The concept Maurice Ile Durable (MID) will be in focus during a series of activities from 14 to 20 March 2009 organized by the MID Fund in collaboration with the Ministry of Renewable Energy and Public Utilities and other stakeholders. The objective is to disseminate information about the MID concept, which is a long-term commitment of the government to improve the nation’s energy portfolio and security to endorse sustainable development and to address climate change threats to the public. The MID Fund which was set up in June 2008 focuses on the protection of the environment through recycling of waste and the preservation of local natural resources to achieve sustainable development and adapting to climate change; harnessing of all local sources of renewable energy to reduce dependency on imported fossil fuels and energy management programmes, amongst others. The Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre jointly with La Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie in Paris is holding a national exhibition entitled “North Pole, South Pole: Scientists on the alert”. It will focus on recent scientific progress made in extreme environments as regards global warning, atmospheric monitoring, biodiversity, mineral resources and oceanography. A computer generated movie, ‘Climax’, which explores the different possible scenarios forecast for 2100 as a result of climate change, will be shown. During the MID Week, the Ministry of Renewable Energy and Public Utilities and the MID Fund will launch a national campaign on energy efficiency whereas the Central Water Authority will organize a Save Water campaign. On the other hand, Mr. Richard Reynolds, author of the bestseller “Guerrilla Gardening: A Handbook for Gardening without Boundaries” and passionate environmentalist, will be in Mauritius and will participate in an interactive forum on 16 March with students, youth, NGOs and women organizations. The aim is to encourage participants to develop green projects which will be selected for a prize to be awarded by the British Council. In the same context, the University of Mauritius will organize a seminar on MID from the 16 to 18 March 2009. On its part, the British Council will hold a workshop on climate change and corporate social responsibility for private sector operators of the tourism and industrial sectors. A one-day consultative seminar on ‘Grid Code and Feed-in Tariff for Small Independent Power Producers’ has also been scheduled for 19 March at Domaine Les Pailles. On 19 March, Professor Joel de Rosnay will conduct a video conferencing session during which the MID website will be launched. The series of activities will culminate on the 20 March with the organization of a workshop by the Board of Investment on ‘Energy Efficient and Green Buildings’ for policy makers, developers, builders, architects and engineers. The resource person will be Professor Dr Steffen Lehmann, UNESCO Chair in Sustainable Urban Development for Asia and Pacific.
