In line with the Modern Mauritius concept, the utilities are also being upgraded so as to provide uninterrupted and efficient services to citizens. Water- The Government is extending to the whole island the pilot project to reduce lost water from the present level of 48% to 25% by 2015, as it is giving encouraging results. At present, the project involves six zones and around 40 000 customers.
- A sum of Rs 350 million has been earmarked for increasing the treatment capacity of La Nicolière Water treatment plant from 66,000m3 to 100,000m3 of water daily. This, owing to growing demand for water in the North due to the expanding tourism sector and the need to transfer potable water to part of Port Louis during the dry season and requirements at the Tianli Complex in Riche Terre.
- The construction of the Bagatelle Dam which will supply the Port Louis regions during the dry season whilst also adding to water supply for the lower Plaines Wilhems.
Waste water50% of the population will have been connected to the public sewerage system by the year 2011. - Rs 6.6 billion has been provided for the extension of the Plaines Wilhems Sewerage Project network to connect some additional 32 000 households.
• In order to provide sanitation facilities to the poorer segment of the society, the CHA-Phase IV, concerning 27 low cost housing estates will be implemented over the period 2009-2011.
