As at end of June 2008, 342,344 vehicles were registered at the National Transport Authority. This represents an increase of 8,199 (2.5%) as compared to 334,145 vehicles registered at the end of December 2007.

Figures released by the Central Statistics Office show that during the period January to June 2008, the fleet was strengthened with the registration of 10,587 vehicles, of which 7,185 were new, 2,940 were imported second hand and the other 462 were re- registered. During the same period, 2,388 were put out of circulation.

At the end of June 2008, the fleet consisted of 149,781 cars and dual purpose vehicles and 145,107 motorised two-wheelers. The remaining comprised 25,097 vans, 12,618 lorries and trucks, 2,764 buses and 6,977 other vehicles.

During the first six months of 2008, a total of 10,410 road accidents were reported against 10,214 for the corresponding period of 2007, showing an increase of 1.9%. Fatal accidents increased by 17.2% (from 64 to 75), slight injury accident by 5.0% (from 819 to 860) whilst serious injury accident was down by 6.9% (from 202 to 188).

A total of 20,360 vehicles (motor and non-motor) were involved in road traffic accidents during the first half of 2008 as compared to 19,931 for the same period of 2007, i.e. an increase of 2.2%.The number of casualties registered from January to June 2008 was 1,551 against 1,530 for the same period of the preceding year, showing an increase of 1.4%. Among the casualties around 32% were riders of motor/auto cycles, 27% were passengers and 21% were pedestrians.

The number of persons who died as a result of road accidents was 76 in the first semester of 2008 compared to 71 for the corresponding period of 2007, showing an increase of 7.0%. The number of slightly injured persons rose by 4.2% from 1,202 to 1,253 whilst that of seriously injured fell by 13.6% from 257 to 222.
