The box office pattern for Jodha Akbar is now decisive. The Hrithik Roshan - Aishwarya Rai 50 crore epic tale which had underperformed in its opening week in most every state of India, is nearing also-ran status heading into its 3rd week despite being given a rare competition-free run over the month.

While the producers are claiming a 14 crore net 2nd week, that's believed to be optimistic. Nonetheless, its print saturation and collection capacity was actually closer to 40 crores for week 2 and 50 crores for week 1. Meaning week 2 percentage of occupancy for Jodha Akbar was just around 30%. It needs to be recalled that the agreement with multiplexes where most of its revenue is coming from stipulated that for week 1, UTV was to receive a 50% distributor share of the net, and for week 2 only a 41% share. So UTV's 2nd week share may not be much more than 6 crores, after an already below expectation 14 crore theatrical share from week 1. That means UTV has only recovered 20 crores theatrically in India on this 50 crore film so far. Since week 3 multiplex terms specify that the UTV distibutor share will be even lower in the range of 35% of net collections, the final share for Jodha Akbar will be lucky to cross 25-26 crores from the entire of India at the end of the theatrical run. By conventional standards of distribution ratings, the film therefore is a commercial flop, though a section of trade keeps trying to imply otherwise pointing to video rights and airplane rights and so on. However films are not rated at box office by recovery from video and airplane rights, as in that capacity, even many of bollywood typical flops recover their investments.

Theatrically, Jodha Akbar will not yield a 30 crore share from India for what is a 50 crore film.

Moving onto the week's details, in Bombay city, though the 2nd weekend at one point was good enough to hint a recovering 4.5 cr net there in week 2 and possible long term steady run, the collections since then have been downright dismal. The weekday occupancy figures were going as low as 8% after a 75% 2nd weekend. Even for weekend there had been rumors of ticket tearing at some of the theaters.

Elsewhere across UP, Gujrat, Haryana, Bihar, Jharkhand despite its massive print release and open run for almost a month, the film had buckled down even earlier with no hope for pickup. The only exception is south which is not a major hindi audience circuit.

In MP, though the ban was lifted midweek, the bookings on their own remain tepid moving forward. It continues to entail heavy losses throughout Rajasthan and other centers where screenings were taken off.

Finally, despite no competing releases, the advance for weekend 3 for Jodhaa Akbar in Bombay also is in the range of 15-20%.

This is not encouraging for the film billed to be most expensive and awaited film of the decade.
