The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Land Transport and Shipping, Dr Rashid Beebeejaun, has appealed to the professional and technical staff of his ministry to build effective teams that work together with the common objective of improving the infrastructure for and well being of the population.

Speaking at the opening of a training programme for Professional and Technical Staff of the Ministry at the Mauritius Maritime Training Academy in Pointe aux Sables on May 8, Dr. Beebeejaun underlined the need for the officers to shoulder their responsibility as well as to strive together to have a better functioning and performing institution.

The Deputy Prime Minister dwelt on the challenges of working in a changing environment and called for the officers to learn to adapt very rapidly, to be part of change and accept it as an opportunity to move forward. He also asked the professional and technical staff to encourage young graduates to join the service. Fairness, respect and independence are key ingredients that will improve the image of the public sector in the eyes of the young generation, he said.

Dr. Beebeejaun also expressed his satisfaction regarding the introduction of program based budgeting in ministries and departments which he said is an important step towards the improvement of quality of service and customer's satisfaction. He added that good intentions are not enough and that training and financial means are the key to achieve one's objectives.

The training programme has been designed by the ministry in collaboration with the University of Technology of Mauritius. It aims at imparting the required tools and skills to enable the professional and technical staff namely engineers, architects, surveyors, to improve their performance, meet customers' expectations and deal with major challenges.
