"Our ultimate aim is to find solutions to industrial relations problems through speedy conciliation and settlement of disputes and putting in place processes for agreements on labour issues to be reached to the satisfaction of all parties concerned", said the Minister of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment, Dr. Vasant Bunwaree.

The Minister was speaking this morning at the opening ceremony of a three-day training programme on Conciliation and Mediation Skills, at the seat of the Ministry in Port Louis.

According to Dr. Bunwaree, these changes will require a different mindset, a change in the attitude and the way people work.  The challenges call for a new toolset and therefore there is need for training and development to be competency based, he added.

"Our officers at all levels should increasingly take a proactive role in their own professional development, assuming responsibility for continuous learning to improve their performance behaviourally and technically, while at the same time accepting to be conditioned with a new mindset and with a new attitude towards work", said the Minister.

The training programme, organised by the Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment in collaboration with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University of South Africa, regroups officers involved in conciliation and mediation activities.

Topics that will be covered include, amongst others, Conflict Dynamic, Consensus Building Skills, Joint Problem Solving, Modern Negotiating Theory, Conciliation and Mediation in Mauritius.  Resource persons for the training programme are Prof. J. A. Van Der Walt, Dr. A. Govindjee and Prof. G. Van Der Walt, who are respectively Head, Deputy Head and Associate of the Labour and Social Security Law Unit of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
