sexiness kit' with you at all times. "Keep a sexiness kit in the car or in a drawer at work with the essentials in it - perfume, lip gloss, and a pair of heels because they'll help you showcase your legs better.

Knowing you look hot also boosts your all-around confidence," said the Baywatch babe.

Sawant completely agrees with Electra and says, "If I am wearing an evening gown, I'll make sure I am not wearing a bra. I hate wearing it," says the item girl who admits that she would, however, "wear a panty".

"My lips are very pouty, my eyes are very sexy and my face is very glamorous." She would besides keeping a bra at bay like to accentuate her assets with a nude lip gloss, mascara and eyebrow powder to make the eyebrows thicker and darker. The item girl also feels that a woman should always smell good. "Ladki main khusboo na ho, to mazaa nahi aayega."

Topic :   Madhuri back again in Meghna Gulzar's '36-24-36'

Last we heard her say that she hasn't signed any film after her comeback film, Aaja Nachle. But here's the latest on Madhuri Dixit. She is all set to play an out-and-out comic role for the first time in her career in Meghna Gulzar's film titled 36-24-36. The film will be produced by Pritish Nandy Communications.

When contacted, director Meghna confirmed the news. She told Mumbai Mirror, "Yes, it's true that we are in talks with Madhuri to play the protagonist in a comedy film. But it's too early to discuss anything right now."

On being probed further, she added "Madhuri's character in my film is very different from what she's ever done so far." Meghna met the actress and narrated the script to her when she was in India recently. "I was happy to watch Madhuri laughing as I narrated the script to her. She loved the script and showed a keen interest in doing it," she said.

So what is it that prompted Meghna to approach Madhuri? "She'll be fabulous for the role as it's something that we have never seen her do before. We're waiting to work out the dates," said Meghna.

And what about the interesting title? Meghna laughed and said, "The film is obviously about measurements and weight loss. Not that I think Madhuri's out of shape. But she will do complete justice to the character. And she too said that it's something she'd definitely like to do."

As Pritish Nandy Communications and Meghna are well aware of the constraints that the actress has, they are willing to make all the necessary arrangements so that she doesn't face any trouble while shooting for the film. Meghna added, "We obviously approached her knowing that she would have problems staying away from her family and home for a long time. Right now she is busy with the tour (The Unforgettable). She's figuring out how she'll manage her children and family while shooting for my film."

But that's something Pritish Nandy has kept in mind and if need be, the film will be shot in the US so that Madhuri will not have to stay away from home for too long. "Madhuri hasn't laid any conditions but PNC and I are aware of her situation and will work out the logistics accordingly," said Meghna.

By showing interest in the development of Mauritius, women will be contributing towards their own development, said the Minister of Women's Rights, Child Development, Family Welfare and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Indira Seebun, yesterday at Octave Wiehé auditorium in Réduit.

In her speech at a sensitisation programme on budgetary measures taken in favour of women, which was organised by the Ministry of Women's Rights, Child Development, Family Welfare and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Seebun stressed the importance for women to grasp opportunities and take full advantage of facilities that can enable them to increase their revenue and raise their standard of living.

Topic :   Humanitarian Lara Dutta!

Lara Dutta is not just one of the most beautiful and gifted actresses of her generation, currently filming for Blue, Banda Yeh Bindass Hai and Billo Barber. She is also a living embodiment of the concept of the three goods - mind, body and soul.

Lara was Miss Universe in 2000 and appears to have taken seriously all those things that beauty queens say during the interview stage. She is well known for her work on Aids Awareness but is lesser known for the important work she is doing with the United Nations Missing Programme where she is active in the promotion of Female Reproductive Rights.

Throughout the world, there is a tendency for more men to be born than women even in situations where there is no interference during pregnancy or at birth. The reasons for this are not entirely clear but Hamilton's theory suggests that it may occur through an overshoot - essentially the species seeking to ensure that it always has enough males to ensure continuity. A larger number of men will die through accidents, war etc during the most fertile period of 13-33. In humans, therefore, the normal ratio is 996 women to every 1000 men.

However, in India, there has always been a tendency to value sons over daughters at birth - in 1901 the ratio was 972 due to infanticide. The ratio in India now has declined to 933. This may no longer be due to infanticide but is more likely linked to selective abortion. In states such as Kerala, where there is less access to ultrascan equipment and a much lower social acceptance of abortion, the ratio is much higher.

In some states, it is even worse. In the three big northern states of Punjab, Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir, it is 874, 861 and 900 respectively. These figures suggest that throughout India as a whole, 3.2 million girls go ‘missing' every single year - as many as 240 million in the course of a single person's lifetime. In the state of Punjab (population 40 million), 250,000 girls alone are ‘missing' every single year. The situation is now so grave that the United Nations has coined a new word for it - Femicide.

It is illegal in India to abort a foetus purely on the basis of sex but this is clearly widely ignored.

It is this issue that concerns Lara Dutta, who is an Economics graduate and who has been a UNPFA Goodwill Ambassador since 2001. With the deep social concern of actors such as Lara and Nandita Das, it's clear to see that Bollywood need not just be about being a pretty face.

