In 2007 the total primary energy requirement of Mauritius reached 1,379 ktoe (thousand tonnes of oil equivalent). Imported fuels (petroleum products and coal) accounted for 88.2% (1,113 ktoe) while locally available sources that are renewable, supplied the remaining 17.8% ( 246 ktoe). According to figures from the Economic Indicators, in 2007 petroleum products which amounted to 778 ktoe comprised mainly fuel oil (32.2%);diesel (26.6%), aviation fuel (18.6%) and gasolene ( 13.7%). During 2007 coal increased by 18.3% and reached 355 ktoe. This increase of coal in the primary energy requirements was partly due to the coming into operation in April 2007 of the Compagnie Thermique de Savannah Limitée , an Independent Power Producer which has a co-generation plant of coal and bagasse. As reported by the Economic Indicators, some 2,465 GWh (212 ktoe) of electricity was generated in 2007 as compared to 2,350 GWh ( 203 ktoe) in 2006. The Independent Power Producers supplied 59.3% of the total electricity generated and the Central Electricity Board, only 40.7%. Thermal energy represented 96.6% and hydro/wind the remaining 3.4%. The consumption of electricity per capita per annum stood at 1,567 kWh in 2007 compared with 1,501 kWh in 2006. With regard to water, the mean amount of rainfall recorded in Mauritius in 2007 was 1,954 millimetres. February was the wettest month, registering a mean rainfall of 572 mm whereas November was the driest month with a mean rainfall of only 45 mm. In 2007 potable water treated by the different treatment plants totalled to 206 million cubic metres, a 10% increase compared with 187 Mm3 in 2006. During the same year, the average water production from surface and ground water represented 48.9% and 51.1% respectively.
