With the rise in developments in the western area of the island, it is important to provide the necessary infrastructure. As such, the construction of the new Macondé Bridge has already started and government is to go ahead with the proposed Phoenix - Beaux Songes Link Road in a bid to facilitate those developments. This statement was made by the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Land Transport and Shipping, Dr R. Beebeejaun, during a site visit to the alignment of the proposed Phoenix - Beaux Songes Link Road and to the Macondé Bridge on July 19. According to the Deputy Prime Minister, the ministry is reviewing the current alignment of the Phoenix - Beaux Songes Link Road, which has been mapped since five to six years ago, as several buildings have been erected in the vicinities of the proposed alignment. But the will is there to start the project as soon as possible, he added. Regarding the Macondé Bridge, Dr Beebeejaun was satisfied that works were progressing on site with no delay - pile foundation for the bridge had started - and, hopefully, the bridge would be completed by March 2009. Dr Beebeejaun also highlighted the importance of both major projects like the Port Louis Ring Road and the Harbour Bridge, and small measures, such as parking facilities and establishment of pedestrian roads, to address traffic congestion. The Deputy Prime Minister stressed the need to act fast to improve infrastructure as the picture of road infrastructure is changing with new developments like the forthcoming Highlands city, where relocation of activities will move traffic away from the city centre.
