A working session on leadership in schools between officials of the Ministry of Education and Human Resources and Professor Brian Caldwell of the University of Melbourne in Australia was on May 13 at IVTB House, Phoenix.

Prof. Caldwell is in Mauritius in the context of the national conference on Leadership in Schools, which will be organized by the Ministry of Education and Human Resources, on 21 May 2008 at the Mahatma Gandhi Institute, Moka.

In his opening remarks, Prof. Caldwell pointed out that countries are facing the challenge of how to connect education with economy and society. It has become a priority for schools to produce people who have knowledge and skills to contribute to society, he said. Prof Caldwell added that he was impressed by the comprehensive range of initiatives undertaken by the Ministry to transform the educational institutions in Mauritius into world class schools.

During his stay Prof. Caldwell will conduct a series of workshops with rectors and deputy rectors of secondary schools on the work of school leaders. He will also focus on how outstanding schools have succeeded by building intellectual, social, spiritual and financial capital. In the course of the workshop, participants will reflect on indicators of success in each of the above mentioned areas. The indicators are: knowledge and skills of the teacher, how schools link with the community, values and beliefs in schools, how money is spent and the processes of decision making.

Key findings from the workshops will be summarized and presented to the 450 heads of schools who will be participating in the national conference on Leadership in Schools.

During this morning's working session, the Chief Technical Officer to the Ministry, Mr. H. B. Dansinghani, expressed the hope that these workshops filter down to activities and management of the schools and act as capacity building sessions for the participants.
