No country can assert that it is safe from acts of terrorism said the Attorney General and Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Mr. Rama Valayden, this morning at the opening ceremony of the second sub-regional workshop on Criminal matters related to Terrorism, held at the Labourdonnais Waterfront Hotel in Port Louis. This workshop is a follow up of the first one which was held from the 13 to 15 December 2005, in Nairobi, Kenya where the five Member States of the Indian Ocean Commission gathered to strengthen cooperation between their States in the Judiciary, so as to prevent and fight terrorism. The main objective of the three-day workshop is to implement the strategy upon which all Member States have pledged to fully cooperate against terrorism and to prosecute, by means of extradition or prosecution against whomsoever who commits an act of terrorism. The strengthening of coordination and cooperation against the infractions most likely linked with terrorism will be also taken up. The workshop is conducted by experts of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime and national representatives. It is to be recalled that in September 2006 all Member States of the Indian Ocean had adopted a strategy to fight terrorism in all its forms.
