The Budget 2009 makes provision for a sum of Rs 15 million for upgrading and modernizing George V and the Anjalay Coopen Stadiums and bringing them to international standards.

In the wake of the 2010 Football World Cup in South Africa, there are possibilities for participating teams to come for training sessions in Mauritius. Therefore, this sum has been allocated to attract these teams to Mauritius.  The visit of these international teams is expected to greatly benefit Mauritian football teams and players.

Helping Women in Business

With a view to ensuring the sustainability of small businesses put up mostly by women, the National Empowerment Foundation (NEF) will introduce a mentoring service to be delivered by capable Non-Governmental Organisations and private consultants on a cost-sharing, performance-based arrangement.  These mentors will assist the small enterprises to set up and develop their marketing capabilities and competencies in managing their businesses.

In the 2009 Budget,  provision is made for the Saving Jobs and Recovery Fund to provide for a new micro-enterprise financing scheme for women which will be  operated by the NEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Women’s Rights, Child Development and Family Welfare and the MPCB.  These micro-enterprises will be financed up to Rs 40 000 per beneficiary and Rs 400 000 for women regrouped in a Société.

Supporting Vulnerable Women, Children and Families

Government will extend its assistance to women, children and families who are in distress.  Allowances paid to single mothers who are recipients of social aid having dependent children have increased from Rs 700 to Rs 1 000.

Chrysalide Centre will receive Rs 600 000, the Shelter for Women and Children in distress Rs 750 000, SOS Villages Rs 4.2 million, Crèche Coeur Immaculé de Marie Rs 1 million and CEDEM Rs 1.1 million to enable them to pursue their activities.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Women’s Rights, Child Development and Family Welfare will be working with the Ministry of Social Security, National Solidarity and Senior Citizens Welfare and Reform Institutions and NGOs to elaborate a comprehensive programme to offer shelter and support to women and children who need assistance.
