The Prime Minister, Dr Navin Ramgoolam, G.C.S.K, stated at the National Assembly yesterday that he was not against the idea of live telecasts of parliamentary proceedings. Replying to a Parliamentary Question Dr Ramgoolam pointed out that once modalities are finalised, the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) would be in a position to provide extensive coverage of parliamentary debates. At present, parliamentary proceedings are included as news items in the MBC news bulletins, he said. The Prime Minister recalled that the MBC provides extensive coverage of parliamentary debates including Private Notice Questions. He added that the length of time that the MBC allocates for the broadcast of such debates depends on the newsworthiness of the subject. The MBC is allocating substantial time for the broadcast of the debates of the National Assembly in the news bulletins while ensuring that the contents of the news bulletins are fair and balanced, added the Prime Minister.
