The responsibility of women giving birth to children was at the focus of the speech of the Minister of Women's Rights, Child Development, Family Welfare and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Indira Seebun, this morning(July 17) at Bambous Women Centre. In her speech at the opening of a workshop on Healthy Sexual Reproductive Life, which was organised in the context of the celebration of World Population Day 2008, Mrs. Seebun stressed the importance of family planning. She underlined the need to ensure that the family has the means to give proper attention to a new born child. Reproductive health is important and to that effect, Mrs Seebun told the participants that women will be empowered through training so as to help them control births and therefore plan their respective lives as well as the lives of their families. The workshop aims at sensitising officers and active members of various women associations/clubs and members of participatory advisory committees on the need to provide information and subsequently to raise the awareness of women at grass-root level on issues pertaining to family planning. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Vidya Charan of the Mauritius Family Planning and Welfare Association.