With the rise in developments in the western area of the island, it is important to provide the necessary infrastructure. As such, the construction of the new Macondé Bridge has already started and government is to go ahead with the proposed Phoenix - Beaux Songes Link Road in a bid to facilitate those developments.

This statement was made by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Land Transport and Shipping, Dr R. Beebeejaun, during a site visit to the alignment of the proposed Phoenix - Beaux Songes Link Road and to the Macondé Bridge on July 19.

According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the ministry is reviewing the current alignment of the Phoenix - Beaux Songes Link Road, which has been mapped since five to six years ago, as several buildings have been erected in the vicinities of the proposed alignment. But the will is there to start the project as soon as possible, he added.

Regarding the Macondé Bridge, Dr Beebeejaun was satisfied that works were progressing on site with no delay - pile foundation for the bridge had started - and, hopefully, the bridge would be completed by March 2009.

Dr Beebeejaun also highlighted the importance of both major projects like the Port Louis Ring Road and the Harbour Bridge, and small measures, such as parking facilities and establishment of pedestrian roads, to address traffic congestion. The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the need to act fast to improve infrastructure as the picture of road  infrastructure is changing with new developments like the forthcoming Highlands city, where relocation of activities will move traffic away from the city centre.

Topic :   Sex, blood and baby names: U.S. mad for free gas

Some U.S. motorists sick of getting clobbered at the pump seem willing to do just about anything for free fuel, from giving up the right to name their children to stealing from day-care centers to donating blood.

In Orlando, Florida, David Partin pledged to name his son after local radio hosts to win a $100 gas card as part of a contest. Partin will collect the card in December, when his son is born, if he can produce a birth certificate proving the baby is named Dixon Willoughby Partin, after the hosts.

"(His wife said) this is his problem to explain when the child is older," Greg Stevens, WHTQ-FM program director told Reuters.

At the Shady Lady Ranch brothel in Beatty, Nevada, clients who spend $300 or more this month will receive $50 gas vouchers as part of a promotion to beat the summer slump in business.

"It's rocking along. We're doing quite well. June and July historically are not big months," said James Davis, who co-owns the ranch with his wife, Bobbi.

The first $1,000 in gas cards were given out within a week, he added.

In Mesquite, Texas, thieves drained $100 worth of gasoline from buses used by the Higher Ground Church day-care center and have hit four or five other church center fleets in the area.

"It was someone who was desperate," said James Green, the church's pastor. "All he had to do was come and ask us and we would have bought him a tank of gas."

The American Red Cross, meanwhile, is running a summer raffle where blood donors are eligible to win a year's supply of fuel.

At St. Ann's Parish in West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, the Rev. Edward McDonagh has decided to institute a drawing for a $50 gasoline card at weekly mass.

The drawings are symbolic gestures and not intended to boost attendance, he said.

"When Jesus was at the wedding feast of Cana, the groom ran out of wine, he produced the wine for them," he said. "In that spirit, we feel that this might be comparable."

Super-fit Koena Mitra has been toning her body for her latest superhero boy-bashing action flick Karna. The Bengali-born actress is scathing about the Bollywood trend towards size zero, claiming that thin is not fit. "In Bollywood, they think if a leading lady can do one free-falling kick she's achieved the unthinkable," she says, "In Karna, I've to do the kind of action which only male actors have been seen doing in the movies."

She's also been asked to cultivate a British accent for the movie. "I've to get a British accent, and fast. Yes they've asked me to speak in my own voice and in British accent because the movie will be in sync sound. I've to learn four different types of British dialects."

The film will be shot mainly in Hong Kong and China.

Koena, who made a good appearance in the disappointing Cash last year, admits to having an unusual perfume fetish. "Actresses usually have shoe fetishes or then are crazy about accessories - bags, cosmetics, belts... Though I enjoy all that, what I enjoy most is fragrances and have thousands of perfumes at home. In fact, the thing that turns me on in men is their smell and the fragrance they use. Personally, I'm not a fan of the peaches and creams or the strawberries and raspberries. Women's perfumes aren't for me. I prefer wearing male perfumes 'pour homme'."

Parlant de sa conversion à l'Islam, il explique qu'il avait déjà une petite notion de cette religion.

Deepika Padukone unveiled the first look of her forthoming venture Chandni Chowk To China at a suburban multiplex. The film seems promising and will feature Deepika in different avtaars all through the film.

Not only fans thronged to just have a look at the actress but also there was pandemonium when the photographers went to click pictures of her. Security guards behaved very unruly and created ruckus.

A frightened Deepika took shelter in the theatre halls and refused to come out after watching all these. The makers had to finally cajole the actress and bring her to face the shutterbugs once again.

Chandni Chowk to China is a R S Entertainment and Warner Bros film. It is being produced by Rohan Sippy and directed by Nikhil Advani.

The film stars Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Mithun Chakraborty, Ranvir Shorey and Masumeh Makhija. But looking at the Deepika craze among the audience, the makers must have been thinking about depending on Deepika only for striking the hit string.
