A historic event for Mauritius, a success for the Mauritian diplomacy and a leap ahead for the Mauritian economy, the Prime Minister, Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, said on Feb 19 during a press conference to elaborate on the recent visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao. Dr. Navin Ramgoolam commented on the three agreements amounting to Rs 8.9 billion that were signed between the two countries. These pertain to the extension of SSR international Airport, the decongestion of the traffic in and out of Port Louis and other ongoing projects such as the wastewater project of Plaine Wilhems. The Prime Minister pointed out that along with the financial aid offered by China, what matters also is the transfer and exchange of know how, technology and expertise between the two countries. He also dwelt on the importance of China for Mauritius. As well as being the third economic power of the world, China is also the highest investor and one of the highest contributors of Foreign Direct Investment in Mauritius. Dr. Ramgoolam emphasized the strong ties that bind the two countries, referring to the diplomatic stand of Mauritius right from independence, built on the one China policy and consolidated by the visit in 1972 of late Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam in China. ‘China does not forget its friends’ the Prime Minister was told during a State visit to China in 1997. The ties between China and Mauritius are built on solid grounds and the visit of President Hu Jintao will only help to consolidate these ties, Dr. Ramgoolam reaffirmed. The Prime Minister also seized this opportunity to thank the population of Mauritius for their support and cooperation to make this historical visit a success on all fronts.
