Government has acquired the premises of the British American Tobacco (BAT) at Nicolay Road in Port Louis, which will house a regional vocational training centre catering for the region of Port Louis and the north. The deed of sale of property was handed symbolically yesterday to the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Public Infrastructure, Land Transport and Shipping, Dr R Beebeejaun, by the General Manager of BAT, East Africa Zone, Mr N. Maistre. The acquisition of the premises tots up to Rs 160 m. At the handing-over ceremony, Dr Beebeejaun stressed the need to train and educate our youngsters in face of the different challenges posed by globalisation, climate change and high food and fuel prices, adding that human resources development is the key to the country's advancement.
The Deputy Prime Minister also highlighted the advantages of the BAT site in particular its easy access from Port Louis and the North and its ready-to-use infrastructure. He thanked all those who have endeavoured to find an appropriate site for a training centre in the vicinity of Port Louis. The Minister of Education and Human Resources, Mr D. Gokhool, who was also present at the ceremony, welcomed the acquisition of the new site which he said would house a knowledge and training centre established according to the latest educational concept. The new regional vocational training centre would operate under the aegis of the Industrial and Vocational Training Board (IVTB) which already has a dozen centres across the island. Courses offered cover automotive engineering, building and utility maintenance, electronics and telecommunications, food and beverages services, hospitality and tourism management, industrial engineering, IT and multimedia, printing and graphic design, textile production and wood technology.
